what resolution / size monitor do I really need

I have LG 1952 19 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor, 1440X900 WXGA+, 10000:1, 2ms running at max resolution (1440 x 900) ...... BUT ....... that doesn't seem to be sufficient.  Am I facing down having to replace this monitor in order to have a work environment that is workable?  Workable work environment.  If so, shouldn't that little teensy detail be provided up front before I hopped to X1 from 8.5?

I you can afford it, get two 23" or 24" LCD 1920 x 1080 full HD displays.

Or at least one. It makes life so much easier, and X1 looks fantastic on them. I just bought two because of X1.

You could always keep the 19" and get another larger one. But I highly recommend getting full HD resolution (1920 x 1080)

You can't blame Cakewalk for the size of monitor you use! A 19" widescreen monitor is too narrow for anything sensible (IMHO) - I have a 22" (bought for X1) and I was shocked by how squishy things are! I also have my 19" "square" monitor next to the new one and between them I can set things up rather nicely.

2 X 24" would be the way to go though!!!

ok, by "squishy" you mean "neato keano oh yeah" or "everything is all smashed together in a glob"?  So that is a 22 inch widescreen running at 1920x1080?

Ouch!  That hurt.  I talked to my wife and daughter to see if they were willing to get back out on the streets, but apparently all that got me was having to sleep in the car tonight.  Nobody gets a joke anymore.

I would like to know if I went up to Staples and bought their 22 inch widescreen running at 1920x1080 that I would happy or sad?  Would I be able to see the whole ProChannel docked?  I am looking at the low end of things to "get by" so to speak.

You will be able to see the full Pro Channel with any size 1920 x 1080 screen. It will just be really small or really big depending on the size. I would go at least 23" though, preferably 24"

No you are a musician.  Or in your case a naicisum.

Seriously, I am having to get a new roof here in Florida.  so money is wee bit tight.  Just need to know the minimum I can function in, which apparently is not my 19" widescreen running at 1440x900.

    As long as it's 1920 x 1080, a 22" will be fine.

You can see how many people have which size screen with X1 here in my X1 Poll. That question in near the bottom of the list.

22" is the most popular size in the poll.

After my new PC was built back in October I went to Walmart and bought 2 HP 23" (1920 x 1080 )monitors for a little over $500.00. I could've bought them for less online (or went with a different brand) but I really like HP and I didn't want to wait. Depending on the brand Tiger Direct has some decent 23" monitors for a good price.

    Good luck...

I'm running 1920 X 1080. By squishy I meant that things are a bit smaller than I anticipated - it is nicer to work with the font size that my 19" monitor delivers - but I can't stand in the way of progress!

I've been running 2, 22" Samsung SyncMaster 206BW monitors since Sonar 6 or 7 at 1680/1050, and everything is crystal clear and sharp! Brilliant color too I might add! I am using a PNY  Nivida GeForce 9800 GT (1024MB DDR3) video card.

Im not an expert, but a good graphics card upgrade may help you get it where you'd like, but obviously your screen needs to be able to work with the resolutions you set.  A graphics card would also be cheaper than a new monitor! I understand being on a budget! LOL
    Good luck!

OK so I went out and bought a 23inch widescreen 1098 hidef monitor.  am still having problems.  Why does the ProChannel show up correctly in one song; but in the other song its all goofy?  I have restarted, tried all sorts of stuff, but the meter just isn't there?

I'm running Twin HP 2310M monitors at 1920x1080 and everything is STILL minuscule.
I upped the DPI to 137 percent and now it's much better but still, how do you people see the marks on knobs and so forth?

    Sonar is not alone BTW.
    Protools 9 is even worse.
The transport punch in/loop time is almost impossible to read.
    Reaper is decent.
Presonous is better than Sonar but still sucks.

    Why is everything so small?

I have an 18, 20, 21, 40, and 50 that I have tried all with.  I use 2 at a time regardless of the size being used and set the resolution to suite the smaller of the 2 being used.  I prefer the 20 & 21" to work with As for working between the 2, having TV up on one and CV on the other works OK for me. What I have found with the way I work is with the PC expanded on CV and a high number of tracks that push them of the screen, as I click on a track in TV it will automatically jump to that track in TV.  Takes all the scrolling out of it. Ive considered going to twin 24's or 26's but am in no hurry right now.  I havent experienced the PC problem you are illustrating though-wierd.

I manage just fine on a pair of 20" widescreens. Any larger, and they would start to partially block line-of-sight to my nearfields. And that's something you really want to avoid. I run them at 1600x900, which is less than their maximum resolution, but necessary for my geezer-eyes.

I should add that one of the reasons this setup works well for me is that I work exclusively in the track view and never use the console view. The right-hand screen is exclusively for the PRV and plugins.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

It looks like you have a MIDI track selected on the left...?

I recently upgraded my monitor situation based on SONAR X1 too.  I was running a 20" widescreen at 1600 x 900 and an old 17" square LCD at 1280 x 1024.  The combination was usable but far from ideal...  So thanks to some good pricing at CompUSA, the brick & morter version of Tiger Direct, I was able to move up to dual Viewsonic 24" LCDs at 1920 x 1080.   Wow, what a difference.   And not a bad deal at $169 each.

I have a 27 and will be getting another. How big a monitor can only be answered with how much money can you spend.

    Hi Middleman

I'm stumped on weather to upgrade to dual 24" or a single 27" or even bigger, (32" TV with HDMI as my PC has HDMI on the graphics card). With Sonar 8.5 i could see the need for dual monitors for TV and CV views but with X1's multidoc and screensets I'm thinking one big monitors would suffice, but I see you find the need for dual 27"s so now I'm stumped again.

I haven't installed X1 yet, i'm doing it this weekend now that shiny new PC has arrived so just trying to get some advice / opinions.

    Thanks

The monitors do not have to match if you want to do this on the cheap...(although that is the best situation)

I use an old 17" square LCD for plugs, track inspector, synthrack and other stuff on the left and use my 20" wide for track view and console.  Any two monitors will do (as long as you have two outputs on your graphics adapter)

+1 on bitflippers suggestion as well.
Everyone gets the one screen they like to work from primarily. You cant beat having the extra screen to run all the plugs or ???  you are working with on a particular track open.  I have 2 main location I will work from, one in Chicago and 1 at home in Michigan.  At the Chicago location, I only have a 26 in monitor and cant stand trying to actually work with just that one outside of just recording. Once you get your style down with 2 you wont like anything else.  As for the size, I find that anothing to large gets to be a head ache but I wouldnt go smaller than the 21" I believe but that is just me, (Dual 22 or 24's sound perfect to my eyes)
