I'm not aware of any cricket challenges during the game.

Ever try to hit that ball with the bat?

How boring would it be if they had to stop the game to look at an instant replay every time someone challenged an offside/no offside.

I dunno, maybe they should do like they do in cricket & tennis, allow only a certain number of challenges per game

no

If they do allow certain number of challenges, that affects the "flow" of the game and a potential advantageous situation in soccer for ex... can be nullified.  I'm not aware of any cricket challenges during the game.

In test cricket, any dubious decision can be referred "upstairs" by either the batting captain or the bowling captain to the 3rd umpire who will review all video evidence, up to a maximum number of challenges per innings (4?)

He will then give his decision. If it's not 100% clear exactly what happened, the original decision will be upheld

I fail to understand why everyone is making such a big thing of this goal line tech and whether it was clearly a goal or not and how Ukraine was robbed..

The guy that kicked it was OFF SIDE.  Even with all the best technology in the world and instant replays and referee assitants, IT WOULD NOT HAVE COUNTED!!!

A couple of weeks ago, a flotilla of 1000 boats sailed up the Thames in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. A spokesman for the Guinness Book of Records confirmed it as the greatest concentration of seamen for an 86 year old grandmother, beating Wayne Rooney's previous record.

Thanks Colin. I didn't know they did this in test cricket.....I knew the 3rd umpire was used in the One Day games.
Come to think of it, during the last World Cup, I now do remember an LBW decision that was challenged by the bowling Capt. (Thanks far jarring my memory).

However, I still don't agree with them using this as it does take away the human element as well as the flow of the game.......which is how it was played in it's original form.

meshI would take the stance that this takes away the human element away from a sport and bringing in technology only diminishes it's natural environment/flavour (so to speak). Refrees, umpires, judges etc... are all part of the sporting environment and will make mistakes......but, that's all part of the game and the players have to accept the decision(s

I doubt that it "diminishes it's natural environment".

I don't see Kobe having issues with it, or Lebron, or Adrian Peterson, or Drew Brees or some really good homerun hitters, or some pitchers. If at all, it has taken out the "doubt" ... about it being right or wrong, and making things more accurate.

None of these games, and their detail of attention to making it right, is really available in Europe, where much of the media is still controlled by the old fathers ... that still don't like "television" because it shows that they are ugly, fat, and stupid! And that they are finnicky little men that still want to control people ... (of course, this is the fun version ... you got to see "Allegro Non Troppo" and make sure you catch the Dvorak piece! ... you'll love it! It's soooooo Coffee House!)

The human element can not be erased, with or without technology!

It's a different age, place, time ... and you and I are paying "money" for these things, and we do not want to lose by the cheating ... I have no issues losing, and neither do you, when it was fair and square ... I got beat ... but when it was stolen ... that is another story, and I want those folks held accountable.

This is not the old English Parliament where everything has been the same and the Lords still rule and the rest ... will never know the difference and they can still buy the virgins! This is not the American Congress and House that is there to prevent changes to the laws of the land by creating confusion ...

And yeah ... this is a sport. But in the 20th and 21st Century, "sport", is no longer just a hobby and a fun thing that the rich did on Sunday afternoons on their horses with their champagne glasses on their hands, using the best horses in Santa Barbara when the the Royal visits it! It's a game, basically, that has come full circle, and is now in "our hands" ... and our hands know that the "human element" has nothing to do with the television or the technology ... it has more to do with our own ideas.

This is what we have to grow up, and yeah ... there are times when it is not fun, but if you had seen, or can find, a video of that Brazil game against Czeckoslovakia where they took out Pele ... and how the Czecks went for his ankles until they took him out of the game ... you don't think that Instant Replay would have nailed this in the first 20 minutes ... watch it!

It's not perfect, I grant you that ... but it is a lot better than the alternative!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Absolutely not. It ain't happening on my watch.
Sorry Moshkiae - I don't really know you but you sound like someone who doesn't really know the game of Football (if I'm wrong then, sorry)
Football is the most annoying, frustrating, controversial, sometimes boring, fabulous, beautiful, awe inspiring, tactical, emotional, brilliant game in the world.
This is confirmed by the billions of fans around the world (and I MEAN the world not like the 'World series of baseball' or the team that wins the superbowl being called 'World champions'). This is a game that can be played by kids using a tin can in a dusty field in Africa or by overpaid professionals with big egos. The rules remain the same. The referee is and should be as much part of the game as the players - good or bad.
As I tell the kids in the team I coach, the Referee will make mistakes in this game but not as many as you will so respect him.
Without the human element, football will become clinical, passionless, boring.
It is and has been for many years, the most popular game in the world - leave it alone.

Nice game by Portugal.  Decent defending and having a lot of wood around the goal area are the only reasons why it wasn't 4-0.
