Eligibility for free upgrade to next version?
I purchased the upgrade from Sonar PE version 5 to version 8 last weekend (on June 27) from a local retailer, and today Cakewalk announced that anyone upgrading on July 1 or after will get a free upgrade to the next version when it comes out. I haven't registered the upgrade yet -- haven't even opened the package and installed it for that matter. The announcement indicates the eligibility is based on the "purchase date". Since it won't be registered until after July 1, wouldn't the registration date determine eligibility (how would they know when I purchased it when it comes time to download the v9 upgrade?).

It will be the full version of the new release. "Updates" are downloads, "upgrades" are "new versions".

Free upgrade is one good deal as it's usually over £100 here. Cakewalk always look after their hardcore new version updaters by charging early adopters more than anyone else, they then find the bugs, which Cakewalk irons out and then charge everyone else less.

One thing I want to know is, how the hell do you buy a new version of something like Sonar and still don't have it installed 4 days later? I rip it open immediately and install it ASAP. But then again, I have issues. Mike

http://www.cakewalk.com/sonarupgrade/ If you haven't read the advert there's some interesting language used: EG Starting July 1st, 2009, when you upgrade to SONAR 8 Studio or SONAR 8 Producer at Cakewalk.com or select music and sound retailers, you will be eligible to download the next paid update to SONAR for free.

Fascinating that the page indeed says "download" the next paid "update" as opposed to "upgrade." Not sure what to make of this. The current version is pretty big for a download, coming in @ what? ~9GB with the Dim Pro library. And I'm assuming by "update" they actually meant "upgrade," and that it won't be one of those things like: "We're releasing Sonar 8.5, for just $49." Sounds strange, but Apple did exactly that with Logic Pro once-upon-a-time. I'd hate to buy 8.3 and end up getting 8.5 for free. Why doesn't it specifically say "get version 9" for free? That seems more logical. Perhaps they're changing the name or the numbering scheme? - zevo

I'm sure the Cakewalk chaps who frequent this forum will come on and reveal all. If you mention the VS 700 they appear from nowhere. I'll try and lure them: Will the new paid update work well with the VS 700?

I've held off Sonar 8 so far, and had decided to skip it and wait for 9 (or whatever's next). But I'd definitely give it a go if I'm going to get the full version of 9 whenever it comes out. - zevo

Yeh, that probably wasn't stated well. What I meant was: how would the upgrade process determine my purchase date since it sounds like the next version would be a download, so the only thing Cakewalk would have to go by would be the registration date of the upgrade to 8. I didn't mean to imply that I want to try and sneak one past Cakewalk. It is strange though, as others noted, that they said "download". Not only would it be a big download, but presumably there would be a new hard copy manual with the next version.

it certainly implies a sonar 8.5 rather that a sonar 9, and one that'll need a (presumably cheap) payment - it may include score improvements and rapture full? and certainy the new vocal strip plug-in...intriguing. also implies that a paid update is not far off...within the next month or so...

But guys- They do this EVERY year! Always right around July / Aug, they start with the 'buy now- get free later" type of sales. Plus they do have some kind of promo every month. Download! Yea, that IS different but lends one to think its got to be an update and NOT an upgrade. Prob because 8 was so substantial that its "update" this time around. We shall soon see......... edit: forgot to mention that its always by purchase date and never by registration date. Its the date of purchase that determines everything, because one can register any ole time.

Wonderful, after 2 rounds of not doing this, (free upgrades) they are now advertising it. I just bought the upgrade to 8 at $129, havnt even done a project with it yet. I guess thats what I get for being a constant paying customer, Im sure you all remember the way this went over the last 2 rounds.

Interesting. I am definitely interested in this offer. But I would feel somewhat ripped off if it was just an 8.5 update, unless it was a really cool/big 8.5 update.... In other words, we don't want them to call it Sonar 9 when it is really just Sonar 8.5. We will have to see how it all pans out.

