Synthesis/HiHat
i would like to be able to stretch a hihat sample to different lengths. or a cool synthesized hi hat would do for me just as well. i want the hi hat to be open and then close, so essentially i want to change the amount of time before the hi hat closes. any ideas greatly appreciated. have a good one 3Eo

Try this free vsti called Drumatic 3. Great synthesised drum sounds and lots of knobs to twiddle to alter the sounds. It might give you the sound you're after. I love it. http://www.e-phonic.com/vstplugins/drumatic_3.html

I feel like I might be missing something in your question, Bryan, but here's one solution, as I read it. When I think of opening/closing hi-hats, the choke groups in something like the Velocity synth come to mind. I might approach the solution by mangling one of the .wavs that come with the kits in P5 by running through the DS864's Pitch EG and filters, then recording & exporting the results as a .wav file. You might start with the original open hi-hat sound, or even a cymbal, for resynthesis in the DS864, and choke it off with a modified version of the closed hit-hat .wav drowning in FX [like the Spectral Transformer]. Reload both samples in a custom drum kit. That way, you could vary the length of the first sample's note length in P-Seq by the placement of the second sample, and still retain the basic envelope signature of the original sounds. The real trick would be to come up with a method of varying the "closed-ness" of second sample (perhaps with multiple closed samples?), to emulate what happens with a "real" hi-hat. Or perhaps you're looking to create a completely unique sustained tone that replaces an open hi-hat in practice. How about a slowed-down metal trash can lid? If you clamp down on it, you can derive the closed hi-hat from it, as well. I've got a Tibetan Singing Bowl here that would be perfect as a raw sample for manipulation. That sucker will sustain forever! With just the right amount of EQ and compression ...

b rock, in my ventures to synthesize my own hihat sound in Albino 2 i was able to do some nice contortion by inverting the filter envelope. this approach was not what i was looking for but it did give me a new and useful sound. i was thinking i might have to do something like use the two sounds but i doubt i would have thought about using the choke group. The real trick would be to come up with a method of varying the "closed-ness" of second sample (perhaps with multiple closed samples?), to emulate what happens with a "real" hi-hat. i don't think i will need that much variation in the closed sound. the variation would come from the different lengths of the open hat (rhythmically). if do i need the variation i'll use the filter or pitch parameters in Velocity. i downloaded blipps suggestion and i'll give both suggestions a whirl today and let you guys know what i came up w/.\ have a good one 3Eo

ok, here's how everything turned out. my synthesis effort left a lot to be desired. i was able to create some cool and useful sound fx but i wasn't able to achieve the fx i was looking for. i turned my efforts to samples and began the mangling. i took an open hihat sample and stretched it 100% in Sonar. after normalizing i faded in the sample to get rid of the clangy transient. slapped a t-Racks compressor on it and maxed it out to phatten the signal and increase the release time. i pulled out the lexicon pantheon- which i hardly use - and placed a big wide vocal preset on it. i turned up the diffusion and did some other tweekin', reversed the order of the compressor and the reverb added a linear fade and bounced it down to a mono track. i then put the mangled sample back into Battery 2 and turned the bits down to 8 and tuned the sample up 2 semitones. i think? i'm not sure of the default tune in battery. my final step was to put it in a choke group w/a closed hihat. i got about 85% of the sound i was looking for and it is completely functional for the purpose it was intended for. that's my story and i'm stickin' to it. have a good one 3Eo
