very nice Mike. I'd have mixed the guitar a bit more upfront.... don't be afraid to stand in the spotlight.

notnat, thanks for helping me with the download link. I love the way you play... did you see the review I "wrote" for your album in the coffee house last month? It seem like your playing on this tune had a character of anticipation... I thought it was cool how some of your licks seemed to lead the backing track... and not necessarily at the obvious changes but rather in a graceful sing song sort of happy vibe. The tone is excellent and I like it when I can hear a persons finger tips... so you catch my ear with your playing. Real nice. best, mike

morenoise, That's some nice playing... I like the upbeat energy you are throwing at the part you play. The acoustic sound and tone doesn't have the big sound that an electric can make, so it seems you made your sound "big" by simply playing a big time part. I respect that sort of soft spoken authority. best, mike

Hi all, Mike_mcCue, thanks for the nice comments . I like the way you leave open space in the beginning and then build up near the end, and not a blues-cliché in sight. Blipp, nice Santanaesque tone, somehow instantly reminded me of Europe, the song that is. Evadianepug, nice and relaxed tone and notes. How about doing an acoustic take? Scottytunes, A minor ROCKS! Guitarhacker, quite an opening-statement and then bringing it back down again to then build up to the end.Like the double bends and the harmonies. Once again thanks to anybody who took the the time to listen to my effort. After quite some time off from playing guitar,i sold most of them, i saw this thread on the Cakewalk forum and after hearing your efforts got inspired again to play the guitar.I am really surprised about the nice comments because it was just a one-take thing . I just plugged my electro-acoustic nylon string and started playing. After listening to it i thought the first half was quite energetic but that it faded away a bit in the end. To compensate for this i just about used all plug-ins that come with Gtrpro 3 but as Guitarhacker pointed out sometimes less is more.I will be posting some of my original music shortly,i just have to re-record it because most of it is still on cassette-tape and after listening to it the sound quality is pretty awful,i will put some songs on soundclick (www.soundclick.com/morenoise). Greetings, Morenoise

Rik, Looking forward to it...and it's good to have you on board in the cake forums. What a great way and time to get back into recording. I too did the 4 track cassette thing..... moved to Cakewalk many years back and then with some OS upgrades, was unable to record fro a few years. then I got MC4 and well.... the rest is history as they say..... I'm loving it. I think you will too.

Thanks to everyone I was inspired enough to get my equipment out long enough this morning to give this a try. I finished this in 4 takes (First 2 were practice). 2 for the lead, 2 for the incidental harmony guitar - Kind of a Neal Shon w/ Santana idea. I was never a big Journey fan but I loved how well his playing complemented Santana's on their third album. Thanks for sharing all of your talents. A Minor Affair A Minor Affair - Remixed

LPMike75, I finally got a chance to sit down and listen. I really enjoyed the style you brought to the tune and I think your version furthers the idea that there are many options when working up a lead or solo line. The playing sounds really polished and stylized... and it was interesting to hear a modern style and tone overlay an old fashioned rhythm section while seeming so familiar or, if you will, appropriate. I really like the way you take a highly compressed sustaining tone and squeeze out 'harmonics' chirps or indulge in a low growl on occasions. This thread is fulfilling my hopes that it would provide an opportunity for someone interested in writing solos to clearly see that there are many ways to do it. Tap, I need to get in town for high speed to listen... you are next. :-) Thanks for posting!!! The thread lives on. best regards, mike

Hi guys, just catching up with the great players that I missed... guitartek: Geno, awesome playing!!! Sort of a combination of DiMeola picking technique and Santana tone and phrasing...outstanding! morenoise: I love the acoustic approach you took on this. Your guitar sounds great and I love your phrasing. LPMike75: I'd have liked to hear your guitar a little more up front but your talent still shines through. I really envy your ability to move between slower licks, octaves and scary fast stuff. Cool harmonics, too! Tap: Great playing! I'm always a fan of clean guitar tones and I also love the occasional harmonies.

