CAKEWALK - PLEASE FIX "OUT OF MEMORY" ERROR !!!!!

CAKEWALK ...

IF YOU REALLY EXPECT PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS TO USE SONAR, YOU MUST FIX CRITICAL ERRORS.

I MUST BE ABLE TO IMPORT MP3'S IN ORDER TO A/B MY MIXES TO GET A PROFESSIONAL AND CURRENT SOUND.

MOST OF THE NEWER MP3'S FAIL TO IMPORT, GIVING AN "OUT OF MEMORY" ERROR.

I EXPECT SONAR TO BE A SOLID, STABLE, PROFESSIONAL DAW.

PLEASE DON'T TELL ME TO CONVERT MP3'S BEFORE IMPORTING.  THE PROBLEM IS INSIDE SONAR.

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX IT?

Putting that aside, I've just dragged 19 mp3 files of various origins into x1 in one go, and they're all fine.

When you say "most" mp3's fail to import, have you looked into what the differences are between the ones that do and the ones that don't?

first, this is a user forum and SHOUTING IN CAPS on the user forum to try to get cakewalk's attention is not going to get you good results.

second - where is your evidence that this out of memory error is a problem with sonar?  I have seen this error before and it's always been because of an mp3 which was exported incorrectly or is corrupt in some way.  usually someone leaves the 24bit or 32bit rate on for the mp3 conversion when it should be 16bit and some converters allow it.  there are other export error possibilities as well.

but my advice to you is, first:  stop shouting at the users.  2:  make sure the mp3's you are trying to import is not the real problem and 3:  if the mp3s are not the problem then make a case for why it's sonar's fault and not just blindly blame X1 for the error message.

I buy mp3's primarily from Amazon solely to A/B (Sure I'd prefer another format, but mp3 is what the retailers are selling, and what buyers are hearing on their players).  I've been using X1 since it came out.  Never had a problem before X1. The mp3s throw an out of memory error.  I've looked at the differences, I don't see any.  TAG formatting has been mentioned in the past, I don't see a difference there.  However, if Sonar is unable to read certain mp3s or TAG formats, I strongly believe Sonar should be fixed.

As far as shouting ... excuse me for that.  I'm very frustrated with this.  I'm trying to get attention from Cakewalk on this issue.  It's been brought up before and has not been adequately addressed, IMO.

if you want cake's attention then call them.  they do show up here and help sometimes, but it's not a guarantee and if you think it's important that cake themselves answer you then you need to call them and not try to get their attention in a user forum.

I'd check exactly what you're doing and the mp3s if I were you.

I do this a lot because when I'm not producing work for myself I'm usually sorting out demo tracks for others. My work method involves importing an mp3 initially as a scratch track.

I don't think I've ever seen the "out of memory" message, let alone all the time, so my conclusion is it is probably something unique to your system.

I'm not creating or modifying the mp3's.  I download direct from Amazon, file import to X1, and get the immediate "out of memory" error.  I've beend doing this for years, and the error never used to happen prior to X1. Now it happens on approx. 75% of the mp3's I get from Amazon.

Here's a quote from the above referenced thread: "The problem turned out to be that SONAR (as with Windows Explorer, Windows Media Player and many other applications) does not yet support ID3v2.4 tags, which is what Foobar2000 writes by default. ID3v2.3 tags are OK."

... so perhaps Sonar needs to be updated to read ID3v2.4 tags, if that is the problem.  (PS. I've never had any issue with these mp3's in Windows Media Player or other apps, it's only Sonar)

If that is indeed the problem then cakewalk does need to resolve it and I would stand behind you 100%!

if this is confirmed, it needs to be submitted as a problem report.  problem reports get reviewed.  user forum complaints do not (as a rule).

I stripped all the tags that I could access with my tag editor program, and results are the same.  I can't access all the tags, some are called internal tags, I could strip a few internals, but most of them don't allow editing.

Part of the reason I put this on the user forum was to see if others are having the same problem, especially with mp3's from Amazon.

load it into an audio editor, save as wav, then re-encode as mp3, at the same bitrate as the original but minus the tags - does it work? (do any mp3s import? could it be drm rather than tags?)

I also have loaded many MP3 files from many different sources into X1C and I have never had a problem.

Pwal has some good advice, especially to see if the MP3 will load. I might add that you could convert the MP3 to wav, possibly with the free Audacity wav editor, and import the wav file as another option.

actually, if you re-save it as a wav, you could just use that in sonar rather than re-encoding mp3 etc

Does the file have an embedded image?

I've run into issues where mp3 files with embedded images over a certain file size will causes this error when importing.

You can always extract the image from the file in a third-party utility. I'm sure there are many different 3rd party tools for this out there, but I've done this before myself with a free utility called Mp3tag that allows you to change the metadata associated with an mp3 file. You can find this at http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

Try saving the file without any embedded images and see if you can import it into SONAR.

    Best regards,

I'm not creating or modifying the mp3's.  I download direct from Amazon, file import to X1, and get the immediate "out of memory" error.  I've beend doing this for years, and the error never used to happen prior to X1. Now it happens on approx. 75% of the mp3's I get from Amazon.

... so perhaps Sonar needs to be updated to read ID3v2.4 tags, if that is the problem.  (PS. I've never had any issue with these mp3's in Windows Media Player or other apps, it's only Sonar)

I just imported 9 AMAZON mp3's of Peter Thorn (killer guitar player) No issues?
    So what's up?

It's not truly a memory issue as the OP noted, the mp3 bomb out immediately. I've experienced it with different mp3s, and had the same issue with some Amazon mp3s. I believe it is related to DRM issues, because when I take the same mp3 and "convert" it back to mp3 with VLC, the bombed-out import starts working. Every time.

Now that sounds reasonable-I do edit (covert) for sound and dynamics all the MP3's I get from Amazon. I use Sound Forge 10 Pro to do it.
At any rate certainly not a Sonar problem if that's it-which sounds likely

Why is anyone serious about audio using MP3s as the source? MP3s are ok if you need to distribute over the web, but they are definitely NOT the end game.

Have not experienced this problem in X1. I did experience the mp3 issues while importing in other daw's. I just go into wavelab and convert it to wav.

I've used converted mp3's to test the "sound" or similar mix a group was after. Then as mix sessions go, they can compare and contrast etc.
