quick review of new PRV (17.03)`
I'm very delighted to see work on this area of sonar. Since my paid year expires next month, it's a diabolical plan to make me pay more, no doubt. What's there now: 1) the sharps/flats change in color is dumb, sorry. don't do that. I have read posts how to fix it, but that is a pointless thing to change, and it ruins previously well-planned color schemes. 2) only one controller is excellent. Alas, TWO controllers does not seem possible. I inevitably use THREE controller lanes, in the old way, and curse while deleting 17 of them to get just the three wanted. Then I lock them in place, and so a project once fixed is now usable. Now I must change from one to many, and again curse to get down to the three that I want to see. 3) the track view, and the absence of 'pick tracks', is unworkable. Select 3 tracks to view together in one PRV window (among many) --- you get the whole list of tracks -- 80 or so -- in each PRV. That's not really an improvement. The one-line-of-text per entry is good, though. 4) there remains no way to identify the minimized PRVs ... using 8-10 of them requires, old style, a rigorous control of in what order they are created, so as to avoid the endless fiddling trying to find the right window from all the minimized ones. A simple tool tip: what tracks are in view in this minimized window? would be a great addition.

New synth rack view has been removed from Browser -- ok, that's one way. Now, though, that unworkable default "enable midi output" has reared its ugly head again, and appears to have been set even for a project where it was carefully UNSET.

It does seem the new PRV is a substantial improvement, but evidently is not ready for prime time. It may take a few more months to get the various issues corrected. I hope Cakewalk isn't assuming this is done and they can put it away for several years again.

It would be helpful to see an explanation of how to use the PRV. I can use everything in Sonar, but the PRV hasn't been my go to section. I was hoping the improvements would be a calling card to start using the PRV more, but I wasn't getting any aha moments when viewing it in the new update.
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

While the questions on this topic are not being convincingly answered, the little I'm getting from the new PRV is making me want to go back to the previous version of Sonar.

Mr. Copper, it's a nice review . . . though I don't really understand what you're saying in item #3 ? 3) the track view, and the absence of 'pick tracks', is unworkable. Select 3 tracks to view together in one PRV window (among many) --- you get the whole list of tracks -- 80 or so -- in each PRV. That's not really an improvement. The one-line-of-text per entry is good, though. . . . as far as I can see, you can still select multiple tracks by turning off Auto Lock, and Ctrl - Left mouse clicking the tracks you want to view together at once. Anyways, in my opinion, this PRV re-working is a huge improvement for my own workflow, I like it a lot.

I'm a gonna respectfully disagree here. Maybe its the way I work, but I could not ask for a better improvement to the PRV. I think someone should do a video on how to take advantage of the new features. Perhaps I'm using only the very simple midi editing techniques to get what I want, but I love the list on the side and changing colors and the single lane. Everything is soooo much quicker and so easier to see. The thing I would like is to change the piano scroll on the side to staff lines. That would just MAKE MY DAY!

Staff lines in the PRV view ? Ha ! At first I had to laugh when I read this (with all the lack of staff view interest at Cakewalk, thinking this would never happen) . . . but it's actually a brilliant idea, for those who are inclined in the ways of the staff, it would help bridge the gap, a path to peace. I agree a video would be great, but Cakewalk videos have fallen by the side of the road, just like the E-zine. The E-zine would have explained this new PRV feature in depth, rather than the bullet point new feature mail out summation I received.

While I believe everything can be improved, I happen to really like the PRV changes. I cant tell you how many times I had to click that stupid drop down list to "Pick tracks" to be seen in the track pane. Now I can choose a bundle to see / or all tracks. I do 30% of my work in the PRV. the rest is Audio (stringed instruments, Vocals, exc. and im loving these new improvements. The sharp / flat lines, those don't effect me at all. If anything I like the relationship between seeing white as whole notes, dark as sharps, flats. That only seems natural to me in the relationship of music theory.

A few FYIs...a video was done on the new comping features in previous updates, and a PRV video is in progress. So videos are ramping back up. Also the expanded eZine will launch in May, so you won't have much longer to wait.