It's always interesting when you get an offer and, before deciding whether you want to take it or not, you first have to decide whether its language is intentionally slippery or unintentionally sloppy. It becomes even more interesting when the offer itself contains an unambiguous proofing error.

ORIGINAL: RodC I just bought the upgrade to 8 at $129, havnt even done a project with it yet. I got it for the same promo price at sweetwater. The upgrade price now for producer is back to the usual $179. So what's the complaint, exactly? You got a 28% discount off the normal upgrade price, plus probably free shipping. I guess thats what I get for being a constant paying customer, Im sure you all remember the way this went over the last 2 rounds. The last was buy v5 get v6 for free. Every version subsequent to v6 had some special promo price leading up to the next release (e.g., $99 upgrades). They have not done the "get the next version free" promo with one exception: they've always had a 30-day or so grace period for buyers of the previous version. Alex or somebody said last August or thereabouts: we're not doing the "get the next version free" this year (w/ v8), so don't even ask. So how exactly do you feel ripped off? Is that you expect there to be a "get the next version free" promo with every single release? Except for the typical grace period around the time of the next release, expecting that the company will always have a certain promo deal every year is a little ridiculous, no?

Hi guys Is there a precedent for this kind of offer? I just upgraded from SONAR Studio 8 to Producer 8 in last month's special offer. The 'normal' upgrade from S8SE to S8PE is UK£175 + £5 p&p The offer I took advantage of included: * The upgrade * A copy of Scott's Power book * The SONAR 8 HD DVD * Free delivery That little lot cost me £99 Ignoring the book and the DVD, I appear to have saved £81 Why I ask if there's a precedent is because I'm wondering now if this 'Update' is going to be worth more or less than that

ORIGINAL: Marah It's always interesting when you get an offer and, before deciding whether you want to take it or not, you first have to decide whether its language is intentionally slippery or unintentionally sloppy. Indeed. Is it intentionally slippery: something I don't usually equate to Cake, but that I've had from other companies enough before to be worried. Cake's still a for-profit company with a sales/marketing department like any other. Or is it unintentionally sloppy: something I also don't usually equate to Cake, but after watching Mac users trying to decipher the Dim Pro installer/updater instructions for the Leopard patch, as well as the confused threads regarding the instructions for one of the earlier Sonar 8 updates (can't remember which one), I suppose this is also a possibility. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt and say it's just a poorly/quickly worded promo, on the heels of another promo that ended yesterday (I think). But the Steinbergian-like feeling I have after the P5 cancellation (it's coming, it's coming, good year ahead... nevermind, it's not coming after all, it's canceled), I'm having a harder time with the benefit of doubt than I used to. (sorry for the comparison... former SX3 users will understand what I mean) Perhaps we should just start a thread and specifically ask: Is this for version 9? Or not? They don't usually use bait-and-switch/sly-dog tactics. At least, not in my experience. - zevo

A "paid update" is usually a major point release, not a major version release. Like Logic and Pro Tools and others (Cubendo? Samplitude?) in recent years. I can imagine there are 1001 workflow enhancements and bug fixes that they can package up into a major point release. For this year they're not doing a mega release, apparently... if you own S8, then you have all the double DVDs you need for the time being... only need a 100MB download to bring things up to 8.5. Isn't that what everyone has been wanting and ****ing about all this time? No more yearly mega releases with useless plugins and synths clogging up your DVD drives? Plus, it's even downloadable! Yay. Oh... I can hear it now... I'm not paying no $50 for a bunch of bug fixes... The should have released v8.5 for free and called it 8.3.2! Love this time of year.

Update the core functionality in ways that people have been asking (staff view, nested folders, beatscape 2.0, others), but NOT the bundle. A small file size (download-worthy), and a minimal price tag ($49/$79/whatever). In fact, to some degree I'd actually like that model, and if they chime in and say that's the case, I'll probably still go for the purchase. - zevo
