old song remixed

Today I got ARC and installed it.  I decided to run it on some older stuff so I could "play around" with it a bit.

I worked on this song and then discovered that I was using ARC incorrectly.

So this version of this song is BEFORE ARC....although it is a completely new version with regards to the tracks, instrumentation and such things.....

Be sure to listen on good speakers, studio monitors, or cans.

I'll worry  work with ARC later.

You're not exporting with ARC turned on are you Herb?

In case you did not know, that is not what you do. You use it to listen (in your not so perfect room) to hear your monitors in "compensated EQ mode". When you export you should turn off ARC as it applies the compensated EQ (for your room only) to the mix.

Yes I do notice a difference....slight...but there is one there....

1st Let me say this is really beautiful........man...it truly is.....

now for me a couple of things I would of done different.....

The dreamy guitars have too much verb....I think that is why they kind of sometimes run together and I think you would want a little less verb so that you could keep  them seperated because you want to hear each guitar harmony line....cause it really is wonderful
Kind of reminded me of Ramblin man........that is the best guitar duel ever!

Next your acoustic piano is mixed too hot.... as is the tele like guitar lines later on in the work.....

But you are so on track with this......it is a beautiful composition....

    Just my 2 cents

    Herb,
This sounds superb man.  What beautiful tones.  I agree the pianos are a little hot.  other than that it's freaking great!  Two thumbs up.

Edit: btw I think this version sounds more balanced, better mixed, and more polishe than the other one you have on the soundclick account so what ever you did your on the right track.

I struggle with ARC myself.  It does improve my mixes but cuts out a lot of the bass in my studio which to me seems to make it less enjoyable to listen to and work on.   It's like vegetables for me..  I know it's good for me but I don't like it.

Chuck, that was the biggest thing I noticed right up front. A serious reduction in the bass response I was getting. AND.... when I switch it on, the stereo field seemed to really become much closer to mono.

I ran the set up 3 times so far. 2 times with the sub turned off because as I started through the set up, first, I had the monitors turned way, way down.... and when the sub was on, the mic was feeding back and ringing on the low freqs and there was no way to get all my small listening area covered w/o getting that feedback.

I have to work today so I will set up again tomorrow if I have time. I need to place the mic on a stand as the instructions say rather then setting in my chair and simply holding it in the sweet spot circle.

On the song... I have some minor tweeks to make to some levels. This song has come a great distance. The original version ...that center string section was the worst part to me as it was originally rendered with horns.... so I tried electric guitar, acoustic guitar and finally some strings. I switched the string synth 3 times.

    Glad you like it.

Herb, sounds really good.  I am not listening on a good set of speaks, only the small desk tops that I have at work; however, I can still hear a major difference.  This version is really tight and well mixed.  Love the piano and string tones.  Nice work bro!

robby - ARC is IK Multimedia's Acoustic Room Correction plugin.  it's designed to EQ out the standing waves and reflections in your room for you to mix to a flat response.  but you are supposed to remove it before you export as bapu says above, which it sounds like Herb didn't realize he was supposed to do.

you don't want to export with ARC still on, you only want to mix with it so that you are mixing to flat response.

Now I see ...said the blind man.... after reading the instructions and set up manual fully.

The version of this song this is up should be the un-ARC version.

(mixed before ARC.... but new version of this song)

    Hey Herb,

I'm totally confused on which version this is, whether it was completely done before you got ARC, or if it was remixed with ARC, and then exported "without ARC".  Either way, this is really a beautiful, haunting instrumental, and the mix sounds fantastic here!

A little different than your usual style, but it sounds excellent and shows off your great songwriting and arranging skills.

Really nice job, Herb, have a great weekend!

Really nice job Herb. Very open. i think the piano sits nicely.
and, I don't know which version I'm listening to.
I'd like to have both available to compare (arc, non-arc).

I think this is a really great bit of tunage!

I think the lead at the end had a bit too much reverb. I would leave it till you start arcing correctly. Don't let it become your arc enemy! lol!

    I know, bad joke. ;-)

Well done! Can't wait to hear the finished mix.

Dream-like guitar too verb.I think this is why they sometimes run together, I think the verb you want less, so you can keep them separate, because you want to hear the harmony guitar line every business . it is really wonderful..it is a beautiful composition.

did you happen to post this tune about 2 years ago when I was more active here ?

    Richard: spam in the signature?

Kenny: yeah this was posted some time in the past.... the center part that now has strings had horns and steel ...totally out of the character of the rest of the song.  Someone also had commented that the twin guitars reminded them of the  Scorpions.

With ARC it's a matter of getting used to it.

About that camera angle video.... you look like a friend of mine with whom I used to play in a band. He was a bass player. You also have a bit of a Willie N look about you as well.

I liked it the way it is/was. I clicked the first link. I think the guitars are fine - it's an emotional piece, and every part is meant to take you to the Upper Room. And...it did.

Thanks Gary.  I wanted to keep the bass low.... it was almost a decision to keep the bass out totally in a few places.

    Herb,

Really fine song.  The guitars sound really nice.  Has a little of that Gary Moore sound quality when he did some recordings with Thin Lizzy ( the harmonies you chose).  Everything sounds good, the piano and fiddle are exceptional as well.  Really like it.
