URGENT - Cakewalk Subscription Management + Forums need upgrading
a) Go here: http://www.cakewalk.com/manager.aspx b) Enter your email address c) You are told "You do not currently have any Cakewalk subscriptions" d) Go here: http://www.cakewalk.com/newsletter.aspx e) Enter detail and submit. Now check the details By repeating steps. I find that step (c) is reproducable each time and you can go around and around in a loop repeating these steps. Also at no stage am I receiving any confirmation email in my inbox or my spam folder. Cheers Alex p.s. When will they update this ruddy forums software from ASPPlayground.NET to 3.9? Maybe never I suspect or maybe they are waiting for when they get hacked before they do something (Cake are you listening???), there are some serious security issues with the version I am posting on). More info: http://www.aspplayground.net/download.aspx

I would suggest you give the technical support folks a call. They have done things over the phone for me with registrations and such. Maybe for whatever reason they just need to tweak something in their system, or can otherwise manually get you squared away. 1 PM - 6 PM Eastern Time Monday through Friday 617.423.9021 (Boston) 323.370.6701 (Los Angeles) Email Tech Support PS - I don't think they are likely to change their forum. Perhaps they will take your advice under consideration, but I doubt it in this case. Sooooo, call tech support on Monday. Bob Bone

Andrew Rossa Cakewalk administrator is working this issue. He has stated if you PM him your email address he will sort it out. (lets hope so) "For those customers having an issue receiving emails, please send me a PM with your email address and I will try to sort it out. " This is from "New SONAR X2 Producer Content Club" the Sticky at the head of this forum. Message #39 Hope this helps.

Am I the only one who feels both priviledged and lucky?.. after all, Cake can certainly fix this forum..they can take the site down and be like most other manufacturers..blissfully unaware that users exist... So if the OP doesnt like the color shading and doesnt want to post here i seriously doubt that he will be missed.

I just KNEW there was some more rant left in you. Could someone do that - for sure. Is it likely - dunno - don't think so. Shouldn't you be off in a bunker somewhere, waiting for Dec 21? Kidding kidding kidding In all likelihood, the forum will not rise above 'get to it later, if at all' in the grand scheme of what gets fixed. It is, what it is. That does not take away any validity to your points - it is just not likely to change. Bob Bone

I changed my address (not the login???) address last year. And stopped getting promotions. Finally, in June, sent a message to customer service via the support page. (Which does not have a link to the general customer support form. ) Next week I got messages to 3 addresses: the oldest one (in the beginning), the old store one, and the new one. And then nothing again. So about 4 weeks ago I sent another message, and the next day I get messages to all 3 addresses. And nothing since. The renewal price of Sonar for the past 2 versions should have been increased by about $15 so CW could hire a couple of dudes that ONLY work on the website and forum, and user communications. Just tested again: searching for my username gives results that are 3 months and older. The Forum software publisher told me this is because the indexes are not updated frequently enough. And the most recent post to the "Announcements" section on the forum's landing page is from a year ago. The main CW managers do not understand that the forum is the company's most valuable asset. Most companies to do not get this. The forum should also include a listing of ALL user groups, and contact info, and ability to list ones' info. The website should be easier to use. And have recent news, not 4+ month old stuff on the front page. At least one person in the company should ONLY have the website/forum to be their main gig. Instead of this "Oh yeah, has anyone updated the web recently," behavior.

I DO agree with you that are some definite needs for ramping up the forum, and it is most definitely a CRITICAL avenue for the user community, and therefore the company, for self-help, thereby easing the load on the tech support staff. Think about how many more of us there are, and how many posts are resolved by having such a large pool of folks to draw from to either resolve through someone else having been through the same thing - here try this - seems to happen a LOT. So, yeah, the fact that searching the forum is better done through GOOGLE than by the search functionality within the forum is something that I agree sould get some attention. It's all a compromise - folks taken from one place mean a loss of productivity there while they are borrowed - but if it not done then what is the lost productivity from the folks who needed the other folks to get temporarily reassigned. And so on, and always will be, and will always cost some folks something in the process. Weighing that cost is the key. Bob Bone

Not quite sure what a cyber attack on the forum would garner the perpetrators. If it's just uploading viruses or malware... well that's what all my heavy duty AVs are for and why I avoid using this machine for anything important like online payments. Just seems like an odd target. Care to elaborate?

