Hi abacab, Thank you for your excellent suggestions. I spent the day following up on them; I've learned more about Win10 today than I knew when I started, but I still don't know enough...if you know what I mean. Since nothing I did seems to work, I uninstalled Sonar Platinum, and reinstalled with my anti-virus checkers off, but the result, and the message: "SonarPlt.exe has stopped working." continues you appear with this newly downloaded copy. I have also have Sonar X LE, Sonar X3 Producer (x64), and Sonar X3 Studio (x64) on my computer, so maybe those will have to go too, and then I should uninstall/reinstall Sonar Platinum? Could there be a conflict with those other three versions?

Having multiple versions of Sonar installed usually works fine, and is recommended, as they each install to their own directories. Sounds like you have a weird problem for sure. Hopefully someone will come up with a better idea! Hang in there, the answer is usually in the last place that you look :-) I will say though, that if your setup worked fine until a couple of weeks ago, I would really look harder to determine what change happened to your system or software that broke Sonar, and then eliminate it. The situation would be totally different if you were setting it up for the first time. Then there would be plenty more questions about audio drivers and configuration, etc. But your system did work at one time originally ...

"ART X-Connect gives you high-quality 16-bit/ 48kHz recording quality" This mismatch is probably what started the problem. Knowing that, someone here may know what went wrong. It sounds like you have compounded the problem by trying all those other fixes...but maybe not.

Try this: computer off unplug the ArtX Boot computer When fully booted, check the little windows speaker icon in the lower right. Is there an X over it? If there is, go into Device Manager and re enable your Realtek driver. Do not plug in the ArtX at any time...yet. If not, right click the icon and see what driver windows is using. It should be just the Realtek. Open Sonar. If you can get to the start screen, do NOT open any project. X out the start screen (just close it - x in top right corner) Go to Preferences - Drivers settings. What is your bit rate and sample rate set at? What driver, if any, is available in the drop down? Let's start with that. Your goal is to get that far, and set the Bit rate and sample rate to 16 and 48. I don't know if Realtek will let you do that...hopefully it will. Let me know how far you get.

I will add this...16/48 is a very odd combo. I doubt any of your current projects were recorded at those settings. You will have to open all those with your ASIOforALL driver. New projects you can use the new cable/interface...but you will get no sound, or crashes, when you have a mismatch like that, and you are asking for a world of hurt in the long run. It sounds like you want to record guitar with that cable...you can but all your projects must now use that and only those settings - 16/48. You will not be able to use that cable to record guitar into any of your current projects.

Thanks for the help. You're right: the problem began when I tried to use the ART guitar/usb cord (supposed to be plug and play) to record guitar audio into SonarPlt. I probably made the mistake of selecting ASIO4all as the driver when I couldn't get any sound when attempting to record with that setup. After that I unplugged the usb end of the cord and shut down Sonar. I probably should have gone back into Preferences and switched back to the original driver before shutting down, but didn't. It was after that, that I couldn't start Sonar again - ever again, as it turns out... So I can't open Sonar to make any changes - hence this thread and cry for help. Also I've gone to Device Manager and re-check every driver for every device and they are all up to date and working. I don't understand the advice to "re-enable your Realtek driver", I don't know where to look for that in Device Manager. I've searched my computer, without finding any reference to Realtek - so please clarify that instruction. And although it is true that when I start the computer I get a little red-x on the speaker icon in the tray until I turn on the speakers, after which it disappears. [Still waiting for word from the Tech Dept!]

