cyphersuit X1d keeps crashing on me, that's the first reason to look elsewhere. My system should run fine, too. (i7 26k, 16 GB Ram, two SSDs, two 2 TB harddrives, Win7, MOTU interface) do you have a smaller hd for your os and projects? i find those large hard drives to not work as well as a smaller one and a large combo, for instance i used a 1 tb for x1 for a while, but found that the sectors are so spread out that its hard to keep up in certain places, copy and pasting took for ever and a day. now i have a 300 had for all my projects and a 1 tb for saving documents, exc. the smaller is a 64 cache 72 rpm. i have an i7 and only 8 gigs of ram and using the 300hd i run really well and close to never have a crash or a play stop due to making adjustments on the fly. sometimes its little tweaks that will do it for you, ive seen the posts where it says "25 things to make your daw run at its best" not trie my friend, you see,no one,and i mean no one knows your system better than you. you use it,you study it,you problem solve with it. so try some tweaking that you know might help,id start with the hard drive. may i ask,do you have it partitioned? by the way, hope this all gets better for you man.

I don't think not having gapless is a deal breaker for most people, but it certainly is like the difference between having power steering in your vehicle or not having power steering. You can drive the car with either, but one is more work than the other.

No one was ever accused of "over steering" without power steering.

vksf01 try inserting a plugin (especially a virtual instrument) while the project is playing and it'll gap, guaranteed Bristol_Jonesey My system is pretty much gapless. I can do virtually everything on the fly with no glitching you bring up a good point there though vks,im not sure anyone could insert session drummer 3 or some other heavily taxing stynths while the play was rolling and not have it choke out...b.j. if you can, then im very surprised if not shocked.(can you?) but i think another point would be fair to add...do you really need to have the play in motion while inserting a soft synth? how long does it take to stop the playback and insert something? not long.i cant say that my working habits are curved because of it,now vsts...yes i can see that because we are consistantly changing them looking for a sound color.

That's a big ole YMMV, of course.

Man.... how the heck did we ever keep a 'vibe' and get things recorded when we had to wait for the tape to rewind. If a momentary pause prevents you from getting that 'perfect' take it probably wasn't any good in the first place.

I don't even know if its a vibe thing. I think it's like just having a more straight-forward and uninterrupted workflow. I don't dig it when X1 locks up just because I want to delete an unused track during audio play. But how much patience does it take for me to simply just do it when the audio stops instead? Not much. So, I think its preference more than sheer necessity. Some people prefer automatic shifting to manual, some prefer power steering over non power. Some like sugar in their coffee. Are they traitors, malcontents or space aliens coming to subvert our planet? No, probably not. They just have preferences.

I'm sure you're right, lance. For some people, they just don't want to break their concentration. I know some people are the same way when you try to talk to them while they're watching television- they don't want interruptions. Perhaps gapless is more of a necessity than a preference for those kind of people.

just tried the s1 demo. gapless audio engine - rocks. no crashes for a full session (2 hours). i can insert synths while the playback is rolling (X1 usually hickups and messes up the timing when i do that). also all pops and crackle sounds have gone i had with dimension d and T Racks 670. so going to buy this. then i have two options, which is nice. got to admit that i like the favorite folders for fx and synths more from Sonar X1. also i prefer the X1 GUI. also i gotta say that i did not need to customize s1 to run smoothly, with every sonar installation it takes me a day to change all settings to run as smooth as possible.

Bristol_Jonesey My system is pretty much gapless. I can do virtually everything on the fly with no glitching I doubt there is such a thing as a "gapless" Sonar system today. Sure, if you don't use your system as some of us do, then it may appear to be gapless, but I bet if you do some of the things I do, Jonesy, you'll get gaps. A super fast, well tuned system will mask much of that, but it won't be truly gapless. That's my opinion, of course, but based on what we know about the Sonar Audio Engine and what has been said over time by the bakers as well.

For most people here, gapless is having all of your teeth in your mouth. As for gapless audio, its a debate that has no right or wrong answer. Freedom of speech and the power of consumer spending will drive the market. 31.6 percent of Americans never hook up to the Internet. Similarly, some people will still live in homes without electricity, and pump water from a hand pump. We don't need gapless audio anymore than we need cable television or microwave ovens.

cyphersuit Well but having a gapless audio engine generates trust with the user. Having gapless audio does not hurt the people that don't want or need it, and it enhances the experience of the users that do, demonstrating a progressive technological outlook for any company that implements it, just as auto manufacturers offer cruise control or automatic transmission to enhance the driving experience of their customers. Not all product features are simply implemented because of bare necessity, but often because they enhance the experience of the consumer and add real and psychological value to their products, and thereby create an image of corporate leadership and innovation by staying on the leading edge rather than simply following behind it.
