Faderport not listed in Sonar 8 control surfaces. How do I get it to work?

Just got a new computer with windows 7 and sonar 8 loaded.  My Faderport will not work or be recognized.  What to do?

It doesn't appear that Presonus has a Windows 7 driver for the Faderport, so you can try the latest drivers that are available or you will have to wait until they release a driver.

I sorta figured this out, but the faderport is still not 100% working... after downloading and installing the latest drivers, copy faderport.dll from the presonus directory to the cakewalk shared surfaces directory. Then you have to register the dll with windows using regsvr32 from the command prompt. It is now recognized by Sonar, but only the fader and pan knob work; no transport functions.

The routine that jlightfoot worked perfectly for me. I copied the 64-bit DLL to the Shared Surfaces under the 64-bit Program Files, and the 32-bit to the x86 Sonar. I registered them both and the Faderport is working perfectly in both Sonar 32 and 64-bit.

Roger, sorry to bother you with this:  Can you please be more specific as to how you've 'registered' the dll files?  Which program do you use to do this?  Also, when you guys talk about the dll files - you're probably referring to the driver you can download off their website, right?  The one that should work with Vista/64 und Sonar 6+  ... Right?

I'd really appreciate your help as I've got the same problems with my good old Faderport.  I am using Sonar 8.5.2/64 bit on Windows 7/64.

    Thanks.

    Heinz.

Sorry for the delay guys. I'm going by memory here since I'm not at my DAW.

After you install the Faderport files, the DLL file can be found in "C:\Program Files\PreSonus\FaderPort\FaderPort Dll".  Copy Faderport.DLL file to the "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Surfaces" folder.

Make sure Sonar is closed, and then invoke the Run Command by using the Windows key and and "R" key. Then type:

    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Surfaces\faderport.dll"

Finally, you'll click OK and you'll see a message that confirms the DllRegisterServer was successful.

Now you can go through the normal steps In Sonar to add the Faderport MIDI ports and control surface. The manual in the latest Presonus FaderPort download includes a section that is dedicated to a Sonar installation.

Roger, I'd like to thank you very much for your help!! Now I got my little Faderport to work, thanks to you! The registry did it.  Btw, I was in contact with a Presonus tech, and he never, ever mentioned the registry process ... so far for good customer support, eh?
Thanks again, you made my morning!

Hmm.  I just bought a Faderport and am trying to install with Sonar 8.5.  Downloaded the latest drivers but it won't let me register the dll.  It gives me an error that the dll loaded but ther regserver gives an error code.

Running W7 64 but with the 32bit version of Sonar 8.5.  Faderport does appear in the MIDI Devices dialog where I can select it.  However, it's not appearing in the Controller dailogue.

The download offers two versions of the dll x32/x64.  As my OS is 64 that's the one I'm copying to the Cakewalk(x86) folders.  Actually I tried both but get the same error message.  Frustrating...

    Any help much appreciated.

Well, I got the dll registered (Adminsitrator login, sheesh!).  All appears good, MIDI Devices set up, and the controller surface gives me the faderport option.  However, while it stores the controller it mever keeps the 'input/output' port values.  And I'm still getting nothing from the controller.

I have the same problem with my Faderport (it has worked before, in another install...)
Does it say "Faderport -1" in your controller surface overview?

I also have connected my BCR2000, which actually gives me the same error? It says "bcr200console -1"...

It might be our Sonar setup, and not the Faderport

Found out. This is due to 64bit compability ( I think)

I just installed sonar in 32 bit (never bothered before) and both my Faderport and BCR2000 with AJ's console is working great.

Reinstalled 64 bit also, just to make sure. Same as before.

Istvan, I think it may have something to do with windows registry files. I bought a faderport for X1 Producer, couldn't make it work AT ALL, and the Presonus tech on the phone told me THEY WON"T WORK in X1 Producer, and I should just "sell it on Ebay"!  Great support!! In this forum, someone wrote that he got it working but the motorized faders would not track the screen.  Good luck!! I'll sell you mine for CHEAP!

@carlosjurew - How much do you want for it? I know someone who would probably buy it from you.

Gustabo, I'll take $30 for it. 1 minor scratch on the slider silk screening, otherwise it's unused. I have the disk for it, but recommend downloading the latest driver directly from Presonus, as I did. If you're still interested, get back with me and we'll make arrangements.

Cool, Dude!! I'm glad somebody had some luck with this product. I'm gonna go crazy and buy a Mackie MCU with 2 extensions and a C4. To hell with Presonus. They apparently don't take Cakewalk seriously (the way WE do)

Gustabo, (and all others) I also have a brand new Akai MPD32 for sale (NEVER used). I paid full price for it from Musicians Friend 3 months ago and decided to use something different. Shoot me a bid and we'll make a deal!

Now you can go through the normal steps In Sonar to add the Faderport MIDI ports and control surface. The manual in the latest Presonus FaderPort download includes a section that is dedicated to a Sonar installation.
I copied the dll to the shared plugin folder, but when i enter regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Surfaces\faderport.dll"
It says The module C/program files/cakewalk/sharedsurfaces/faderport.dll failed to load. make sure the binaryis stored yada yada yada

Using win 7 i7 64bit with Sonar32bit. Faderport driver are up to date and it can be seen in sonars MIDI menu
I think this is about the same message I got, in this tread:
    http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=2019324&mpage=1#2371536
Workaround: I actually had to reinstall the whole OS...

I did not get the rights to do the registry change. (and yes, I did run as administrator :))
Seemed to be something about the .net part, if you google the error message you can find alot of other program/games which has the same problem. I think I found a fair amount of MS Flight Simulator problems I think?

Wow and thanks.. Im not going to install my OS again and load a few days of programs onto it again. Its cheaper for me to sell my faderport and get something else.

Anyone want to buy a faderport dirt cheap? $40 and its yours :)

    Yo CJ

Last year you wrote you were using the FP as transport only with 8.5.

Does it still work with 8.5?  Is it just a SX thang?

Could it be you need the .net update?

The presonus forum had some advice to install the version 1.2 firmware. This fixed a bunch of issues for use with PT, FL, Logic, and Studio 1,...  Nothing specific about SX.

Recommended is to install the 1.2 software and firmware. And then install the 1.3.5 software ONLY.

Gonna test it now. Hopefully it will fix the project-not-opening-when-faderport-is-connected annoyance.

Took a few times to get the correct buttons to flash per the instructions. Including a reboot.

Worked in many projects and then went nutty when opening a big project.  I will try later after a cold boot.

An important part:  the FP should NOT be connected when installing driver, just like lots of USB thangs.

I installed the Sonar trial today on a new computer.

I started it, and did some configuration and testing.

    And then:
    Installed the Faderport driver
The Device manager had it listed as an unknown device.
Registered the DLL, which was in the sonar shared devices folder.
Windows then  listed it as a sound device.
           Connected the USB cable.
Sonar found it and added it to the list of surfaces.
I selected it from the list and tested.

    Works ok.