Sorry guys I have been busy this last week and havent had a chance to comment on everyones interpretation of this piece Mike Mccue - Really neat laid back feel, puts you in the mood..not THAT mood but like a laid back sitting on the deck at some rich friends house overlooking the beach kind of mood. Nice job, interesting tone. Evadianpug - I liked the delay, your chops sounded like you had really good insincts and were feeling what you were playing (if that makes sense). The part at 1:02-1:05 made me think that specifically. Nice job. RLD - The lick at :32 was awesome. The lick at 1:07 - 1:10 sounded totally Randy Rhoades'ish (he was my hero at one time). Some of your note choices throughout I found 'interesting' but you are a good player and I'm sure you purposely went for those odd chromatic licks to create your style. It definately added diversity to the thread and your distinct voice. Well played. Planet Blipp - I assumed (correctly) before I even hit play that you were going to have a really cool tone. I thought the lick at 2:55 started in a cool place. Sounded like you had fun jamming out to this. Nice playing. Thatsastrat - Really interesting tone. Your southern rockish licks at 1:03 ish were neat as well as the strumming stuff at 2:40 ish. Nice job. Kennywtelejazz - Love it! Great tone and playing. The chops and feel are most definately there. I love the diversity in this thread! Guitarhacker - The licks at :58 - :59 were my favorite! Nice tone. Notnat - I already knew this was going to be awesome, it seemed like something right up your alley. aaand I was right, it was awesome! I like your phrasing and subtlety. Your chops are nice and clean. Nice job. Scottytunes - What? This is fiddle..what the...dangitall when people can be really good at multiple instruments! I like your playing and note choices, you really mix it up quite a bit. Nice wah to really rock this thing out! I like the harmony melodies near the end, nice job. Geeare1 - Nice finger picking and chops! I really dig the tone you got. 2:29-2:30 lick is really cool, I never saw that coming. The nding licks were neat as well, actually I enjoyed the whole listen, your style and interpretation of this song was refreshing even after hearing the song like 10 times straight with different solo's! haha Jimmyman - Some cool Jazz licks thrown in there. 2:21-2:22 was neat descending thing. I liked your tone. You had some really cool note choices amongst some other non traditional note choices making it quite unpredictable, nice job. Again, another cool interpretation of the same song! Guitartek - Great playing and technique, I like the use of grace notes or little sweeps you use. The lick at 1:05 was neat as you changed up speed at an unpredictable time. Really great feel for changing things up, nice rippin' too! Morenoise - Your version wasnt on your page, I did however listen to 'Ebegad' and thought it was an extremely awesome acoustic sound that made me envious as heck! Tell me your secret I beg of you! LpMike75 - You suck, go work on your acoustic sound! Tap - the first :10 had some neat stuff, but I have to be honest, the guitar tone hurt my ears. The motif you had going that comes back around 2:11 was cool. I liked the melody and licks. The motif was a memorable one, but the guitar tone stabbed me in the ears throughout lol. Nice playing though.! This was great to listen to a bunch of other people play over this piece and see how they would interpret it and phrase their lines. Everyone added their own style. I havent yet got to read though this whole thread but I will momentarily. I picked up some phrasing ideas from other folks and got a kick out of the wide range of diversity we have playing along with one piece. Rock on guitar players (and guitar/fiddlers) -Mike

LPMike75, here is the direct link to my version of a minor affair: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9093158 Nice to hear someone likes the guitar sound on EBEGAD. I recorded that piece with a takamine guitar and a zoom 504 acoustic pedal.I can't remember what preset that was,i don't have that pedal anymore, but it was a combination of compression, chorus and plate reverb.I was actualy trying to make the guitar sound as un-unplugged as possible. I like the way you start your version in octaves to set the mood and then start to build up to the end. Greetings, Morenoise

Hi all, my first attempt at "a minor affair " was a first take, and i really did not spend much time on making my electric-acoustic sound like it was recorded with a microphone. While trying to find a better sound i came up with the following plug-ins: first the Squeeze compressor in Gtrpro 3 at a high ratio and a high threshold to capture the really spiky(?) tones a piezo pickup can produce, then a freeware plug-in called Voxengo Stereo Touch on the guitar cabinet preset , this creates some really short delays that widen the sound and make the guitar sound less direct.I also used the GtrPro 3 reverb on the ambience setting to simulate some space. In stead of normalizing the guitar track to compete with the backing track i used a brickwall limiter,Jeroen Breebaart Barricade, so i can play softly and still be heard above the backing track and when i play louder the sound doesn't clip because the limiter keeps it at a maximum. Btw. also made a new "spanish" sounding version of "a minor affair" try out the new sound http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9137891 Greetings, Morenoise

Morenoise - liked your acoustic nylon version but I especially liked your spanish twist. Sweet! Great tone as well. Scotty - Thanks for listening and commenting. I wish I could really get my studio up and running, but this seems to work for now. LpMike75 - Thanks for the listen and the encouragement. I had a lot of fun doing this one. Sometimes the guitar just feels so right... Need to work on the sound, though.

I'm not proficient enough on guitar to even take a stab at doing this. But for what it's worth I thought Scottytune's version really excelled above the rest. That was awesome! However I have to say that everyone submitted a really good version, ya'll are really great players and I tip my hat to you all. Pete
