hi all,

how many of us use the full ns_kit7?

It would be great to swap presets and even sonar projects with a ns_kit setup.

I would love to see how others are using it, how you route them, how you use the buses etc.

kind regards

Joni

Their message board gives me the impression that you need Halion or Kontakt to use ns_kit7. Is that right?

yes, hal3 has instruments FXPs, plus some drum-kit FXBs, kontakt just has instrument presets no multis (that i could find)... i use the hal player... i haven't done anything particularly useful with presets myself

Hi vance-

I could swear I used it (at least the ns_kit7free) with both DR-008 and VSampler once upon a time, but I can't check right now. Will do later if no one else chimes in.

This is correct (...at least from what I've read too); to use the full version of the ns_kit, you have to use Halion or Kontact, as it has yet to been converted to another format such as the SF2 format used in the free version. I use the NS_KIT7_Free kit with the sfz soundfont player and session drummer to program drum patterns.

You need those progs to use the presets provided... my samples came in wav format. It is very extensive though.I've used them in Dr-008 and they work fine. I also bought Halion player just for the purpose of using the presets. and frankly i'd rather assemble my own after hearing them... but there are a LOT of files to sort through. The pre sets for the hats are great in Halion I must say using the mod wheel to emulate open to closed hats works really well. I agree with susan the ns-7 free kit is a great sample set as well.

I like to grab me a couple of ns_kit sounds every so often, when I want some nice live cymbealcrashes, open hihats. woodblocks etc.. Works well with my dr-008 for sure..

I use the free WAV file version, and load the wavs into Cyclone to trigger them. Today I just downloaded the free 200+meg sfz version.

Is there a way to pan the toms, cymbals etc., around left and right with the sfz one? I use the sfz player that comes with Sonar Studio 5.

I have the full ns_kit7, but I'm too stupid and lazy to make good use of it, as it seems to drain too much resources from my antiquated computer. So I've been loading the free version in Kontakt 2 because it's lightweight, fast, and easy to use.

Incidentally, I have the same issue with LPC, so I'm keeping both of these programs on ice until I get a PC upgrade. But I, too, would be interested in hearing what full NS users are doing with it with Kontakt running as a VST in Sonar.

I have the full version with Halion Player. I tend to mix down what I'm working on in Sonar and then construct the drum track in Project5, it's a little easier on the CPU consumption. When I'm happy with it, I'll pop the bounced audio tracks into sonar. Probably not the most effecient way, but it works for me.

When using sfz format w/DimPro if you want to modify the parameters you have to open the sfz in Notepad. Fear not, it's easier than cheez wiz and the changes occur in realtime (i.e., you can leave the sfz notepad file open and work away).

have a good one

Kontakt 2 presets should be in a user area, if you are a registered customer to the full kit.

About battery and other samplers, there are so much in the full kit, it's just not doable to use full kit mappings in any sample player. It needs to support disk streaming for one thing.

Using the waves, yes you can make you own mappings, but it pretty much means you do not value your time spent very much. It's a huge task.

I have the NS_kit7 Full. I've put a scaled down version of the rock kit together in VSampler. It works great! If anyone would like the vs3 file just PM me and I'd be happy to email it to you. The kit sets very well in a mix.

What I do is create my drum pattern using session drummer and then tweak it to taste. I then run the "split note to tracks" .cal routine (or something like that), which splits the individual midi instruments, or drum kit components in this case, to separate tracks. Then I can set up the panning and such exactly as I need it to be for each of the various parts of the kit. I also usually create individual audio tracks for each of the drum kit components, as I can then create a drum submix just like a real drum kit.

If you search the forum, you should be able to find the step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

Hope this helps.

I have been using the ns_kit with battery for a couple of years with absolutely no problems. I personally think it's the best drum set i've heard.
I need to get the full kit soon but the free kit has been amazing for me so far!

If you have the ns_kit7 free kit downloaded on your computer, Just use the "add kit" function in Battery. That's the way I do it. It then populates the cells with the samples with different velocities.

The other way to do it is to enter each sample individually in the cells to your requirements and then save it as a kit. You only have to set it up once and load it everytime you use Battery.
I also customise a drum map to use with the battery kit which makes programming the drums very easy in the piano roll.

Take the GIG-file for nskit7-free instead, and just import it into Battery. I think it imports Gigaformat.
