DMX 6Fire 24/96

I have been having trouble trying to find out if Terratec is going to release drivers which are suitable for use in Windows 7 with my DMX6Fire24/96 soundcard. I know it is not compatible now after using the Microsoft Windows 7 utility program which enables you to see what hardware/software will work in Win7. The soundcard has never been a problem but I would like to move from XP to Win7 if possible. For such a lovely soundcard I would like to continue its use. Anyone have any ideas?

I have this soundcard too. Been using it for years now. It would be great if Terratec would come up with Win7  drivers.

I believe there are x64 drivers for these...but still beta. Don't know it they'll work with Win7.

Check out their ftp site for the beta drivers

I had the same card, but abandoned it when I upgraded to a new computer and win 7. The 6fire was a good card 7 years back, but the converters are not comprable to anything around nowdays. IMO even the creative lab cards converters are better than the Terratec now. I know this is not what you want to hear, but moving on to a new card is my advice.

I have the EWX24/96 which I believe uses the same drivers as the DMX 6Fire. I wouldn't be at all confident that mine would work under W7, so personally I'd look at the Echo Mia MIDI *IF* I needed to migrate to W7 for any reason. But I'm perfectly happy with XP Home at present and my EWX24/96.

Hi Tané,

I've got a Terratec DMX 6fire too, and I don't remember even seeing Vista drivers for it, so I don't have much hope for 7 drivers.  A shame, since it's a decent unit.

Just got this email from Terratec:

Hello Vic,

I'm sorry to tell you, that the DMX 6Fire 24/96 is 'EndOfLife', this means
unfortunately that there will be no other drivers anymore....

Sorry !

Hi Tane
,
Do these drivers also work with WinXP?

Any changes/improvements in the card's performance?

Thanks.

Are there any changes/improvements from the v5.4 drivers?

If I remember correctly, you have to follow some specific steps to update the DMX drivers, too?

Thanks.

I used to own a DMX 6Fire 24/96 and tried to use it back when the beta Vista drivers first came out.  It didn't work that well for me so I scrapped the audio interface for a Lynx.

I did move it into my other PC which also ran Vista and I received a lot of pops and clicks even listening to mp3 files through Media Player.  I eventually just got rid of it and used the on-board soundcard in that PC because it worked significantly better in Vista.

RE: Windows 7 and Terratec DMX 6 Fire 24/96

I've been very happy with my DMX on XP and shifting to W7 was a leap of faith. My PC is fairly old (Intel 875 PBZ mobo, P4 Northwood 3.4) and contains all my music library on 2 HDD's, so I took the plunge with a fair amount of anxiety.

I can confirm that the Vista driver v5.53.3.144 from http://ftp.terratec.de/Audio/DMX6fire2496/Update/ works on W7.
I'm not using Windows Media Player on W7 but MediaMonkey v3.2, with the Asio output dll v0.67 SSE2. On the control panel of the DMX6 24/96, Asio/Gsif is activated in 24 bit (standard buffer). Other settings: Digital Out= Mix, Buffer 10 msec.

Sound settings in W7: after a lot of struggle (clicks, pops, cuts, white noise, more micro clicks, no sound, etc) the settings below work fine for me (although some fine-tuning is likely to further enhance the sound):

(1) Playback Devices in W7
a) Speakers>DMX6 Fire 24/96= Default Device
Properties>Advanced>Default Shared Mode= 24 bit-48K
Exclusive Mode: 'Allow Applications...' & 'Give Exclusive...' are on.
b) Spdif Interface>Properties> Supported Formats= All boxes checked. Default Shared Mode= 2ch, 16bit-44.1

(2) Recording Devices
Spdif Interface= DMX 6Fire 24/96= Default Device

Just testing with my PC 2.1 speakers (Altec FX 6021) the overall sound quality is clearly above XP: expanded soundfield, space & depth, details, warmer nuances. Using the DMX front panel Spdif output to an external DAC for listening to the main audio system brings a even fuller envelope. The DMX6 still offers a more than decent performance on W7 and is a good choice on a secondary PC so I won't discard it.

Have you tried using the front panel rca inputs and outputs for recording and playback with these drivers in Win7?

I'd like to continue using my DMX 6Fire with Win7 too.