I believe that was a general reference to your on-board audio. I think many modern PC motherboards that have integrated on-board audio make use of Realtek audio processors and drivers. I see that you have a Sound Blaster. Is that an integrated on-board audio solution for your PC, or an add-on card? Anyway, if you look in Device Manager under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers you will see all of the audio devices currently connected to your system. Uninstall ASIO4all if you haven't already. I would then follow-up by unplugging any external audio hardware, USB audio devices, etc. Then go into Device Manager and right click on any audio devices remaining. Select uninstall on them and then reboot. Look see if there is anything showing up now in Device Manager under audio devices after the reboot. If there is anything left it is probably on-board audio that automatically re-installed during the reboot. You can disable it in device manager or reboot to your system BIOS setup and disable the on-board audio there. Reboot. Try this again before starting Sonar: booksmusic Hi Chuck, Thanks for the help. I tried a rename of the AUD.Ini file and deleting it, but I'm still getting the same result. Regards, Reynold
Now try Sonar again. See if you can open preferences. If it works, now try enabling the on-board audio and see if Sonar still launches. At this point just make one change at a time & then test. If you have an issue, back out the change.

The main issue here is that your USB guitar cable is a one way audio device, it is not full duplex. So in ASIO mode you can enable either the Soundblaster card, or the cable, but not both at the same time. It your guitar bable has a WDM driver, and Soundblaster has a WDM driver, and can be set to 16/48 to match the guitar cable's ONLY available setting, then you are in luck. Until that happens you will not be able to hear anything from the guitar. That fact that Sonar will no longer open at all makes me think the Driver settings that are currently residing within Sonar, which are inaccessable to change, are preventing Sonar from fully loading. Now, if you can figure out where those settings reside ie. in the .INI file or some such accessible file openable and editable in Notepad...then you can perhaps salvage this problem...but I don't know how to do that.

USER32.dll is caused by a few things, viruses, registry corruption and a damaged DLL library. A damaged DLL library is more often than not caused by a corrupt registry or virus, so essentially its 2 things. once you rule out virus (Malwarebytes - Run it) as im wondering about where you downloaded ASIO4ALL from ?

Thanks for the continual advice and help. abacab: I tried your suggestions in the order you gave them, but got the same result - no SonarPlt - thanks anyway, I thought we were on the right track. Theodocal: I agree with you that the driver settings or driver-type are the likely culprit - but I don't know how to change them without being able to open SonarPlt. ChuckJones: I spent much of yesterday working with win system file checker to track down and fix user.dll problems with no change. I have Malwarebytes running along with Win Defender and Super Antispyware. Malwarebytes runs every night as does Super Aantispyware. I uninstalled ASIO4all sometime ago, although I still have other ASIO driver onboard. Yesterday I finally uninstalled SonarPlt and reinstalled with all virus software disabled, but keep getting the same message. I opened my copy of Sonar Producer (X64) without a problem, other than the VST scan finding programs for SonarPlt that it could not load. I played the Sonar demo to see if it worked and it did. So that's where things stand. SonarPlt no worky...so much for lifetime updates... I wonder if Reaper might be a better alternative? Anyone use PreSonus Studio? Thanks again for your help - this is an excellent Forum

Wow! Sorry for your troubles, booksmusic, you have been a trooper for your efforts through all the troubleshooting suggestions shared by this group! I had really hoped we were on to something! So this is probably not what you wish to hear at this point, but I'm going say that Platinum is working for many folks. I cannot understand why it is not working on your computer configuration. Based on your system specs, it should run, and with a decent audio interface it should perform very well. It apparently did run originally. Here is a tutorial you may wish to try. It is up to you. Make sure to backup your files before attempting any of this. http://www.tenforums.com/...eset-windows-10-a.html EDIT: The only reason I made the last suggestion is that you have previously indicated that a recent System Restore point is unavailable. That would have been my first choice. It is possible that your files and folders are OK, but maybe a small chance something in your registry needs fixed. Question ... did you try with System Restore "Choose a different restore point, then check the box "show more restore points? Or is the protection setting for your C: drive set to completely off? booksmusic To promidi: I wish MS had told me that I needed to turn on SystemRestore when I upgraded from WIN7 in June, but they didn't, so I'm not able to restore to a time before this event happened; but thanks for the advice anyway.

