Right, so this really is the killer line for my feature request. Thankyou.
I would also be interested to know of other DAWs that do this just fine as well.

Akex you need to freeze the synth not the track.

I blame it on Jon ;)

Anyway as this doesn't seem to be going any further I've logged it as a feature request, I guess I could start another thread when it comes to workarounds if necessary.

Thankyou very much everybody for your help, especially the people who I spelllt the name of wrong.
Now filing in a feature request....

FEATURE REQUEST FILED:

SONAR cannot record plug-in effect or synth output

At present Sonar X3 cannot record plug-in effects or synth output, and this is a BIG deal for people who own synths or controllers with multiple outs. The most that can happen is a bounce which is far too time consuming in a lot of scenarios...

For use case and better understanding of the requirement please check:
http://forum.cakewalk.com/Waveform-Preview-m2949348.aspx

Please can we have more flexibility with outputs in Sonar ! :)

Quotes that may persuade you:

Scook: "SONAR cannot record plug-in effect or synth output without a plug-in recorder in the FX bin to save the output to a wave file outside of SONAR or use a loopback through the audio interface." "The subject comes up every now and then, Cakewalk has never provided the capability. "

Sanderxpander: "Ableton does this just fine and I've used it effectively in the past."

CakeAlexS "I have given up on religion now I realise I cannot do this. I have come to the conclusion that there is no God and I will be spending more time with the womens 5 a side hockey team than with my Native Instruments devices".

Scook: "Don't call me Sharke"

If that doesn't persuade you nothing will...
I make light of this but it is a serious request.

Thanks

Alex

Waveform preview on synth tracks and buses is essentially a fancy historical representation of a meter. It was an idea I cooked up way back in 2003 as an extension of confidence recording. It captures the historical metering data and plots it horizontally on the track so it looks like a waveform, when in reality its the peak output from the meter :)
As such its just a UI representation of the past meter output and cannot be copied.

From the X2 manual :

"A synth [audio, midi, buss] track can display a waveform preview of its output. When you enable this display function by clicking the XXX button on the track strip, the amplitude of a synth track's audio signal is graphed in real time as a waveform."

I don't see the [waveform] button anywhere, neither in X2 nor in the pictures in the manual.
Has it been removed ?

Turning waveform preview on and off in Preferences doesn't change this.

There is in X3 at least, please check my original post #1, it's the red button that looks like it has a waveform on it (on the track with the waveform)

It is a feature in X2. The preview button. located just to the right of the solo button, is only on Audio tracks which receive input from a plug-in and Busses.