Hello Vicsant,

My post yesterday was claiming victory too soon. All was fine as described. But this morning, I had cuts in the sound using the Spdif ouput (sound on PC speakers was fine) so I uninstalled the Vista DMX driver. And now, I am unable to re-install it, it won't be recognized in the Devide Manager. Quite agonizing, and all the more frustrating given the brief taste of heaven I experienced yesterday and now ending up with nothing! I guess I will have to reinstall Seven from a clean slate.

Re:DMX 6Fire 24/96 2009/12/03 05:44:13 (permalink)
Happy to report that all is well again, both on PC speakers & Spdif output. I found the main culprit was actually the Asio output dll in Media Monkey, causing clicks. On XP-SP3, the Asio output was real clean. Go figure. Switching back to the Wave output solved that. Great sound again. Other settings are unchanged.

So there's still a life for the DMX with W7. Finding a replacement in PCI isn't that easy, unless the budget for a Lynx AES is available.

Hi all

I'm new here, but I registered to say thanks for helping me sort out my DMX 6fire 24/96 with Windows 7 64 bit... My settings are slightly different so I thought I would help out too if anyone out there is facing the same problem. \

I just got an Intel i7 and loaded windows 7 just to give it a try (with Adobe Audition, Korg Triton Extreme with SPDIF linked to my pc  and with the soundcard) and see if I can make it work. It does! Some clicks and pops but I'll try out Jean Francois' advice and see what happens. The system works really fast so if everything goes well, I am not going back to XP!

So my settings are :

PLAYBACK DEVICES
Speakers DMX 6fire Default device, 24bit, 48000, uncheck both boxes of exclusive mode
SPDIF Interface Disabled

RECORDING DEVICES
SPDIF Interface, uncheck listen to this device, playback through speakers DMX 6fire, uncheck both boxes of exclusive mode, default format 2 channel, 16 bit, 48000Hz

I hope this helps. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again!

P.S.
Of course, if you want to record from other devices, using the line in or microphone or whatever, you just set that as default, uncheck exclusivity options, listen through DMX speakers again and select the input quality (usually 16 bit, 44100).

I had some crazy problems with the dmx6fire in vista.  It would work fine for a while.  I would leave the computer and come back an hour later to no sound.  Sound could always be restored by disabling and then re-enableing the device, so I put a batch file to do that on my desktop.  Anyway, when the W7 compatibility checker said it wouldn't work with W7, I decided it was time to move on.  However, I would love to use the card in my older computer which I plan to upgrade to W7, so it's nice to know that it can be made to work.  It exactly met my needs for several years.

By the way, those who say they have it working in W7 all say they're using the 5.53 driver.  Does it not work with 5.54?

Whoops, never mind, getting my driver numbers confused...

Hi there! I'm also trying to run a dmx 6fire under windows 7. It works quite well, but wenn i try to change my asio settings int the "asio control panel" i get a bluescreen. prompt is something about the dmx6fire.sys not working well, but i cant really read it because the system shuts down after a few seconds.
after rebooting i get these problem details:

  BCCode:    3b
  BCP1:    00000000C0000005
  BCP2:    FFFFF88007101502
  BCP3:    FFFFF88006783F70

  OS Version:    6_1_7600
  Service Pack:    0_0
  Product:    256_1

(don't know if that helps anyway)

my system konfiguration is:
intel i core 5          CPU
asus p7p55d        motherboard
OCZ 4gB DDR3 1333 RAM
Windows 7 64 bit

thank you for your help!

Hey there, I also got a blue screen when trying to reset the Asio settings in the control panel, but even though I didn't change them, everything works fine and the quality is good.
The only problem I am dealing with now is that sometimes the card de-activates  unexpectedly or it goes crazy and starts producing sounds out of nowhere, like echoing some of the internal computer sounds.
I suppose that I will eventually have to switch back to XP, or buy a new card. Pity, because this card was exactly what I needed and served me great for so long.

yeah. seems so.
uah. im using my onboard-card right now.
I could use the dmx 6fire like this, but it would be great if i could change the asio settings, especially the buffer size to reduce the input latency. (sometimes i'm recording) I already tried to access the configuration via "ASIO4ALL" but it was no good.