Here's an update: Mike Lally at Cakewalk Product Support Services sent me an email on Aug. 18th. I responded to his email and sent him a file with the file from the Win Event Viewer when the first Sonar crash occurred (Aug.6th). Still haven't heard back from Mike or anyone else. In four days it will be a month since this happened. Needless to say, I've stopped holding my breath. Reynold

Are you still getting this msg when you launch Platinum? ... a box is displayed for a moment on the lower right of my screen with this info: "ASIO4All.v2-SONAR.PLT 512 Samples 44.1mhz" The reason I'm asking this question is that I have been testing Platinum on my non-DAW laptop with ASIO4ALL as my audio output. It works great and i only see that message box you describe if I hover my mouse over the ASIO4ALL icon on the Windows 10 task bar.

Edit: I have been testing the ASIO4ALL driver on my non-DAW laptop to see if I could use it for audio output from Sonar Platinum x64 2016-07. My laptop is a stock Acer E-15 with Realtek audio, with only the original OEM drivers and no other DAW software or audio interfaces. Running Windows 10 Home x64. Seems to perform OK with Platinum at low latency using VST synths. In an effort to assist the OP, the following describes my attempt to pull ASIO4ALL out from under Sonar Platinum and observe how it behaves normally in this situation. I had no trouble re-starting Sonar and re-configuring the audio options. OK, I just uninstalled ASIO4ALL from Win10 Programs and Features in Control Panel. Then when I launched Platinum normally I got this dialogue from Platinum (a rectangular pop-up with a yellow triangle inside): "There are no audio devices for the current driver model on your system. < reference to ASIO in Sonar settings> Please go to Edit | Preferences | Audio | Playback and Recording and choose a different driver model." So I click OK and at that point Sonar launches and the VST scan starts. I click to open my most recent project ... and get a "Silent Busses Detected" dialogue. In other words "Master" is not routed to anything now. I click OK on that and my project opens normally. Except no sound output now. Now I go to Edit | Preferences | Audio | Playback and Recording and choose a different driver model." so I pick WDM. Then I still need to reassign "Master" to my on-board sound system. Platinum runs, but now sounds like crap [expected] So I have shown you the normal errors that Platinum should throw if you remove ASIO4ALL. For some reason, it looks like something ASIO related is stuck in your system and Sonar is attempting to load it, but it may be corrupted. If I was you, I would remove EVERYTHING related to ASIO on your PC, until Sonar throws a "clean" error just like I described above. And just for good measure, I ran CCleaner's registry scan (no, I don't clean my Win 10 registry with any programs other than regedit) to see if any fragments of ASIO4ALL remained in the registry. All good except for a broken application link to the uninstaller. However the good news is there is now an obsolete software key listed as HKLM\Software\ASIO. Great, I assume this means Windows no longer has any knowledge of ASIO. So now I get the nice clean error from Sonar, that I can fix. Fascinating

WDM/KS sometimes works really well, sometimes not, depending on the interface. Asio4all is even more of a crapshoot. If you're in the states...go on Craigslist and spend the $50 or so on an a focusrite or presonus interface. :D:D

Sorry to say this again but... I have 3 daws and all but Sonar work fine with Windows 10. I always get the same error as the OP. Since I value Sonar much more than Win 10, I went back to Win 7. Problem solved, all 3 daws work perfectly again.

Good suggestion, but not gonna spend $50 for something I don't need. ASIO4ALL works very well on my laptop, 6.9msec latency at 128 samples (softsynth output only, no external audio inputs). I have a Firewire interface on my desktop DAW for the real stuff. WDM/KS and Wasapi also work, but ASIO works best there. My laptop is just something I setup to play with while traveling. All I was doing here was attempting to walk through the OP's situation by uninstalling ASIO4ALL from my laptop and seeing how Platinum behaved. ASIO4ALL is back on my laptop and working great again now, no end of the world, LOL And no, I would not recommend it for DAW use!!! You should read this months Cakewalk eZine. They have discovered that ASIO4ALL is now the #1 audio output used by total number of Sonar sessions launched. The OP seems to have some conflict going on due to several interfaces he had installed. He has no restore point to back out to. The real problem with ASIO4ALL, is that it can cause configuration issues on your PC if you are not careful. It seems to be OK if you install it on a stock system with no other drivers than what the manufacturer put on there (or at least in my case, with Realtek on an Acer Aspire E-15). So I guess the term "crapshoot" does apply. Do you feel lucky???

