6.2.1 won't run because of MS failure
When I installed the 6.2.1 patch I got an error that the Miscrosoft redistributable could not be installed/configured. As a result it looks as if the SONAR 6.2.1 install failed. Now I cannot run SONAR. =:-( HELP !!! thanks. thorne The exact error is with Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable. Apparently the install of that software is corrupted (Error 1714 - The older version cannot be removed). Then I get another error on /SONAR/Plugins/Shared Utilities/CW15Auto.dll... Unable to register the DLL/ICX: LoadLibrary failed: code 14001 (I choose to ignore this error) But SONAR 6.2 ran just fine. =:-(

Have you tried restoring back right before you did the update. CJ

I assume you tried running the install again? for 6.2.1? and if that doesn't work, for 6.2?

I assume you rebooted and tried again? If that didn't work, try renaming the old version before installing the new.

Noel said that the following: Attention Windows XP x64 Users: The Windows XP x64 32bit update is not yet available. Please check back frequently, as it will be released within the next week. was because of a windows installer problem. Does it apply to your setup.

If the redist install fails SONAR 6.2.1 definitely will not run. When are you getting this error? Is it immediately when the redist install starts or after awhile? You shouldn't abort that install manually by pressing cancel. Also what OS are you running? We haven't seen that failure - is it possible that something is corrupt on your system?

Noel - The error occurs during the 6.2.1 install immediately when the redist install starts (I assume). All I can do is press CANCEL on the redist error. On the CW15Auto.dll, I've tried IGNORE and RETRY and ABORt. No help. I am running Windows XP SP2 with all updates applied. It is VERY possible that something on my system is corrupt. I've been getting runtime failures on several Windows apps because the original install packages have been deleted. I don't care about running the Windows apps, but I care very much to get SONAR running again ! Is there a way I can reinstall just the VisualBasic redist? I'll look on Microsoft's web site. Looks like it's vcredist.msi that's corrupted/deleted. How can I uninstall the 6.2.1 update? xackley - I am not the Windows x64 case. dstrenz - I didn't try a reboot. I will. What do you mean by "rename the old version"? The old version of what? Jason - Yes I ran the install 3X and it always failed the same way. I will try reinstalling the 6.2 patch. CJ - By restoring I assume you mean the Windows restore to "last best known" config? I could try, but I'd be afraid of what else would get uninstalled.

Thats what i meant thorne. If all you did was do the update and you didnt install anything else, you have nothing to worry about. whats the worst that can happen, re-installing a program only takes a few min. most of the time. Go for it. CJ

CJ - Going back to "last good config" didn't help. dstrenz - Reboot didn't change anything. Jason - Reinstalling the 6.2 patch resulted in an install error that the correct version of SONAR could not be detected. I suppose I could start over from 6.0, but I'm wondering if that install will also fail because of the corrupted vcredist situation. I downloaded the latest vcredist.exe and exeuted, but that didn't help either. Sigh. thorne

One thing you can try to use to track down the source of your error with the CW15Auto.dll is a program called Dependency Walker. It gives you the ability to look inside DLLs and examine their dependencies. If that DLL is trying to call something that is missing, Dependency Walker will tell you. Once you know which file(s) are missing, this may help you determine what programs/drivers/dll's need fixing. It could also be useful for Noel and the Cake folks in their trouble-shooting of this problem. http://www.dependencywalker.com/ This program was invaluable in helping me troubleshoot issues I had after a failed install of Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 2 at work. (This Service Pack is huge, and doesn't query for sufficient disk space before install. When it runs out of space, it fails, tries to roll back, and does so miserably. It deleted a bunch of dll's relevant to the .Net Framework without removing references to these dll's. The end result was that I couldn't use anything Office, Visual Studio, or .NET for a day and a half. But I DID get it fixed (and long before our help desk had a clue!) I hope you're able to get this resolved. Peace,

Thanks, tunekicker. The missing files according to Dependency Walker are: MFC80U.DLL MSVCP80.DLL MSVCR80.DLL MSJAVA.DLL I can find these files in other directories on my boot drive, but I wouldn't know where to put them so SONAR can find them. I guess in my LIBPATH? thorne

tunekicker - Just about all the Microsoft Office stuff (Word, Excel, etc) fails to run. While cleaning up my computer, I accidentally deleted a directory called something like /temporaryInstallFiles on my boot drive which had about a dozen .msi files in it. That's when all the failures started to occur. However, SONAR 6.2 was still working flawlessly. Any other info that would be helpful? thanks, thorne

Have you tried reinstalling Office? If you have, and it works, it might help with your Cake problem. If you haven't, I would give it a try (even doing a selective install and only installing the minimum you need to test it, like Word and the common files.) Since you're having trouble with the re-distributable, my bet is that Office will fail to run after re-install, and you're experiencing something very similar to the failure I had to experience when Visual Studio Service Pack 2's setup crashed and burned. I might be able to help you troubleshoot it. Peace,

Don't worry about the rest of the install. That will definitely fail if the first part fails. One suggestion is to uninstall SONAR 6 completely and then start from square one. Reinstall 6.0 first. If that is successful it should reinstall the original redist and your other apps should work again. Then install 6.2 and finally 6.2.1 - hopefully that should work. Not sure what got corrupted to cause their installer to fail but I'll send MS a note to inquire.

