Sure I will go through these points. And maybe I should wait for the next updates and place the 2 dlls again in the VSt folder (overwriting) and give it a try afterwards.
After all, with my initial post I had hoped for some reply telling me in which of Sonars instruments I could find the sound I am looking for.
Thanks to you all for your patience.

Craig Andertons solution helped. Thankx again - also for being patient with me.
Converted the instrument "vintage drum" from my .sf2-file to .sfz with sfZed (find it here: http://www.keyboardmag.com/miscellaneous/1265/create-your-own-virtual-instruments-with-sfz-files/31010 and here: http://audio.clockbeat.com/sfZed.html, inserted that file to my sforzando player, and could play it from there. I'll have to turn the other instruments a bit lower, so the drum gets through, but that's no problem.
I am in contact with the guys who created the VStInstruments which wouldn't play any sound, lets see what comes out from there. In case they can offer a solution as well, I shall report here.
Good night.

Glad things are looking up. sforzando is great. Be sure to check out the ARIA Engine Free Sounds, too.

Did you not catch my post about using WAVE files in Session drummer? I sampled my own drum kit as well as a few weird sounds we have needed over the years and session drummer will play a standard wave file.
I just record them into a wave editor and edit the front end tight. Crank them up to max db and dump them into Session drummers folder.
If you were real crafty you could lift the sounds from the original recording..

I think I seriously bring my Tascam handy recorder to work tomorrow and record the 2 old organ drum machines..

I will have to check all your suggestions to be sure I am not doing things fundamentally wrong.
The fact that I could apply one solution does not mean I skip all the others. In the current case, however, I could create "my own vintage drum" by combining 2 sample banks int one sfz-instrument, which was good for the project I was talking about.
The others questions still open will have to be solved, because they might hinder me in the future again, although Sonar is such a fine DAW. I do not wish to "spoil my application" by constantly repeating errors.

Ok, I went through the tutorial which suggests that the usual procedure was to start with the "normal" template: 1 audio, 1 MIDI track, by interting the VSt imnstruments you get more instrument tracks.
On the other hand, I usually proceed as described in the other link, "Why don't I hear MIDI-playback", where I route the MIDI events from the MIDI track to the soft synth.
The thing is, I started with the (nowadays almost prehistoric) Cakewalk 3.0, advanced from there to Cakewalk 8.3, and remained there for a long time, being reluctant to use heavy software. That was due to the limitations of my first PC. Then I got a real fine machine, but clinged to that Cakewalk version very long before daring to try Sonar 4.0. It seems that I have "spoiled myself" with too simple solutions, and now that the real fine software is at hand, I easily get confused. Apparently I start understanding I could do things far more efficient, and I shall try out to continue that way, but it might happen that I suddenly turn up here with seemingly silly dummy questions that you even would not expect from a total newbie.
But maybe one of you could give a try to this thing:

I constantly get error messages that some modules could not be loaded. In case you do not get those messages, it's me again messing up things, but I'd feel very convenient in case you encouter them, too.

I tested on my system and could not find a problem. I can PM you step-by-step instructions if you like.

Here are 2 quick and dirty loops I recording using the DSK Mini Drumz 2 plug-in. Both use MIDI groove files that ship with Sonar. These are just "dry loops" with no effects. Please, no one judge my production values.

It may be helpful if you start from a blank slate. If you start a project with File > New > Blank Project, it will keep the interface options to a minimum.
