we drift apart

Hi,

Been working away from home for quite awhile and had this melody stuck in my head. I'm back now so I tried to turn it into a song.

Not really country but it is a steel guitar tune...consider yourself warned

If you've got a few minutes, check out here: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11718821

And if you've got more than a few minutes all comments, suggestions and/or criticisms are welcome.

**6/24 - In response to several comments about the snare and/or kick drum levels, I've raised the volume on both.

It sounds like a hymn, and that is meant in a good way. The steel guitar is the one instrument I will learn to play if I learn another, I really love it. Than and maybe the bajno :-) We all need to catch up to Scotty.

Gary, you are one of my favorite musicians on this forum, and this is an excellent example of why...

Great work, but this needs some vocals to it. I kept waiting to hear then but they never came into play. Very nice instrumentally and a lovely steel guitar sound. Enjoyed. Blessings, John

Wonderful tone and phrasing Gary, that's some really lovely playing. I like the little bell sounds accenting the high end, nice touch. The tune had a Mark Knopfler vibe about it, very bitter-sweet.

Not really my thing, but I ignored the warning though 'cos I know by now that  a geeare tune means I'm about to hear someone who really knows what they're doing. This is no exception, though it did feel like more of a bed for vocals than an instrumental in it's own right. Maybe just me.

Way cool Mr. Gary. I was enthralled with the steel and the tune. Is the steel a new toy? The mix/production leaves me a little wanting though. You know I'm a big fan, but this just makes me want to fix it somehow:)
I don't know how off the top of my head but, I think the meeting of real infused with computer is the problem. And, that's a tough one to get over. I do love it though. Did I say that?.....:)

Scotttunes: Hi Scotty, how are you? It's great to hear from you. Thanks for checking the tune. Glad you liked it.

thomas1234567890: Hi Thomas. Thanks for listening and for the kind words. Much appreciated.

The Band19: Hi Robbie...that IS you, right? Thanks very much for listening and commenting. I'm totally flattered that I would be among your favorite forum musicians...Thanks! You should go ahead, take the plunge and get a steel guitar...but, sadly, I don't think any of us will catch up with Scotty

foxwolfen: Hi, thanks very much for the listen and the positive  comments!

    theguitarplayer:
this needs some vocals to it. I kept waiting to hear then but they never came into play.
Hi John, believe me, if I started singing you would be counting the seconds until it stopped  Thanks for listening and taking the time to leave a comment. Glad you enjoyed the tune.

james1213: Hi James, how are you? Thanks so much for the tone/phrasing comments and I'll take any comparison to Knopfler any day. Also, glad you mentioned the bell sounds 'cause I was kinda wondering if they were really annoying or not. Thanks again!

notnat: Hi Frank, hope all is well with you. Thanks for checking out the tune and for the kind words. When I first started working on this, the drums, bass and electric guitars were much more aggressive. At some point I cleaned up the guitars and dialed back the drums and bass...might gone a little too far with the drums. I appreciate the tip and will definitely look into the drum volume. Thanks for the ears!

    Hey Gary
Glad to see and hear your doing OK!  WOW... the arrangement on this piece is just fantastic as is the mix/performance.  I don't know why but this piece made me think of the movie "Urban Cowboy".  Your playing/vibe is as smooth as Buddy Emmons.  KUDOS!

yea, I understand what you're saying. Although, to me it sounds more like 90 seconds of music stretched out into a 4 1/2 minute song...as you said, this is not your thing, so I appreciate your open-mindedness in giving it a listen. And finally...great job on your latest tune "Making History". Thanks!

philz: Hi Phil, how have you been? Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate the listen and I'm glad you liked the tune.

timidi: Hi Tim. Thanks for listening and commenting. Glad you ( mostly ) liked it. If you come up with any specific suggestion please let me know...The steel isn't new, by the way, I just don't play it much anymore. There are just too many strings to tune and I'm pretty lazy...loved your take on "Tequila ( Busch lite ) Sunrise". Thanks again!

Gary, you are so great.  You told me once you were not a very good steel player.  This was absolutely how a steel should sound.  The whole recording is up to your A+ standards!  I know that I have to finish my "country song" before you forget how to play that thing!  LOL!  You have inspired me.

Fantastic playing and tone, well textured instrumentation and arrangement, and I definitely agree with James and Thomas about this being a totally "perfect" mix.

Hey Garry, nice guitar playing, really nice.  I've always wanted to play lap steel.

The mix is really tight.  The melody reminds me slighty of New Girl In Town by The Eagles but hey that's a compliment.

Not really my sort of music, I'm not a country boy but I can appreciate the skill.

My last days on the road I played steel about half the night.  It's been a long time

Very pretty.  I love steel.  I still have a lot Buddy Emmons tunes.

Some vocals would set on this very nicely.

So happy to seem some new stuff from you Gary.

Rikkie: Hi Rik. Always great to hear from you. I hadn't really thought about it but I think your right...it does sound kind of Hawaiian-ish. Which is fine by me! Thanks for checking it out. Glad you liked it.

spacealf: Hi, thanks for stopping by the ol' homestead and taking the time to listen and leave a comment. I appreciate the positive comments.

bapu: Hi Ed. Thanks for listening and commenting. Vox? hmm, if they can put a man on the moon I suppose it's possible to put vocals on this...who knows?  Thanks again, glad you liked the tune.

Janet: Hi Janet. How are you? Thanks for dropping by and thanks very much for the kind words and for mentioning my piano noodling

evadianepug: Warren! How are you, man? You are too kind, my friend. Let me know when you finish that country song...it would be a pleasure to collab with you again.

Bob Oister: Hi Bob. Thanks very much for checking out the tune and for the compliments on the arrangement and mix...much appreciated! Congrats on the release of your CD and great job on the 'Hearts On Fire' video.

Man, you should get one! You can find them really cheap and it's not too difficult to play. Anyway, thanks very much for taking the time to listen and leave a comment. I appreciate the kind words and I'm not a country boy, either

Warrenlee: Hi Lee. Thanks for listening/commenting...especially when it's not a genre you like or are interested in. It's always great to hear from open-minded musicians! Thanks again.

darylcrowley: Hey Daryl! How are ya? Great to hear from you, buddy. Yea, the last band I worked with I played nothing but steel...I worked at it pretty hard for awhile but it's always been a struggle  That's how I wound up in Nashville, though...last place on earth I ever thought I'd live, haha! Thanks for the listen and the kind words. I noticed that you just posted a new song so I've gotta go check it out.

This was sweet man. The phrasing was spot on for me. Just those little hesitations in the bends and slides.
