Can't find a reference to this frequently asked question in this FAQ. Q: "When I record on Track 2, I get the audio from Track 1, too. How do I stop this from happening?" A: Turn off the "What U Hear" option in your soundcard's recording options. May also be called "Wave Out Mix" or something similar. Has to be asked and answered on a daily basis. Can we get it added to the FAQ? Thanks, Steve!

ORIGINAL: Brian_1 Nicely done. If it helps, I've gone thru a learning curve by upgrading from 98SE to XP Pro & Sonar 3. The Windows upgrade caused many problems. The solution was to completely reformat my OS drive and install the full version of XP Pro. I highly recommend this over purchasing an upgrade from a previous version of Windows. Brian You can do a clean install using an upgrade disk. You will just have to have the install CD or disk from the previous version available during the install of the upgrade version. You just do a format and install using the upgrade disk. Great thing you have done here Rousseau! Dennis

A quick administrative note: We had to un-pin the original SONAR Faq post. Only threads created by Moderators can be pinned to the top of the Forum. We think you'll like the new solution. We've created, and pinned, a SONAR Forum FAQ post that will serve as a bookmark to the thread - (this thread). The information you've assembled in the SONAR Forum FAQ is terrific. We hope it becomes the most frequently accessed thread in the forum. Feel free to point new users here when appropriate, and please keep those cards and letters coming! I've seen that before. It's the Windows Media (WMA) installer that appears hung. Thing is, it isn't really quite hung. It's waiting for your input. Problem is, the dialog is invisible! I kid you not! Run the SONAR installer again and wait for it to "hang". Make sure the SONAR install dialog does not have focus. At that point, press Alt+spacebar. You'll see this invisible dialog's system menu open. It'll display "Move" and ""Close" options. Select "Close". Easier still, just press spacebar when the invisible dialog opens. I think you may have to do it twice to dismiss another invisible dialog. I know this sounds crazy, but I've been bitten by this and found this dialog hiding. I suspect it's because the WMA installer is being run by the SONAR installer in what's called silent mode, a directive telling it to simply run without prompting the user for input. Seems Microsoft didn't get that part quite right. Hope this helps.

The info on this thread has helped TON! I have 512 MB ram, 1.73 GHZ machine, have a delta Omni Soundcard, Use a midisport 2 x 2. I am running into a big problem where there appear to be 2 instruments playing with my keyboard at the same time. I want to use my kepboard instruments because they sound actually halfway decent. How do I remove the additional instrument that seems to be coming from the omni. I installed the 2nd and 3rd disk after following the instructions in this thread. Am I completely missing something. Your help is greatly appreciated.

FAQ Correction: Hardware Step #3 - Neither Mytek nor Apogee build sound cards. A professional setup would be Lynx, some RME devices, and anything you use as long as you are using fairly expensive converters first (Mytek, Apogee, etc.). Also, let's make #3 be Commercial Studio/Pro Project Studio Also, let's make #2 - simply be Project Studio.

I've never received an answer to my problem... so since it sounds like you have the same setup, perhaps you can help? I've got a DELL PC with 2 xeon processors, tons of ram, all the crap turned off that i don't need for my DAW and 2 Aardvark q10's. Everything worked fine until i installed the second Q10. Now, i get random drop outs - all audio stops entirely. I was rebooting for a while. I contacted Aardvark and they sent me a patch called "cpu.bat", which basically restarts just the sound card. This is extremely disruptive when doing creative work! Aside from reinstalling everything, which would be disastrous considering how unorganized i've been with my plugins, any clue why this happens and how i can fix it once and for all?

A very popular questions seems to go like: Can I use Sonar for House, Hip-Hop, Techno, Christian, Country, traditional Bulgarian Hurdy Gurdy, Industrial, Rock, ... music? I think it's a good idea to put a generic response in the famous and ever growing FAQ: SONAR is a software tool to record and mix/produce musical performances. Any performance. Any style. While there may be programs that fit individual work or producing preferences better than others, SONAR has no restrictions with regards to the music a user may want to make. It does not limit a user's creativity to only specific sounds, styles or rhythms.

Also if you are interested in going this route, some of the high-end mixers combine a full mixer (with pre-amps, EQ etc.) with a MIDI control surface and even a PC compatible output, in which case you can record direct from the mixer without even needing a soundcard. Could you direct me to more information about these type mixers? Thanks.

Stupid question, maybe... I have a lot of plugins. Will I need to reinstall anything once I install Sonar 4, and should I install the plugins that come on the Sonar 4 disk, or will it screw things up because I have some of them already (like the Sonitus FX suite which came with S3)? Thanks!

I am having alot of problems using sonar with the tascam us-428. My latest one is this. I spent the weekend recording songs into my HP 1.2 gig laptop using the 428. The playback thru the 428 was fine but now I am away from home and I'm trying to work with the songs using the laptop as the output. When I press play, the line starts to slowly move across the screen, not quite freezing, but almost. Some unearthly sounds then begin comming from the laptop speakers. Any suggestions?

