Yeah - great for Intel chipsets, however Driver Booster will look at Intel software, and the Intel autoupdate won't work on Windows 8.1 last time I looked.

One thing I noticed today, you need to go to Windows task scheduler and get rid of the tasks once  installed...
Go to Task scheduler and delete anything to do with Driver boost. Updating the original thread now.

Same thing for the Intel utility, it leaves a task behind.  And it failed miserably on my Dell laptop, perhaps because Dell does something to its drivers ?

From memory the software actually gets installed on add/remove programs. Can't remember what they call it.

Alex, I'm glad that it works for you.  However, I tried it and came up with 28 drivers that needed updating.  I went to the manufacturer's sites and discovered that my drivers were up to date.  This also happened with Driver Detective which only reported 24 drivers out of date.  Therefor, I'm highly skeptical of a program that is misleading, since, ultimately, they only want you to buy their "pro" version of the free software.  Buyer beware!

I guess I must be imaging it works  Everybody thinks this software is the bogey man...

This is very vague.... Seems like a little bit too much of a coincidence that two entirely different products detects the same things. Something is going on at your end..

Now this software actually tells you what driver versions it will update it to. Right click on the device it detects as needing updating, click details, and it will give you the details about the latest version it wants to upgrade to. You can then find out if this is a work of fiction or not.

You can tell what the current version is in Windows device manager.

So what exactly did it detect wrong?
The specific device name , the current version, and the version it wants to update to .... Can you give just two examples of what it is "lying" about ? :)

I not saying what you are saying is wrong, it's just the coverage your have given is rather blanket :)

Thanks... :P

To name two:  My NVidia GeForce GTS 250 is running version 331.82 which is the version that Driver Boost wants to install.  My Focusrite VRM box is running version 1.1.128.0 which DB tells me I need.  My main point is that some free software do this to encourage one to buy the "pro" version, especially software that claims to remove malware.  They offer a free scan, which detects hundreds of things, and then make you buy the software to get rid of them.  Many of these are bogus, and actually infect your system.

If this software works for you then I'm happy for you.

Well that's weird, I have no idea... You aren't using virtualization or hyper-V or anything?
You followed my exact steps in the original thread?

Yes, following your steps exactly, I successfully downloaded and ran the software.  I'm not using any exotic settings on the graphic card, nor do I game with it.  It's the same set up that ADK installed when I bought the computer except for the newer drivers, which came with a Windows update, btw.  And to be perfectly honest, my computer runs like new, anyway, but I just wanted to give this a shot to see if it was legit.  Do you have any faith in the "update drivers" function in device manager?  I've wondered about that function before.

Windows update for devices often is way out of date, and sometimes wrong. It continuously shows NVidia cards for instance as needing update even when the drivers installed are later. If you install them you revert.

That's not that I wouldn't discourage windows update, far from it. Absolutely the best thing for Microsoft products. But all these things work of databases often updated by humans, therefore prone to user error or infrequent updating...

The best place to get the latest drivers is from the hardware manufacturers site. If you have an nvidea graphics card go to their site, a Hewlett Packard printer, go to their site. Intel PC? Go to their site. And so on.....

I find Driver Booster works better than windows update for drivers though myself. Reason why I encourage it is because some people don't realise that other drivers need updating, i.e. often chipset firewire drivers get ignored...

Cheers...

I totally agree.  BTW, I really like the Steve Dior band.  Why not put something up on the Songs forum?  What part do you play in this group?

Thanks for asking Lynn...

I knew Steve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Dior), through as friend of mine was his guitarist I went to their gigs and I really digged his songs, Steve is probably the best song writer I know.

I bumped into Dave Allen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_M._Allen), the last time we worked together was at RAK studios (Mickie Mosts outfit) 20 years ago. I persuaded him to produce his album, and I basically backed it $$$ and did all the leg work. We worked as a team. The band just rocks, Elliot Mortimer from Jim Jones Revue on keyboards, James Simmins on bass who is currently working with Youth (Killing Joke). We also had JC Caroll from The Members ("Sound of the Suburbs"), Michael Giri (Stephen Duffy's drummer) doing percussion, Will Spurling is the drummer who's band is now being producer by Rat Scabies (The Damned). I did a bit of synths myself and some BV's - everybody does BV's  . All done in a proper studio not somebodies bedroom.)

The album is done but currently having difficulty getting out for reasons I cannot go into (it is gut wrenching but we are still trying). Anyway we have just three tracks out exclusively on youtube and that's it. This is just the tip of the album (there are no fillers).  but giving birth to this project has been exhausting.

Plug over!
