This is a great thread!  Everybody sounds really good.  It's fun to listen to everybody's different approaches to the song.

I wasn't going to join in. There are so many great
guitar players here and I haven't even picked up
my guitar in a while. I usually will go sometimes
weeks without ever touching it. But this weekend
I said to myself I've gotta do something so I
plugged in the Tele straight into the interface
and hit the record button.

You guys have sure laid down some nice
guitar work so I thought  I'd give it a shot.

Sweeeeeet Jimmy!!! I like the way you work back and forth Min-Maj at times. Interesting contrast - Octaves are really fine! Cool tone as well!

Ok - I finally threw something down today.  I had no time during the week, but I couldn't pass up the chance:  1) Didn't have to do my own backup tracks 2) no mastering or mixing 3) just add solo guitar - it's a no brainer- gotta do it!

geeare1,  what Kenny said.... really, I love the chords textures and the rhythms and what amnounted to a very fresh take on this backing track.

jimmyman, I knew you had it in you. :-) I love hearing a player think while they play... jimmy, you may not be in your full form (this week) but your playing conveys a deep appreciation of the universal nature of music. Bravo.

notnat and guitartek, I have to get to high speed to stream your tunes... I look forward to it.

great stuff everyone... thanks for joining in on the fun.

best,

We're both coming from more of a harder edged rock angle I guess.  I really liked your version - you put a lot into the arrangement and it paid off nicely - nice chops too!  A lot of guys are using their strats or teles into a more clean or slightly distorted blues type amps.  Those cleaner blues tones are fantastic especially on this type of tune.  After listening to Jimmy's version I grabbed my strat into a cleaner tone!

Guitartrek-  Wow, you guys must have drank some GOOD coffee.  I can't even think that fast.  Nice work.

Morenoise- Welcome.  I love the acoustic take.  I play acoustic more than electric by 100 to 1.  You have a nice sound and played the song great!

morenoise.... good take on this with the acoustic guitar, I would have liked to hear it more intimate, less reverb, because the reverb almost makes it sound like an electric jazz played clean.   Good picking and welcome.... great way to introduce yourself.

Geno...... yeah man you can play..... I especially like the harmonics .... very much like Billy Gibbons with those harmonics.

Alot of great phrasing in this thread.  I wanted to offer my interpretation of the piece, despite a hand injury that makes playing difficult at the moment hopefully something worthwhile came through.    -Pulled tendon in my guitar neck thumb :(

Re:A Minor Affair: Guitar Center Blues Play Along 2010/05/02 15:53:48 (permalink)

Thank you all who commented on my version so much.
Kenny and Mike (and some others) refer to a more
or less "passion" in my playing. That subject or should
I call it a desire to do my best is both a good thing
and a sort of thorn in my side.

It's good to try but it sometimes really gets to me
when I look at my own abilities. I grew up around
Nashville and still live close. I've watched some of the
best players out there perform in a small setting.
It's one thing for a (say a guitarist) to be great
at one style.

But I've seen the many hats these guys can wear.
That is what I try to be as a musician but I sometimes
fall short of what I call a quality standard. It's a
"desire thing" for me or a "passion". I want to be
a great musician or at least be the best that I'm
capable of.

My musical life has been influenced by so
many styles and artist from such a varying
degree of genrse. from. "merle Haggard" to
"Hendrix".

Then when one looks at the affect that
Coltrain and the likes of that erra had on
players like "George Benson" and then the
effect "benson" has had on say "Brent
mason"

It just blows my mind the amazing talent
and skill and devotion and natural gift
that players through the years have had.

Mike Mccue mentioned that I "think" while
I play. In my case I have to. If I don't then
my "soloing" becomes just a bunch of notes.
However this thinking is years of study
in theory and improve.

I'm not at the level (skill) where I can just
forget about it and just play. However on a
good day and a rare occasion I've had those
moments where I go Wow? was that really
me?.

What has been great about this thread
is to get all the pickers in one room and
see where we all stand. Not a contest
but a comparison. I think this is very
healthy.

Thanks again for the comments on my
version as it lets me know how it sounds
to you all and cheers to the other great
"solos" jams and "mike" for the thread.

I hear some things in some of your
versions where I go Hum? that was really
cool so being able to do multiple listens
to different players is nice.

Hey Scotty thanks!  Nope not related to that fella.  Mr.  James Slow Marching Band told me about your sound gig near me in June, it's actually about 1/2 miles from my house, I plan on taking the wife.  We will definately be there!
