"Apply" Track Template Against Existing Track?

Hi All,

I often use track templates and project templates, but I was wondering this. Is there a way to "apply" a track template against an existing track? The use would be when I'm importing a bunch of tracks. They come in to new tracks, but as I figure out what they are, it would be neat to say, "Ok, this is a piano, so I'd like it to take on all the characteristics of my piano template #4" or something like that. I know I can create a new track from the template and then drag the clip - was hoping for something with less steps.

No, that's not possible. You have to do the copying/pasting procedure that you mentioned.

To me it is the only way that  feature "track templates " will ever  truly be a useful feature is when they become applicable.

With them as a template that can be place on a track you get so many abilities that I can't understand why CW has not made this possible.

Effects chains would be possible as just one thing they would make easy and simple thing to do.

Instead we got instrument tracks. A true waste of their time.

Needless to say I have asked for this ever since they first appeared.

That would be very nice ideed. I have recently came across the same problem.  I never had this problem before as I always used project templates. (use to record live shows stright into Sonar)
I would always create templates the night before a live show.  Worked out great back at the studio when mixing, alot of the work was already done.  Just bring up the project and start mixing.

Now that I'm using a Alesis HD 24 for my live recordings.  I have to import all the tracks into Sonar. Thus, creating the same problem as you have described.

That feature would definitely save alot of time !

Ken I found this thread while looking to see if you ever posted regarding Cubase. You mentioned you were going to give it a try and report back. How's it going with that. I for one was waiting to read your report as I trust your opinion and I am a fence sitter myself. I have a copy of LE but it's to basic to judge Cubase on.
But here you go with the subject of this thread and that's one feature I really would like to see. If Cubase can do that it would be a BIG nudge in that direction.
I just spent hours with my old MIDI tracks I recorded on an Atari and each one takes 20 or more steps before it will even play correctly. I have to keep repeating the exact same steps for each song. I have over 150 tunes so this is getting tiresome.
Any how if you'd like start a new thread to tell us your thoughts on Cubase I'm listening. ( might have to post in CH. )

    johnnyV,

This is a little off the main topic here, but if you are doing 20 steps of repeated activity for each of 150 files you may want to look at a macro program called AutoHotKey.

I use it for stuff like that.

Yes  I'm aware of macros, I have a footswitch that will perform 3 macro functions. I use it to control my laptop for live performance. It comes with a full blown Macro thingy, Don't worry I'll never make it though half of those songs anyway, Most can be downloaded now with better parts. Mine are just Bass and drums odd bits of keyboards.

    Heck no!

I love Simple Instrument tracks.  I couldn't achieve my workflow if it wasn't for them (actually I could, but it just wouldn't be as neat).

On the subject, we definitely need this function along with FX chains in Sonar.  It was suggested about a year ago by a group of us, and many others forumites before and afterwards.  Hope Cakewalk is listening, cause this is one mayor workflow improvement.

Yup, this is a shortcoming of how track templates are currently implemented. And yeah, fx chains also please now please.

    Fx chains? Yes please!!

    Assignable track templates? Yes please!

I'd get twice as much work done in the same time.

Yes, assignable track templates would be great. But how's this for a workaround?

You have your track that you want to apply a template to.  Insert a new track from your template then select everything in the original track and nudge it down to the new track with the 'numberpad 2' key. Then delete the empty original track.

Not quite as fast as applying a template directly, but still pretty quick.

And FX-chains would be great too.

    Hey Tarsier,

He already knows how to do it the way you describe (as he mentioned in the OP), but he wants to apply the template to an existing track rather than using the work-around you suggest.  This is the problem with Sonar.  You CAN do things, but they almost always require work-arounds.  I wish Sonar would get to the point where we can just do stuff with minimal mouse clicking and zero work-arounds.  That would be ideal of course :-)

Being a Logic user as well as Sonar, i feel channel strip and fxchains
are an absolute must for Sonar. PLEASE cakewalk, I beg you!
    Not to mention automation lanes!

I really do hope Cakewalk get this sorted out, Sonar's feeling a bit
    behind in comparision with Logic8/9.
