"Rock Tonight" Party Rock Anthem - UPDATED Mix 11/22
Hi, Guys and Gals, It's been a few months since I've posted something, so here goes! It's a straight forward rocker named "Rock Tonight". This is a first mix of this song and I'm looking forward to any helpful suggestions, constructive criticism and mix advice. Rock Tonight - 128k MP3 on SoundClick at: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8320124 or, Rock Tonight - 192k MP3 First Song on MP3 Player at www.BobOister.com As always, thanks in advance for any opinions or suggestions, I truly appreciate the input of the people in this forum! Bob UPDATED MIX - 11/22/09 - As per suggestions in the thread, I rolled off some highs on the rhythm guitar bus, gave the bass guitar about another half Db of volume, and beefed up the kick and snare with a little EQ. I also pushed up the verse vocals a little bit and very slightly backed off the vocal effects in the chorus. If you get a chance, let me know what you think. Thanks again everybody, for your input and suggestions! I greatly appreciate it! Bob

Bob!!! Good to see ya back man. Another rocking Oister Tune!!!! Loving that distinct vox you've got, fits the style of music perfect. The bass is so rock solid on this one, man it rocks, thumpin away down there. My ears get that high end sizzle from the rythym track. Not a level problem or even a problem per se. Just my own personal preference would be to knock back the high freqs of that track ever so slightly. I guess if I had to describe it more, there is the low bass thumping and then I hear more of the high end on the guitar than the mid. That could be my ears too so don't put too much stock in that crit. But great party tune and I am sure you'll end up a with a great tune, you always do. How's the CD comin? I just subscribed to your newsletter to make sure I get the news on it. Have a good one!

CreatingNoise: Hi, Tony, thanks so much for the listen and the very kind words! I really appreciate your comments and feedback. Yep, I was starting to have a touch of "ear fatigue" after quite a while of mixing for this first pass. I know exactly what you mean about the slight "sizzle" on the rhythm guitar tracks. I think the contrast of the deep 5-string bass makes the guitar track high end stick out a little more than I wanted. I believe you're right about a touch of EQ surgery taming the fizz. I'm hoping to get the CD finished by early December. I was originally shooting for this past Spring, but then after a ton of books and DVDs, I started going back and re-mixing everything I've recorded in the past year and a half, to try to tweak, squeeze and polish things up, and fix minor things that bothered me. It seems like the mixing part never ends! Thanks again for checking this out and for your input. Have a great night! Bob

Hi Bob! I'm a fan! Great song! The low guitar riff brought back memories of my rockin' days when one of my bands used to play Motley Crue's "Kick Start My Heart". I did have the ear fatigue thing going on though from the highs on the guitar track. I checked out sme of your othere tunes on your website also. Some good stuff on there. "Coming Home" starts out real nice, but may have some issues to be addressed, mainly timing. Overall, you're a man after my own heart......Rock, rock til you drop!

Scottytunes: Hey, Scott, thanks for your comments and also for checking out some of the other songs on my website! I'm hoping to get a chance to pull some EQ on the high end of the rhythm guitar tracks on "Rock Tonight" on Sunday or Monday. As I mentioned in a response above, I'm still remixing and ironing out some bugs and issues on a few of the songs, and "Comin' Home" is particularly driving me crazy trying to pinpoint the slight timing fluctuation. Some people I've played the song for notice the timing issue, but can't seem to put a finger on the exact problem, and then others say the timing is fine. I think it's during the lead guitar intro before the first verse, but I'm having a tough time figuring out exactly what to "nudge" in which direction. When you get a chance, if you have a few minutes to listen to "Comin' Home" again, I'd truly appreciate any suggestions you might have to help pinpoint the timing issue. I was actually planning to post a remix of it here in the next few weeks, to try to get some opinions. Oh, and man, you are so right about "Kickstart My Heart", it's definitely one of my top three Crue favorites! Thanks again for listening and commenting, and have a great night, best wishes! Bob

Excellent work! Great song! Overall superb production, performances and mix :-) Only slight criticism IMHO there is a little too much reverb on the vocals, although the echo fx is nice when used between vocal phrases.

Bob, I just listened to Comin' Home again. It's the chop guitar that comes in at 1:04. It is slightly behind the beat. I think it might be coming in a hair late....either that, or it is played at a slower tempo than the rest. Anyway, I think if you fix that track it will be okay.

Bob Bob, thanks, actually my friend who's a pro says that's my best too :-) I lost it in a HD crash :-( But it's OK because it was my first Sonar project? And I need to re-do it? Because I've learned "so much since then" about how to do this $h!+? I'm no pro, by a long shot? But I can create a half decent mix now compared to back then? So I think I need to re-do that one, it's one of my favorits... It was written from the heart? About my last wife, after she left... :-( And I was crying in my beer... Those can be some of the best though? And that one is a good one. In fact, when I finish the current Blues tune? (Born under a bad sign "baby") :-) I think I'll re-record I love you goodbye! Thanks for the idea and the inspiration, and again, this tune? I think is one of your classics... Needs to be on your greatest hits album?

Okay, it does nothing to expand the borders of the genre.........having said that, it's a riot. Man, what searing guitars! Sometimes your guitars underemphasize the mids and highs a little, but this seriously compensates. Even the vocals, hot and heavy with some modulation going on, more upfront that usual. Very hot mix, but it's rockin'! A ton of fun, Bob. Mark

Bob -------------------------------------------------- SongCraft: Hi, Greg, thank you for taking time to listen and for your kind words, I truly appreciate your input! Yep, I was kind of shooting for an 80's "Arena Rock" sound on the chorus "gang" vocals so I gave it a touch more reverb than usual. I'll experiment a little bit while I'm re-eqing the next mix. Thanks again and have a great night! ------------------------------------------------------ Scottytunes: Hey, Scott, thank you so much for the PM, and for re-analyzing "Comin' Home" to try to help me touch up the odd timing issue! I'm looking forward to trying your suggestion, and I'll let you know how I make out. Isolating the little problem on "Comin' Home" has been driving me crazy! I've been sliding, nudging, stretching and squeezing tracks all over the place on that song trying to pinpoint it. I really hope your suggestion does the trick! Thanks again and have a good one! Bob
