Pentagon and PsynII and some other things won't load [SOLVED]
I just did a clean install with Windows 8, and this is my first time going 64-bit, so that might be the problem. Will Pentagon and PsynII and other 32-bit apps not run in a 64-bit environment? When I was installing X2, for several plugins and synths, it was unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 fail with exit code Ox3. I had to hit ignore to keep the installation going. These plugins and synth don't show up in X2 now, and songs I've used them in, of course won't play correctly. Anyone know what the problem is here? Thanks. Mark

Don't have Win8 but I am guessing it is a permissions issue. Did you run the installer as administrator? If not try a custom install as administrator. The work in 64bit SONAR on Win7.

Google and this site have many threads referencing this error not specific to Win8 though I do not think that matters. Here is an example http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=1821216 FYI PSYNII also runs in SONAR x2 64bit on Win7 I just loaded it up to make sure.

I was having trouble running one of these synths (can't remember which one) on Win 7 with X2 (worked fine in X1). I now run X2 with admin privileges and can run both synths. I just checked again now that I have Windows 8 installed and they both come up fine. I did not try to go back to non-admin and try.

I had problems with a few VSTs, including these two. I now set X1 and X2 to always open as administrator, and everything works fine.

If you right click on Sonar and select properties, then the Compatibility tab , and check "Run this program as an adminisrator", then it will always open like this.

Glyn Barnes There is a 64 bit version of Pentagon, not sure about PsynII Really? I was not able to find one.....but that does not mean a whole lot.......if you have a link that you could provide that would be cool.....cause I would much prefer to run 64 bit than a bridged version....... But I did get mine to work by using jBridge. Thanks Clifford

The 64 bit Pentagon has been around for a while. I think it just installs when you Install X2. But I don't have a clean install of X2 so it may have come from an earlier version of Sonar. (8.5)

Thanks for the tips, but I don't think these plugins and synths even installed, as they are not showing up in my plugins list. So I guess I'll need to try to do a custom install as administrator. How exactly would that work? I'm not at home now, so I can't experiment. Do I just right click on Part 1 of the installation downloads and select run as administrator? Thanks. Mark

Yeah... when you start the install process there will be an option for Custom Install. I forget but you might have to click through a couple install wizard screens to get to it. And yes... even though I am always logged on as administrator on my system I've still had to Run As Administrator for a few programs to install correctly. I just do that by default now to avoid the issue when it arises. Saves time. Be aware though X2 is not yet fully patched for Win 8 so you may encounter problems in that regard. Cheers.

UPDATE: PARTIALLY SOLVED. Hate to double post this, but for those searching for answers with similar problems, it might help them, plus, I could use some suggestions for getting this to fully work. I never got a response from Cakewalk on how to fix this, but after some more research I decided to completely uninstall X2 (using the method at the bottom of this post) and reinstall as administrator, instead of reinstalling as administrator over the top of the previous install. This time Pentagon and PSYN II installed without the "Unable to register the DLL/OCX" error; however, even after opening X2 as administrator, the plugins don't work. My MIDI track that feeds the synth is lighting up on the meter, but nothing comes out of the synths. Other synths (Z3TA) are working fine. Any suggestions? For those experiencing the same install problem, here are the instructions I found for a clean install of Sonar: a) Completely un-install SONAR from your computer. This is normally done from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. This will not remove any of your files or audio data. b) To make sure nothing else is running while reinstalling SONAR in step 'e', choose Start | Run and type MSCONFIG. Click OK, choose Selective Startup, then uncheck the Load Startup Group Items box. Click OK, and restart Windows. You can always recheck that box at a later time. In Win 2000/XP, click Ctrl+Alt+Del and manually End Task on the items you don't need running. Restart your computer. c) Click the Windows Start button and select Run. At the prompt type REGEDIT and click OK. Backup your Registry before making edits - you do this by clicking the Registry menu, Export Registry File. Now delete the following Registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software Please note that this will remove any effects presets and key bindings you may have made in Cakewalk. You can back up those registry keys separately if you like. d) Delete the files AUD.INI and TTSSEQ.INI from the SONAR program folder. (For this step, I had to SEARCH my C drive for these files. You might have to set your computer to view hidden files ... not sure.) e) Restart your computer, then reinstall SONAR.

Another UPDATE: Thinking it might be the whole 64-bit Sonar environment causing the problem, I installed the 32-bit X2, and I still get no sound from these Pentagon I, PSYN II, TTS, etc. Any ideas? Do I just have to go back to a 32-bit Windows environment to get my song back that I was in the middle of producing? Thanks. Mark

I am considered an administrator when I log in. So that shouldn't be it. WRONG! You still have to right click and select Run as Administrator. Pentagon and Psyn both work in X2 with Windows 7 or 8 64-bit. Its a weird-ass Windows quirk that we all went through a year or so ago.

Daveny5, I am doing as you say to do, and they still produce no sound. I can load them up in my synth rack, double click on them and open them up, and I can get midi input showing up in the meters, but no output on any DXi synths. I tried Z3TA, and it works fine. I called tech support just now, and they are befuddled. I'm doomed. Mark

I don't think you can use the DXi version of Pentagon in 64-bit Windows. Use the VST version. I believe you can use the DXi version of PSYN II though. I tried both of mine under Windows 8 just now and they both work. Make sure you have a MIDI track with the output set to the softsynth you want to use, select the MIDI track, and make sure Input Echo is on. You can have both 32-bit and 64-bit Sonar installed at the same time so you don't need to go back.

SOLVED (With no understanding of why) The first thing I did when I installed Win8-64-bit and then X2 64-bit was to open my latest project, which used these DXi synths in question. All the settings were correct, as far as MIDI output being directed to the synths, etc. No matter what I tried with latency settings, etc., they would not work. So, I decided to try creating a new instance of the synths in the same project, and voila, they work. All the settings are the same, but the original ones still don't work. So, problem solved, but I have no explanation of why. Now if I can just get the dropouts from stopping when my buffers are set low. I have to bump them way up to like 1024 to prevent popping and constant dropouts. But won't that create ridiculous latencies when trying to record a synth or something in real time? Thanks for all the help here. Mark

daveny5 I don't think you can use the DXi version of Pentagon in 64-bit Windows. . You can. There is a 64 Bit DXi that works fine except for some issues in the simulator section. Infact only the DXi version is installed with a standard install of X2. I have a Suspicion that the VST is only available if Pentagon is purchased separately.
