    Hi Americo-

You're toggling the ACT button on/off too many times.

    1. Click on the ACT button once to turn on its "Learn" mode
    2. Twiddle the controls in your plug-in
    3. Twiddle the knobs/faders on your controller
(Note you can make multiple connections in one shot this way. They'll follow the order in which you moved them.)
    4. Click on the ACT button to turn off "Learn" mode.

    HTH-

A quick question - is act the preferred method of controlling plugins?  When you record the changes, does it create data somewhere that you can edit manually?

ACT is for linking your surface to your plugin for hands on control. If you also want recorded data simply enable the 'Write' and 'Read' buttons on the plugin/synth itself. This records automation data onto the plugin track that you can edit.

    Cheers,
    Max.

If you get a chance to compare Novation's Automap, you may prefer to ACT.  I do.
