UAC issue maybe ?

forgot to ask the OP, are you running the latest version command center ?

IDK, it could be a permissions issue or some other disk access problem.

I agree..well also because im almost out of solutions .
maybe run a check disk for errors. there are so many posts now, I am forgetting which solutions I've provided.

Also agree with you abacab, Cleaning ASIO up is probably your best next step
(probably should have been his first step too

Whew!

Okay. Removing two other ASIO drivers on my drive has allowed me to open Sonar, just as we thought it might. I was able to configure Sonar to play using the Windows MME drivers, haven't tried to record yet. Since ASIO is apparently recommended for best results (?) should I download a new ASIO driver? Any suggestions there?

And by the way, thanks to everyone for your help over the course of this thread - you folks are great!

+1

Glad you got it sorted out!

Now go get a real audio interface that comes with ASIO drivers.  Check the used listings on eBay if you need something cheap.

Just to add my latest thoughts on the use of ASIO drivers with Sonar, based on the OP's experience, plus my testing of ASIO4ALL on a laptop:

Cakewalk has reported that ASIO4ALL is the #1 audio output used by the number of Sonar sessions launched.  Would the number of problem reports actually decrease if folks stopped using this?

If all you want to do is playback sound from a Sonar virtual instrument, the ASIO4ALL driver is probably safe to use, and does provide a low latency audio solution that could be a much better user experience than the stock audio drivers that Windows provides.

BUT, if you plan to plug anything into your PC to record audio via the mic or line in, you should get a pro audio interface and use the supplied ASIO driver for the interface.  Make sure you uninstall any ASIO4ALL drivers before you install any new audio interface on your PC and setup the Sonar settings to a default driver temporarily.

The ASIO4ALL uninstaller does seem to do a clean removal of whatever it installs.  Don't leave this clutter on your HDD if you are not using it

Morning all,

Yep had the same problem this morning trying to load a session. Uninstalled and reinstalled without luck. I remember the last time I was trying to load a session without my external audio interface connected (was on the train) and I changed the playback and recording setting to Asio. After uninstalling Asio4All from programs and features on Win 10, Sonar now fires up again without error.