That's what I'm saying Alex. Sure they COULD do it but why? To access my PMs? Not much going on in there. Just a couple of chats and if it's going to delve into anything important I take the convo off site. My name/personal info? I don't provide that to web forums or pretty much anywhere on the net. Credit card info? I don't even think there is a place where you would do that here. In the Cake store sure but that seems to be a completely different site/server with proper security and even then if I wanted actually buy something from the Cake store I'd use Paypal. Don't get me wrong I am ultra paranoid about that kind of stuff but I just don't think this site is a worthwhile target and even if someone DID bother I doubt they'd get much. As always the general rules of safe intarwebbing apply. Don't provide personal info. Don't say or divulge anything you don't want the whole world to know. Use quality, updated AV software and don't click willy nilly on every link you see. There are no guarantees of 100% safety in this world but you can reduce risk. However you have to make a choice. How much are you willing to miss out on in life for the sake of safety. This forum is worthwhile and IMO is likely a low risk activity therefore I will continue to use it. That said yes they do indeed need to start from scratch. I was told that the problem would be moving all the archived data to a new server. People do this all the time so I'm not sure why it's such a big deal but if they don't want to do that I'd suggest a workaround. Set up the new site and close the old site for comments but leave it online. Then if people want to carry on an old discussion they can point to the original thread so everyone can get caught up and continue the discussion on the new site. Not ideal but this site will eventually become completely defunct as technology moves forward. Just a thought... well a lot of thoughts... but hey, I'm a ramblin' man. ;-)

In regards to the forums software only... Just because you may not think this is an issue for yourself, you shouldn't assume it's the same for other people. You can be sure plenty of people will not want to their passwords exposed. There's also a possibility accounts could be hijacked. I'm not saying this is the actualy case with ASPPlayground 3.5, but it very possibly could be. Cross site scripting vunerabilities are NOT GOOD. And no your antivirus will do nothing in this instance, the software is running on THEIR server, not your PC (I hope they have a virus scanner on their server though ;). All Cake needs to do is upgrade from 3.5 to 3.9 plus install service packs and patches etc. They then need to build in a policy of checking the ASPPlayground.Net every month or so to make sure there are no other little surprises. NB I'm sure it's not a big issue to change the colours if that became a priority for some reason. No they do not need to start from scratch, but if they did I recommend upgrading the whole internet infrustructure to DotNetNuke (and they can give me a call because that is what I do).

Alex and I are on the same page here. The forum software needs to be upgraded or fixed or whatever it needs. Its not just bad for posting its also bad for reading those posts that are unformatted. This post was done in FF16 and the forum offers no features at all. BTW it was formatted when it was written.

Wrong analogy If somebody broke into your home, your oven, toaster and refrigerator are exposed. Cross site scripting can access a database server through a web application (i.e. forums software) which can in turn COULD access other data (depending on how it is set up). This is a back door route. Either way they could get peoples passwords which could be used elsewhere, and you just don't let that happen because database servers have their own security vunerabilities anyway, so you make sure they get nowhere near access the database's tables. THAT IS SERIOUS. Said all I need to say but no doubt I'll be bouncing the thread every now and then until somebody from Cake finally takes notice.

Agreed John :). That is a pain in the arse plus it takes forever sometimes for the page to perform a postback upon submission of a post.

If someone can figure out how to come through my toaster into my bank account I will shake their hand in amazement. Look I have 38 years in IT, I get it - always have. Your point valid - a couple of us indicated that. 1) The control of the forum is not something any of us control. You have passed on your concerns to Cakewalk 2) I do not happen to agree with you whatsoever on the likelihood of this particular forum containing anything of any particular value to anyone outside of this forum. 3) If one or many people posting in a public forum are using the same user names and passwords here that they use to access their sensitive and/or financial data from other sites, then they are pretty much deserving to reap the consequences of that ignorance in this day and age. That would be essentially like someone having an ultra-secure system with their password written on a post-it note stuck to their monitor, or someone leaving a note taped on the door telling the neighborhood teenager where they left the keys to the house while they are gone on vacation, so they can water the petunias. 4) Get over it or don't - I'm still tapping my foot while humming Ramblin Man, the forum is what it is, and people are who they are. 5) I bet you my blender that you can't get through my toaster and into my oven, even if you DO hijack my refrigerator!
