e.Blue I'm glad someone else is noticing this. I have also encountered a situation where certain plugins (Machfive 3) will essentially cause SONAR's meters and GUI elements to completely stop refreshing. I suspect that it is the Nvidia video card. I never saw this issue when I used to use AMD (ATI) video cards. I reported it a while back to both Cakewalk and MOTU, but nothing was ever done. I've just learned to minimize those plugins to get the GUI back to being usable. -e.B
Read post #54 ( I have the same problem with ATI or Nvidia.

In the case of specific plug-ins I wonder if the plug-ins are hogging the UI thread or windows message queue preventing SONAR updates from happening in a timely manner. If this is the case, there is not much Cakewalk can do about it.

Yes it doesn't seem to be the same issue that was reported to Sonar (see my steps). I would put this on a new thread.

Not sure if this has been mentioned in the thread, but having Aim Assist (X) on and moving the cursor during playback back gives me the "jerky lag" 100% of the time.... shut it aim assist off and everything is "fine." Edit: when using the auto-looping during comping (shift-enter) it was very noticeable.

Hi all, I have the same problem with the jumping / stuttering nowtime playhead and made some additional observations: The problem only occurs when I move the mouse over a MIDI clip in TV and only when the Smart tool or Edit tool is selected. The stuttering increases by extending the height of the track. Open task manager shows a huge spike in CPU load from 2 - 3 % to 50 - 60 % when moving / circling rapidly over a MIDI clip. What's interesting: If I lock the data of the MIDI clip, either from context menu or clip inspector, the CPU usage drops down and the nowtime playhead moves normally without any lags. Locking clip's position alone (without data) doesn't fix it. So in summary, these are the steps to reproduce the issue on my system: 1. Create new project 2. Insert a MIDI track 3. Extend track's height or double-click on track's pane to maximise the track 4. Minimize Inspector and Browser view (edited)5. Insert or create a MIDI clip (one single note does it) 6. Select Smart tool or Edit tool 7. Open Windows Task Manager to see the CPU load 8. Switch back to SONAR and move the cursor rapidly over the MIDI clip Result: CPU load climbs from almost nothing up to 60 %. (To see this it's not necessary to start playback, the CPU usage is high even when playback is stopped) During playback, if track height is very low or minimised, the laggy playhead is not really evident, so you have to enlarge the MIDI track vertically! Note: I did these tests not on my DAW-PC (i7 2600) but on another computer with an older dual core AMD CPU, so CPU load, which causes the playhead lag I think, might be lower on faster machines. Best, Klaus

Klaus, what happens if you follow your steps with aim assist off? I can confirm just turning on aim assist reproduces the behaviour(#55,#64), I think there are multiple ways to repro this issue. Thanks..

CakeAlexS Klaus, what happens if you follow your steps with aim assist off?
Hi Alex, aim assist is actually off. I updated eventually my DAW Computer to X3d (specs below) and can now reproduce the same behavior on this machine, too. The only difference is that on my older computer the CPU load is getting high even if only one MIDI track is in the project, while on my DAW (4 cores + HT) CPU load is quite low at the beginning but increases when I insert more (empty) tracks. So, after adding 5 or 6 tracks, MIDI or audio, and one MIDI track contains one MIDI clip as described in #65, the CPU load on one core spikes to almost 100 % and the now time (playhead) jumps / stutters. The tracks must not be minimized, otherwise the effect is barely noticeable (see #65). Best, Klaus

I filled out a problem report on this issue too. I even included a video of this problem happening AND a link to a project file that could reproduce it for me. This was the canned response: "The status of your problem report has updated to "Contact Tech Support" with the following notes:The problem you are experiencing is most likely a system specific problem or a configuration issue that we believe can be resolved with assistance from Cakewalk Technical Support. Unfortunately, as explained in the Problem Report Form, this form does not put you in direct contact with our support staff."

