"Speak to Me" - trippy rock original
"Speak to Me" - trippy rock original http://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/bb09-speak-to-me from the new album. "The Time Is Magic" recorded and mixed in sonar lots of feedback electric guitar, some real spacey alternative music loops done in Nuendo, lots of harmonies, double tracked lead vox, slippery bass lines, and a head-trip lead guitar solo, inspired by jeff beck (no picks!) heheh hope you enjoy it.

I thought I was listening to "Revolver" for a minute. This is truly one of the best submissions I've heard, yet. There's nothing to fault with this, it's a classic. I'll be getting your album in the near future to show my friends what can be done in Sonar. Outstanding.

Batsbrew, Very freakin cool man. I love it. At times the drums seem a bit set back but I understand.... you have a lot going on in there. Over all great mix, cool vocals, nice performance all around and I love the slide "fretless" sound on the bassline. Nice work here!

Nice job. All sounds great and super job on the vocals too. Snare could use definition - a dry up front Ringo type snare might really be cool. This probably cranks on a large speaker system. Rimshot

LYNN thanks man. i love revolver. appreciate the kind words. i'll tell you, sonar is just dirt easy to work in. all you have to do, is show up with the right attitude. LOL of course, sometimes that attitude needs some...........coaxing. heheh chuckC glad you dig this one... it's a bit different than the others. the drums are a bit understated, only because of the depth of all the tracks. they needed to be, and it's a good contrast to some of the more bombastic drum tracks on the previous songs on the album. thanks for listening

scotty evh.... eh, i so try to avoid evh. not because i don't dig it, but just because of it being so overdone...... hehe, so i had to go back and listen to what i played, to figure out where you where coming from.. yeah, i can see what you mean, the 'falling down the stairs and landing on your feet' lick, must be some kind of influence. but i had been watching beck (jeff) play on the ronnie scotts, and he's playing with no pick... so i set the amps up hot, put a hard compressor on the output of the mic preamp, and just used the edge of my fingernails to get all the chirpy attack..... i guess, when you're not holding the pick, it kinda frees the fingers up to do.......whatever, and i grabbed a quick little two-handed tapping thing.... i didn't even realize i had done that, til you mentioned it!! LOL again... good ears, scotty.

gcarlson thanks man. i'm glad this mix is translating, it was really really hard, to get the backing tracks to sit properly. i had to take a 3 year old MP3 file, of the backing tracks, and tweak the ever loving you know what out of it, to get it to be where i wanted it. and it still sounds lo-fi to me. i just rolled with it. guitartrek thanks man, appreciate it! no, this is not superior, the drums were done in nuendo originally, and were probably BFD benMMusTech thanks for checking this one out. you know, this song was originally (in demo form) just a two guitar riff, built around a kind of steady boring jungle-kind of drum motif... but the spacey vocal approach was there from the beginning. this one was kind of written around the vocal first, usually i approach from the music first, then add melody, then lyric. i wrote the lyric before i ever had the music.

rimshot hey, thanks i guess you're a drummer, from your name and icon.... yes, i originally had a real loud rock kit on my first and second demo of this.... but as this strange rhythm track version started to grow, it was so dense, that the drums were kind of relegated to rhythm duty more than 'power' duty. i wished i had access to the original backing track files, but alas, all i had to work with, was a previous Mp3 of an early mix. my guy dissappeared! seriously, i can't find him. so i worked with what he gave me... i used multiband compression, some fancy eq, stereo widener, maxxbass, all kinds of stuff, to tweak particular frequencies, and one i concentrated on, was the snare attack. i could only bring it up so far, before i had some nasty masking effects start to show up, with the cymbals, and the grinding melodium and the indian drum effects.....

WHACK thanks man, keep that neck a groovin' heheh rogerH you can still make it!! LOL just crank up the ole harmonium, and run it thru your marshall stacks! guitarpima thanks man. glad you dig it, and thanks for listening and commenting. the beck reference, was only for the end solo... you're right, it's probably more aligned with primus than beck, in terms of song format... that reminds me, i've got to get out my primus brown album!! drummerglyn thanks man! yea, drummers always preference the drums, and i do too, usually.... but in this case, it was such a dense mix, they had to sit back a bit. that's ok, on this one, they're just really providing the groove, not so much attitude.... on the other tunes on the album, the drums are more in your face, as the song requires..... clean thanks mark, for the kind words, i appreciate it!

Wow, Rob, I missed this one. This is a great tune! All the Batsbrew attributes and some new sounds. The vocals are so great!!! It is trippy! Love it! Hey, whatever happened to the Shaman Song? Is it still kickin'? The guitar solo in this is so off the charts, buddy. Looks like I'll need to buy my second "Batsbrew" CD. I have the first one committed to memory from walkin the mountain with it. :-)

evadianepug you missed this one?! man, you gotta get the album! LOL cheapest way, is download from amazon.... shaman song, no, it didn't fit on this one... and since i wrote that one for my father (deceased), my mother also has passed. it just didn't feel right to put it on this one...... but i've got a new version of it anyway, new mix, maybe i should post the new version here, and get some feedback on it before i wrap it? speak to me solo: this solo, on this song, was inspired by jeff beck. i had been watching my dvd of Beck at ronnie scotts, and you know, he plays without a pick. has for years. when i go to do a solo, i've usually played over the top of the section a dozen times, just to play around with it. but when i actually do the recording, i hit the red button, and go. it's always an 'all or nothing' kind of thing, my solos..... i like them completely off the cuff, and either they work, or they don't. if they dont', i blow them away, and start over. so, i set my amp up real hot, where it's just singing... and i tossed the pick, and just used the sides of my nails, to hit the strings with glancing blows, you can hear the fingernail attack very clearly in some good headphones or earbuds.... it's an interesting way to play, for me, after years of either fingerstyle or picks, but never just for solos... so i'm going to investigate that style further. thanks for listening, and commenting, i'm glad you dig this one.

I really enjoyed this one! Bass groove and shuffling drums work fantastic together!! I'm getting a Janes Addiction vibe from some of the vocal work, but the guitar is anything but Janes- which I totally dig. Some really really nice licks throughout, then some shameless noodling as things wind down. Somehow you glued it all together! NICE JOB!
