Is it possible to color coordinate things?
Hi all... Was wondering if you can change track strip colors so you can coordinate like tracks. Say, if you have a drum folder with drum tracks in it, is there a way to make the actual strips themselves have a different background color? I know you can make the track itself have different background and foreground colors but, if I'm working in the mix window, it would be nice to be able to group things by color. Or some other means of organization.

The color options in X2 are somewhat limited but go to Edit > Preferences > Customization - Colors in Sonar and poke around. The settings there are detailed on page 93 of the PDF manual. Cheers.

It is indeed. It is also very repetitive and filled with errors and broken features. I'd suggest picking up X2 Power when it comes out instead of going through the pain I am of reading the actual manual cover to cover. I however am a glutton for punishment. ;-)

The Rush fan above (heh) echoed something even better than what I could have described. I would LOVE to be able to color-coordinate tracks! Even more so, Take Lanes!!! YES!! btw, I met Nick Raskulinecz, recently at Blackbird Studio in Nashville. Really nice guy.

Also be sure to watch some of the Sonar University vids http://www.cakewalk.com/CakeTV/SONARU.aspx and the Sonar webinars http://www.cakewalk.com/CakeTV/Live.aspx If you own X2 you should also have a free month pass to Groove3.com in your Cakewalk store account which has a ton more videos. If you haven't already redeemed that pass do so quickly because it expires at the end of this month. Cheers.

Beepster, did you bother to list any of the errata in the manual along the way? I started to, but after the first couple of chapters I'd already made a huge list and figured why should I waste my time with this? It was going to take me 2 years to read the whole thing at that rate. And then I thought, am I really doing myself any good reading a manual full of mistakes and inaccuracies? At that point, I decided videos were the way to go. Kudos for actually reading the thing, you have a more dedicated mind than me for picking the good stuff out of that mess!

There is a member here named Panup that put a lot of time in to a utility he wrote that allows you to customize how Sonar looks way beyond what Sonar itself alone will allow. You can download his mods here ... LINK

Hi, sharke. I've been making elaborate notes for my personal use as I test everything out along the way and when I find something broken I'll detail the problem and any workarounds I can figure out for it. I was considering compiling a list to send to Cake but I, as you, do not have the time or inclination for it so they remain as little footnotes. I'd love to help them out but there is just too many things broken and too many errors in the text. If there were some kind of monetary or discount incentives for me to do it I might but just doing things as I am is grueling and mind numbing enough as it is. Besides I'm still working with build 308 as I don't want to introduce any of the new problems to my install so a lot would be duplication of certain things that have been fixed with the patch and the rest probably dismissed because... well I haven't installed the patch. I have confirmed many broken items with folks here who do have the patch installed. IDK... my benevolence does have its limits. Maybe next go around. I really need to focus on my own crap for a while. Cheers. I hope you've been well.

Trust me, I'm eyeballing the groove3 videos. I've already purchased some of there other non Sonar videos. So, yeah, I plan on watching them as soon as I can. Thanks for the tip about digifreq and the cake links.

Guess I'm going to have to wait until my full paid version gets here. I tried to run duckbar, didn't find sonar so I had t open the config file for duckbar. Was able to change the settings needed to get it to run, but there were some things that duckbar was still failing on. Must not like the directory structure for the demo version.

When I was reading the manual I got the distinct impression that it had been hastily thrown together from earlier versions of the manual and that they weren't too careful about checking how much of that text still applied to X2. I hope they release an updated manual at some point; I mean like most people I'm probably going to end up with a copy of X2 Power! but when all is said and done it's always good to have a copy of the official manual lying around for reference.

Duckbar is never tested with SONAR demo version and it will not start without manual tweaking to config file (not difficult, though). X1 b,c,d, X2, X2a Producer and versions (64 and 32 bit) are at the 'safe zone'. Studio versions should work, too.

Thanks panup. I got it to run but as mentioned, there were some issues. No big deal. I was able to manually edit the config file. So you developed this in .net eh? I'm assuming that Sonar was developed in C++? I've not coded in C++ in 16 years. Been mostly .net for me.

Yes, Duckbar is .net, but I have used a lot of Win32 API calls, too. SONAR is C++.

I'm guessing your GUI for Duckbar is all .net but your calls into cakewalk is where you're calling the Win32 api?

Yes, communication with SONAR is almost all done using API calls. Duckbar GUI is all .net.

Yes! Being able to colour (color?) code the tracks would be GREAT!!! That is one thing that Avid and Steinberg (and probably others) have done very correctly in their products. I'd love to see that in Sonar if it's possible to implement. When working with 100+ tracks it tends to be a lot of squinting on the track names.

One way to find out what colours can be changed is to go into preferences > colours (or wherever it is), use the "select all" (or whatever it's called) and set everything to something ridiculous like shocking pink. You'll see immediately what can be changed and what can't. (Save your project before you do this, then close it without saving [unless you pink of course ])

Icons are good but takes too much time to set up unless you're only using track templates and they steal screen real estate. Colour coding is better.