I'm experiencing the same issue on X3d: full lag when moving around the mouse cursor, but playback continues fine. - ATI Radeon 920 gfx. - Intel Q9550 core 2 quad. Observations while working in a new project (only 2 audio tracks, no midi tracks or soft synths, no plugins, aim assist off): - Happens only when hoovering the mouse in the clip pane of the track view. - One of the cpu cores spikes to 100% when moving around. - More than 10 take lanes opened. When closing the take lanes, the problem is gone! - Lag is most heavy when 'smart' or 'edit' tool is selected. With 'select', 'move' or 'erase' tool the lag is obvious less, and with the 'draw' tool no lag at all. (thus differences between the various tools observed)

Hi guys... thought i resurrect this tread... ok. i just got on X3E... will update my signatures in a little while... again this was stumbled upon; this time by hitting on the "A" shortcut key - this brings up the Audio Snap Palette. The curious ON/OFF button is in question... - i decided to toggle this button ON for all my audio tracks; doing them one at a time - playback perfect.
- all tempo changes are played correctly and screen refresh and playhead silky smooth.
- using the same from the above ON - i toggled OFF - same result perfect!!! again toggling from now ON to OFF - same result perfect!!!
ok. next i restarted this project, copied and pasted all the audio tracks with tempo changes etc... into a new project. - after that restated Sonar and loaded this new project... - the playback was jittery - ok (expected)
- opening up the Audio Snap Palette and did the above steps - again same results... perfect playback and display!!
may i make the conclusion that it doesnt matter if the Audio Snap Palette feature is ON or OFF? just by toggling, it will somehow work around this issue? another further experiment is i noticed that if i use the PEN TOOL to draw in TEMPO curves, the wave display either shortens or expands correspondingly. this above track used is the same one used in #31 and #45 of this tread. thanks all... cheers!!!

Hi CakeAlexS... as with #46 as follows: Qutoe ----------------------- STEPS 1) Open a large Project. 2) Insert 10 tempo changes in the first minute of the track 3) Play EXPECTED Timeline smoothly scrolls left to right ACTUAL Timeline does not scroll smoothly. It's noticeably worse when you hover the mouse over it. ---------------- Quote after all this is done, open up the Audio Snap Palette... if at first the ON/OFF button is in either state, simply toggle it (once is good enough). After that PLAY. - surprising all will be fine... not just but PERFECT!!! :-) [it seems its must be done for every audio track]
if after PLAY, you toggle the ON/OFF state to its previous - it is also just as perfect...
as mentioned, you can also use the PEN tool to draw in Tempo Changes - again on PLAY.... PERFECT...!!!! :-)
hope this helps ya... thanks & cheers!!!!

Sorry for late response Keyz. Well I tried it, it seems a little better but it's really hard to tell at my end. It's not obvious. Maybe this is the pseudocertainty effect at my end. I know this issue is resolved and other tests have confirmed this... Maybe we can get feedback from other people?

Hi Alex, thank you again for your reply. i apologise for being late as i haven't been on for a while. Reading the above, it looks like most others have had this issue resolved with X3e. However, as per my post #79 above, it seems that i am still having this issue. The only resolve for me is to use the "Audio Snap" workaround. its not a big issue actually, now that i have stumbled on the workaround. oh BTW, this happens when i open the project to work on it. Its just that every time i open up this particular file , i have to apply the "Audio Snap" workaround - all is fine after that. on another project, i noted that if the entire project contains just MIDI files, using just soft-synths and no audio files, there is no such problem. Hope this help too... once again many thanks to all who helped... cheers!!!

I just opened the X3 Demo file and inserted random tempo changes from 38.93 - 120.11 BPM (base tempo is 85). I had to bump up my ASIO buffer a bit, but did not notice any difference between playing normally. If zoomed in so that only ~5 measures are in view it seems to not be as "smooth" as when zoomed out further. I am not sure if "zoom level" is playing a part in this.

Hi All, This is happening for me in X3E and Platinum, in a mixed (audio & midi) project with tempo changes. However, performing the toggle of the AudioSnap palette on all audio tracks results in smooth scrolling of the time line - including when I zoom in/out. I'm happy with that!
