daryl1968 SteveStrummerUK I'm not saying Franck Ribéry is ugly.... But when he was born, the midwife slapped his mother's arse. :) a couple of mates and me made a Fugly Dream XI the other night and they were bloody brilliant. Lescott, Ferdinand, Ribery and Tevez' names were first on the team sheet. There must be room for a Neville or two in there

Yeah, do it Strummy. Agree 100% mgh. Ronaldo is a dick but you cannot deny his ability. He's got everything - strength, speed, great on the ball, great in the air. It's just a good job he's not good looking too.

i like almost the whole team other than the keeper; Pepe is a beast, the midfield are quick and skilful, the fullbacks can play like wingers, if they had a striker there'd be no stopping them...

Euro 2012: Wife's fury after husband heads out to Ukraine to see England play instead of celebrating anniversary One England fan looks to be in the doghouse with his partner when he gets back from the Ukraine after a banner was hung over a bridge declaring: 'I hope the quarter finals are worth missing our anniversary for.' The message was directed at a man named only as Chris who appeared to have defied his wife's wishes and flown out for the Euro 2012 clash with Italy on Sunday. The 5ft by 3ft banner has been hung over a busy dual carriageway in Birmingham where thousands of motorists pass by each day. It read: 'Chris, hope the quarter finals are worth missing our anniversary for - don't rush back!' It was first spotted by motorists travelling along the A38 between Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield on Wednesday. James Sporren, 30, from Lichfield, Staffs, who under it said he had sympathy with the man in question. He said: 'He's just enjoying a chance to support his country in a major tournament - and that doesn't come along very often. 'You shouldn't make a man pick between his woman and his country. 'They will have an anniversary every year - this is our best chance for a long time.' But fellow England fan Bob Sparling, a lorry driver from Birmingham, disagreed and said: 'Football is not the be all and end all - you need to make sure the lady in your life is kept on the right side. 'I wonder if it's directed at him while he was on his way to Birmingham Airport or whether she's just trying to name and shame him. 'But one thing is for sure - he'll have hell to pay when he gets home.'

jbow Any time the French lose... it is OK with me. Now I hope either England or Germany win the whole thing. I still don't quite understand why Ireland choked so badly, I thought they were better than that. J My business partner was wondering why France was wearing white instead of blue; I said it's because they've already given up. That could have been the most boring match of the tournament so far. As for Ireland, I'd say the All Black sent one whale of a message for them being ahead at the half during the last try. 62-0 isn't choking, it's being choked while having your head held under in a puddle of mud and having wild animals walk all over your exposed parts. Of course, there are always some that might enjoy that...

The German, Özil is an impressive player I think. To be truthful, being an "ugly American" this is the first year I have paid attention to this... football, so I am learning.. but really enjoying the play. I like it better than basketball already. I pretty much watch three sports: NFL, soccer, and the PGA tour. I sometimes turn on NASCAR in the background but I don't really watch it unless there is a wreck. These footballers have some kinda stamina, huh? They run for 90+ minutes.. I don't think I could run for 90 seconds. Hats off to 'em all! BTW, we get the English league play on cable here too. I watched some of it last year too. A question.. what is the little tune the fans hum? It has like 4 or 5 notes. I've heard it on several matches last week. J

At least in "American" football the players don't fall down and pretend to be hurt as much.

pistolpete Strummy was glad the banner read "Chis" instead of "Steve".... Well actually I was glad it said Ch ris But thanks for caring. pistolpete At least in "American" football the players don't fall down and pretend to be hurt as much. That's because they surround themselves in eight inches of protective armour. By the way Pete, your spelling and attention to detail on matters grammatical is getting worse... You're not trying to chew gum at the same time as typing are you?

Soccer players mostly fake the injuries. Acting skills have little to do with the protective gear players wear.

And I have seen some good hits lately as well.... NBA basketball players also "fake" fouls in order to get an advantage/a call to go their way. It's up to the refs to decide how much or how little will be allowed. I'm of course old school and do appreciate seeing/playing the game with true toughness (without all the acting stuff), but that seems to less and less in sports (except possibly rugby, Aussie rules football, and even American egghand football etc...). This is where men are separated from the sheep....lol

Wow, this England vs Italy game could go either way. Italy seems to be able to keep the ball but they just have not been able to get it in the net... I think if England can get one in they will win !! I hope so. Good game so far.... 83:20 right now. BTW, could someone explain to me where the +3 or +4 comes from at the end of the game. Do they add time and why?

I'm almost lost for words. We were pretty average at best, the only miracle being it even went to penalties. And is it just me, or was Rooney the worst player on the park tonight? He's got to be the most over-rated, under-achieving England footballer for a long time. Mind you, Young ran him close in the performing stakes. JB, I need you to summarise all this in your usual measured, football-understanding way.

we were watching Eng v Italy in a bar in Playa del Carmen England does not have control and does not take control of the field nor do they set up good passing positions. most of the bar were European vacationers, most were cheering for Italy.

JB, I need you to summarise all this in your usual measured, football-understanding way. Spot on Steve. Rooney should NEVER have got back automatically into the team following his 2 match ban. I thought Roy was only picking played on merit and current form, not on "reputation" Rooney was puffing & blowing after about 20 minutes - talk about unfit! England looked a lot better against Sweden when Andy Carroll was scaring the crap out of the Swedish defense. And Ashely Young? What is the point of him? He was garbage in all 3 group games, garbage again last night and missed his penalty! Ah well, World Cup qualifiers start in September.