clintmartin Sorry to say this again but... I have 3 daws and all but Sonar work fine with Windows 10. I always get the same error as the OP. Since I value Sonar much more than Win 10, I went back to Win 7. Problem solved, all 3 daws work perfectly again.
In that case, to back up everything or take an image, and clean install Windows 10 would probably be the easiest fix. Or stay with Win 7, lots of folks have, and I don't blame them. But if you decide to take the leap again, this is the best way. Clean the hard drive and lose all of the baggage. It's a guaranteed productivity killer, took me about a week to get everything I wanted loaded back on, but still worth it. I love the smell of clean Windows in the morning Once your copy of Windows 10 has been previously activated on your PC, you can do this clean re-install without re-activating with a key. I did the clean install from the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and I now have a clean machine that is running both Sonar X3 and Platinum, without a hitch. http://mspoweruser.com/clean-install-windows-10-using-media-creation-tool/ https://www.microsoft.com...are-download/windows10 Disclaimer: I have avoided the Anniversary update so far due to the high number of problem reports I saw.

Well, unless I read wrong, the OP said he had a creative xtreme audio and was using asio4all. IF that's the case as I wrote above, he should use the legacy creative drivers. Glad you're doing ok abacab.

Yep, I agree with you. I just think he needs to eliminate ALL audio drivers from his rig and let Sonar cough up an error about missing drivers. There is still something in there, possibly fragments in the registry, that is preventing Sonar from coming up for a clean audio reset. Then it can be fixed. My example clearly is to just illustrate how Sonar SHOULD behave, when the drivers are removed from the system. Sonar has to recognize the problem correctly, not just exit. Got to get there first, before Creative drivers or any others could be of any use ...

Just curious, if you have renamed or deleted the Sonar Platinum aud.ini file, does it re-create one before it crashes on startup? If it does it would be interesting to look at the file in an editor to see what it contains ...

booksmusic Chuck, I've tried both those suggestions: the control start tried to initiate but I got this message: "Your personalization process didn't complete. You may have canceled the copy...Please redo the personalization if necessary." I don't know what that last live means. try re personalizing sonar again. hold down CTRL while opening Sonar. click yes to the pop up "would you like to re personalize Sonar". this time go through all the steps. click yes, if your prompt with another window, select yea again. im convinced this what you need to do.

I've tried the personalization process several times, always getting this message: "The personalization process did not complete. You may have canceled the copy or your disk maybe full. The application may not launch successfully. Please redo the personalization if necessary." Don't know what's meant by "canceled the copy" but the disk isn't full, and the application does not launch, but gives the original "not working" message, and when trying to personalize immediately again, the same "not working" message comes up immediately. I haven't deleted the other ASIO drivers on my system yet, but I'll try that next, nor am I ready to do a reinstall of Win10 and having to reinstall all my other software ... that's a big leap ... oh, where, oh where is Product/Tech support when you need them... Meanwhile, thanks for the suggestions...

The full personalization process copies with overwrite the contents of "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum" into "%appdata%\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum." My guess is that is the copy referred to in "cancelled the copy."

When I pulled the ASIO drivers (aka: ASIO4ALL) off my laptop after setting Sonar up to use them, Sonar knew they were missing and asked me to fix them by choosing another driver. But they were the last and only ASIO drivers on my system, so Sonar had to realize they were gone. In your case, even though you have removed ASIO4ALL, I believe Sonar still thinks there are ASIO drivers in your PC. But since the other flavors are maybe not exactly configured correctly now, Sonar encounters an error it cannot handle and exits. Cleaning ASIO up is probably your best next step. At least it shouldn't be too difficult.

IDK, it could be a permissions issue or some other disk access problem.