How about a quick note at the top of the FAQ: "If you are having a specific problem with your Sonar setup and would like assistance, please take the following steps before posting: 1) Read this FAQ in its entirity to see if your problem has been covered already; 2) Use the Search function to see if there are any old threads tackling your problem; and if all else fails 3) Start a new thread. If you need to start a thread, your post should contain as much detail as possible regarding your PC setup, audio hardware etc as appropriate, and should be as detailed as possible regarding symptoms displayed and workarounds you've already tried. Do not post your questions at the bottom of this thread please, this thread is for suggested FAQ entries only - all posts should include both a question and the suggested answer, or a correction to facts already in the FAQ document." .. might thin out the "Help me!" posts from here and put them somewhere they might have a chance of getting answered.

Well, as promised, here are the aud.ini tweaks that have been submitted to the forum in the last few weeks. I was hoping there'd be more, but this is all there is for now, and I didn't want to sit on this forever as there have already been a couple of posts requesting them. Anyway, I don't doubt this section will grow over time... Thanks to all who contributed. (These tweaks were, for the most part, submitted before the release of version 4, so should work for Sonar 3, though may or may not for Sonar 4). JD +++++++++++++++++++++++ TWEAKS FOR AUD.INI FILE Since the most common suggestion (to solve problems) is to delete aud.ini and re-profile the soundcard, it's probably a good idea to save any custom aud.ini settings in a separate text file so they can be easily incorporated into the new aud.ini file. +++++++++++++++++++++++ PicCacheMB = XX Sets the maximum size of the folder that holds the pictures of your waveforms (.wov files). The default is 20 mb, which is too small. This causes Sonar to have to frequently recreate the waveforms which can take a long time when opening a project. Recommend you set it to 100 - 200 mb assuming you have sufficient hard disk space available. On a related note, make sure the picture cache folder is on a different drive than your audio (assuming you have a separate drive for audio). +++++++++++++++++++++++ Meter Frame Size MeterFrameSizeMS=<10-200> (default=40)* Meters in SONAR show peak (or RMS) values at a given instant in time. The actual peak value displayed by a meter is the highest peak recorded in an interval of time referred to as a "Meter Frame". The default size for a meter frame is 40 milliseconds, which is an accuracy of 25 FPS. The ‘MeterFrameSizeMS’ AUD.INI variable allows you to change the size of this interval. It goes in the [Wave] section of AUD.INI. For example: [Wave] MeterFramSizeMS=40 Setting this value to a lower value will make the meters record peak info for smaller time slices. However this can also increase the metering CPU and memory cost. * = although SONAR doesn’t enforce a fixed value range, the recommended range should be between 10 and 200 milliseconds. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Default EQ Position (SONAR 3 Producer Edition Only) DefaultEqPosition=<0 or 1> (default=0) The integrated channel EQ can be either pre FX bin or post FX bin. The default position is pre FX bin, but you can change the position of any channel EQ by right-clicking the EQ plot and choosing the desired position from the context menu. The ‘DefaultEqPosition’ AUD.INI variable lets you specify the default EQ position for all new tracks/buses. This variable lives in the [Aud] section of AUD.INI, and legal values are: 0 (pre FX) or 1 (post FX). For example: [Aud] DefaultEqPosition=1 Note: this variable only applies to SONAR 3 Producer Edition, not SONAR 3 Studio Edition. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ ExtraPluginBufs=128 or 256 or 512 It is necessary to incease this extra plugin buffer size if you are using a plugin which requires delay compensation e.g. Linear Phase EQs, convolution verbs, look-ahead limiters etc. The only negative is a trivial increase in memory usage. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ MOTU 828mkII specific tweak: In your aud.ini file find the flag called KsUseInputEvent and set the value to 1. You should notice better perceived latency in WDM with the MOTU drivers using this. Without this tweak, WDM is noticably more latent than ASIO with the same apparent settings. With the tweak, they seem about the same. +++++++++++++++++++++++++

Rousseau, I reckon this should go on your FAQ. Apparently it is NOT in the Readme file. While I'm here is anyone aware of a more comprehensive listing of all the INI file parameters in use by Sonar. I can't seem to find a list available on the CW site. The fix involves setting a new variable in your AUD.INI file. (I'm pretty sure this is all in the README). In AUD.INI, try changin this variable: [Wave] EnableLiveADCRecalc=<0 or 1> (default = 1) When set to zero, SONAR will bypass nearly all of the expensive work that needs to get done to recompute PDC after an audio signal routing change. Your audio will be slightly out of sync -- imperceptibly if you are running at very low latency -- but there won't be a gap. Regardless of how this variable is set, PDC gets recomputed when you stop and restart playback.

I'm not really sure what "good midi" is, but I thought I'd give it a go. If it means that you can't get MIDI to work with your setup, then this might help. Do you see your MIDI inputs/outputs in the MIDI section of Sonar? By default, when you start Sonar, it should warn you if you don't have any MIDI inputs. If that's the case, then you'll probably need to install the drivers for your MIDI 2x2. If you do have them, make sure they're activated in the MIDI section. I'm not sure why you put this in the FAQ part of the Forum. I'm pretty sure you'd get better response in the main body of the Forum, by asking this question out right and supplying more info on what you're actually trying to do.