It looks like you've got two problems, the first of which caused the second. The fact that MS Office doesn't run probably means you're missing some DLLs/files that MS programs expect to be present. This didn't affect SONAR (probably because it doesn't use them). However, the Visual Studio prog that the 6.2.1 update is using to update your DLLs does need it and so, when that failed, SONAR was broken too. I'm with tunekicker, if you get Office working and reinstall SONAR then the 6.2.1 update will probably work. If you don't, I suspect the same thing will happen. Brian

In particular, you're probably seeing this error when you open Office apps like Word: The application failed to initialize properly (0xo0150004). Click on OK to terminate the application. The way I eventually fixed my issue was outlined on this page: http://blogs.infosupport.com/marcelv/archive/2006/10/01/Visual-Studio-SP-installation-failed-due-to-disk-space-problems_2C00_-how-to-bring-VS.NET-alive-again.aspx I followed the lead of one of the guys who followed up in posting (details below.) After doing this and re-installing Visual Studio (and thus C ++), then .NET, then Office, I eventually got everything working again. All the best! Peace, Tunes "The problem is that when SP1 setup is doing rollback, it is not cleaning correctly the shared C runtime libraries. The Windows\WinSxS contains set of directories with the various shared installations. In addition there are directories named "Policies" and "Menifests". These directories contain files which are used to find out the correct version of a given library (DLL) to use with a specific application. The problem is that SP1 setup remove the shared C runtime (CRT) directory without removing the corresponding data in the Menifest and Policies directory. The result is that loading any software that try to use the version 8 of the C runtime library will fail doing so. To solve this issue you can do one of two things: 1. Create a directrory with the right name (or use the empty one if this is the case) and copy the runtime DLLs to there. Make sure that you copy the right versions otherwise most things will work, but some may not... or 2. Remove the orphan policy and menifest entries (that what I did)."

And the hits just keep on comin'... I uninstalled SONAR 6 and reinstalled it and now I get the same error toward the end of the install about CW15Auto.dll as in my original post. The install completes. I click on the SONAR icon, I get the splash window and then nothing, no SONAR entry in the Task List. I get no error entries in the Windows Event Manager for Applications. I do get these 3 System event errors when I run SONAR: 1) Generate Activation Context failed for C:\SONAR3\Plugins\Shared Utilities\CW15Auto.dll. Reference error message: The operation completed successfully. 2) Resolve Partial Assembly failed for Microsoft.VC80.CRT. Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your system. 3) Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT could not be found and Last Error was The referenced assembly is not installed on your system. Oh, I did get this error in the Windows Application event log during SONAR install: Product: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable -- Error 1714.The older version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. System Error 1612. Now what? thorne UPDATE - I was able to find a vcredist.msi and at least got the SONAR install to get past that point. However, SONAR still complains about the CW15Auto.dll.

I'm pretty well convinced the solution that helped me will help you. If you have a way to re-install Visual C ++, Visual Studio, or simply have another machine where things aren't broken, you should be able to fix this by deleting the mis-guided entries (anything referencing CRT) in C:\Windows\WinSxS\Manifest and C:\Windows\WinSxS\Policies, then re-installing C, VS, or copying the redist resources from your working machine to your broken one. Then Office, Sonar, and other programs dependent on this will be able to run. Peace,

Thanks, Tunes. The problem is that I never installed Visual C++ or Visual Studio on any of my machines. But I will follow your advice and copy the Microsoft.VC80.CRT* files/dirs (the one mentioned in my Event Log) from another machine. I'm hoping Noel will chime in with some other insights. I went ahead and installed the 2 SONAR6 patches and now I just get an error that SONARPDR.EXE cannot run, bad configuration. thorne

Not sure, but this might help you find what you need to copy: "...you can also install the VC redistributable from another machine where SP1 applied successfully. You can find this under the directory BootStrapper\Packages wherever the .NET Framework 2.0 SDK was installed, which by default is under the Visual Studio 2005 installation root. " http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2007/02/05/visual-studio-2005-service-pack-1-rollback-breaks-some-applications.aspx I know you haven't installed Visual Studio, but I think whatever initially caused your failure is doing so through the same means as the failed install I had. Thus, all of the references to dll's in the VC redistributable. Hope this helps. Peace,

Thorne, If I were you I would just reformat the hard drive and go with a clean install with MS. If you are having trouble with other software besides Sonar than something is wrong with MS. I had the same problem when I tried Sonar4 demo. It would not let me get in on regular mode but in safe mode it would work. Plus that was at the same time sp2 came out from MS and I couldn't install that either because I had accendently deleted a windows folder and the recycle bin wouldn't delte it completely or restore it to its proper spot.

Thorne, No offense really, but you could be chasing your own tail on this for days. Time to reformat. Before you do this, read the recent thread here about backup imaging programs. Yours is a perfect example why $35 for Acronis' True Image is a hard deal to beat. There's absolutely no excuse for any DAW owner not to have such a utility. Just today, I used Ghost at work to restore a user's system to previous condition in about ten minutes. Woulda taken me at least four hours (minimum) to reinstall it all manually. I know it's not what you wannna hear, but this could be your turning point, my friend. Good luck, JD

Sorry about your troubles with this. I forwarded the errors you got to Microsoft but I suspect it will be next week before I hear back. Not all companies talk to customers on weekends you know ;-) Regarding upgrading to Vista. If you are doing an upgrade install its hard to say but you could end up with the same problem after the upgrade since the files are already there. I'm sure this problem will be solveable but MS would be best to try and provide a solution to repair the corrupted side by side configuration. You could try contacting Microsoft directly in case someone can help you over the phone...
