session Drummer 2
howdy folks. I originally put this over in the Instruments forum but no replies :( so i'm trying here. I recently reinstalled my laptop from scratch (blue screening) and therefore naturally had to reinstall Sonar X2 studio. I notice when i opened any projects, i got an error saying session drummer2 not found. I couldn't find the install files for this so i bought a copy and downloaded it this evening. The install runs ok and the paths given look standard i.e. c:\program files\cakewalk\vst etc. And in the VST folder i can see the session drummer folder plus the DLL file. And yet Sonar is not seeing it when i do a VST scan. It sees all the other vst including SD1 but cant get it to pick up SD2. I've made the path is added to the scan folders section in sonar. I've even uninstalled Sonar again, reinstalled and reinstalled SD2. Same problem. This was working up until i reimaged the laptop. I didnt see any particular instructions with the SD2 download or setup so I'm guessing this should work fine with sonar x2. This might be a job Cakewalk support but if anyone has come across this I'd sure appreciate any tips. Thanks.

Are you using the 32 bit version of Sonar? Session drummer 2 was 32 bit only I think. Use Session drummer 3 for 64 bit Sonar. It should have been included with Studio, It came with my copy of X3 Studio.

its 32 bit i got johnny. It doesnt appear to be included though. I reinstalled X2 about 3 times now and no SD getting installed. That's why i paid for it this evening and downloaded it. i think i'll have to give Cakewalk support a call on this one tomorrow.

Well the problem might be that your installing the 32 bit version of Sonar which will probably not install Session drummer 3 or any of the 64 bit plug ins at all. I would highly recommend you look into at least Windows 7 64 bit, Unless your computer cannot run it. No point paying for new software that is made for the 64 bit world and trying to make it work on XP 32 bit. To many problems arise.

Does SD2 have different drums that are not available in SD3? If so, it is a resource I have been overlooking.

Hi Conrad. I dont know actually. I'm only using SD2 because i am still on X2. I cant afford to upgrade to dont think you can put SD3 on Sonar X2 as far as i know.

Agentclam, I am confused. I have X1 and I have both SD2 and SD3. I have Producer version of X1, so maybe that is the difference. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck and am sorry I don't have the solution.

His problem is ( I think) he is on a 32 bit OS and version of Sonar. Session drummer 3 ( 64 bit) has been included with all the X versions of Sonar according to the Calkwalks specs. I see no mention of Session drummer 2 in that info but it is hard to find now the knowledge base search is funky. My guess is Sonar 32 bit only will install 32 bit plug ins and skip all 64 bit plugs. I don't think Session drummer 2 has been included since 8.5 which is where my version came from.

In every case where Cakewalk ships a 64bit plug-in, there is also a 32bit version.

OK that's good to know, I just haven't installed a 32 bit version for 4 years or more now. So why is he not using Session drummer 3? It should have installed.

Scook, you're brilliant. The MS redistribution update worked. X2 is now picking up the SD2 dll file. Thank you so much. Guys just to clear the confusion. I am running X2 32 bit. This does not come with any session drummer preloaded. You have to buy it separately. Now, someone asked why i was not running SD3. To be honest, i didnt see a download for SD3 so perhaps you cant buy it as an add on. Maybe SD3 only comes with higher end DAW such as producer versions or X3. But, thanks to Scooks mail there, i got the dll recognised. Phew. thanks for the feedback guys and all the help. Sure do appreciate y'all

SD3 was a Producer exclusive until X3. Now it comes with all versions of X3. Glad it was just a lib issue.

Ya I just spent 20 minutes trying to find the old spec sheets but I just realized the one I was looking at was actually producer for X1 and 2. Even though my search was for Studio. The search does not even turn up any info about session drummer 2 at all?? I was trying to find the info about 32 bit 64 bit versions. Oh well. So we are back to just a basic scanned plug in issue. But I'm still wondering about the stability of 32 bit installs of X 2.
