All Sonar X1, X1a, and 8.5 Users Please Read Important!!!

Ok, I just discovered this via another thread (http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2170967).
 
I am on Win7 64 bit with both 8.5 and X1 installed in 64 bit.
 
The SonitusFXDelay.dll file (version 3.3.4.184) located at (on my system) C:/Program Files/Cakewalk/Shared Plugins/ has a memory leak, which will slowly drain your system of all availble ram until it crashes.
 
To test this, simply load a project and insert the Sonitus Delay into an fx bin. (You may already have a project like this) Now hold down the space bar with something and veiw your memory manager (In Win7 goto Task Manager/Performance Tab and watch your memory drain away.)
 
My system lost 10 gigs of memory in 2 1/2 minutes!
 
If you are constantly starting and stoping your projects while you work on them as I do, your system will eventually crash.
 
The fix is to use the SonitusFXDelay.dll file located on the Sonar 8.0 installation disk. I started the intall program on that disk and only selected the SonitusFXDelay.dll to install. Be sure to read each prompt carefully so you don't install anything else. If you do it correctly it will only install the selected file.
 
Be sure to rename the SonitusFXDelay.dll file (version 3.3.4.184) already on your system to SonitusFXDelay1.dll or something and move it to another folder somewhere safe. Just in case you need it.
 
Once the install is done (should only take a second) check to see if the SonitusFXDelay.dll file (version 3.3.3.221) is now in the above location.
 
Now try the test above again with the space bar. After 5 minutes, I actually GAINED 8 mb of ram! And my system is working fine.
 
Hope this helps and props to the original posters.
 
For as long as I've been a Sonar user and have been reading the forums, I've never heard of this before.

Sorry about this guys, I didn't realize there is a 32 bit and 64 bit version of this file. Here are both from my Sonar 8.0 disks.

This affects All XP, Vista, Win7, both 32 and 64 bit systems. This is not an OS problem.
 
Good File Versions:
SonitusFXDelay.dll file (version 3.3.3.221)
 
You can also use the version that came on the 8.5 download (3.3.3.372).
and all others (specifically 3.3.1.298, 3.3.3.221) 
 
Bad File Versions:
 
The SonitusFXDelay.dll file (version 3.3.4.184, and 3.3.3.141 that came with the 8.5 physical kit).

    Yes, I think that one is bad as well. Read the fifth post in the first link above.

    I strongly suggest trying the test above to see if your system is leaking memory first BEFORE trying the fix.

    I do a lot of start and stop and do get crashes sometimes on 8.5.3.

    My ego thought it was my lightning speed that made sonar crash every once in a while.

    Maybe it is this! I use that delay plug often!

    I use the Sonitus Delay in practically every project of mine and dont see this behavior. Then again I am running at 32-bit and mya just be some sort of 64-bit quirk.

    I just did the test and watched my ram shoot up steadily. I didnt need a crash. That was enough for me to try to install my 8.0 version of sonitus delay-

    I tried to install the delay and then I checked. Still gaining memory usage.

    I then renamed the sonitus delay dll as it was not reverted back to the old one and moved it to another folder like instructed above and installed 8.0 version again.


    This time, the older 8.0 delay was in the shared plugins folder.
    I guess it wont rewrite a newer version.

    Anyways, the 8.0 version also solved this problem for me.

    i use sonitus delay on almost every project as well. i performed the test and she's eating up memory like Ms Pac Man. we need a  EMERGENCY fix from Cakeland. Im willing to bet that thats the cause of the few crashes i do get. fix this and i'll prolly be as stable as a MPC!!!

    I guess if I'm using RP delay or Timeless it's not an issue?

    not only did it fix the leak. my little crackling problem i was having is apparently gone too. its crazy cause its the only plug that had problems and its also one of my favorites. i truly appreciate the dll A1 Mix Man

    This is a serious problem. If the Bakers knew about it there should be NO reason why it is not fixed. Has anyone ever filed a report? Just because we/you found a workaround doesn't mean we shouldn't all report it.
    The Sonitus delay is personally my staple. I am fortunate to still be working with version 8 so I am exempt from problems. But what if I wasn't? What if I never visited the forums? This kind of error should not persist from product to product or even patch to patch. It should be nipped in the bud immediately. Or should we start to call them the half-bakers and not the bakers?

    Confirmed.  To put in perspective, it's about 3K per start/stop.  Makes me want to go test all my other plugins...

    I'm using version  3.3.3.141 from PE 8.5 and it drains the memory. I take it the 8.5 install disc version won't work for the fix?  This is weird, indeed!

    I agree this is an issue, but am a little confused about the urgency.  I see about 3K of memory "leaked" in each start/stop cycle.  So, in a thousand such cycles, I've lost 3M.  In 30,000 cycles, about 100M.  I'd estimate the most I could possibly start/stop the transport in a productive session is about 12 times a minute, or about 7200 times in a 10 hour session - for a total of 22M memory lost.  The memory, of course, is regained when you close and open Sonar again.  I can't see an operational reason to hold the space bar down continuously.

    Perhaps my mileage is different, or I'm missing something.  Am I?
