Any Backup Software recommendations or advice?

Hi Peeps,

I don't backup as often as I should, and when I do I do it manually, copying various folders to at least two separate and different make/model USB hard drives.

I got Acronis free with a new SSD a bit back and I only used it, at the time, to mirror the drive I was replacing.

In order to unlock the Acronis backup tools I have to cough up a small sum, which I don't mind doing, but I thought I'd see what peeps are doing here first, just in case there is something better out there.

Other solutions I have been looking into are personal NAS drives and the "Cloud" but I end up scratching my head and give up on those.

cheers

Good question Andy, I'll be interested in any replies. I do a weekly back up of important files and folders to One Drive, an external HD and also Box.net, and W10 does a weekly image backup to another HD, but I feel I should be doing more.

You do a lot more than me then James

Cloud solutions sound ideal and, last time I was in PC World buying a couple of new external hard drives a young lady who worked there questioned why I was still going down the hard drive route when there are so many great Cloud services available. She had a point, I guess, but my main problem is internet speed. My download is quite good at  30mbps but, at the time, my upload speed was a dire 2mbps (now increased to 6mbps, but still not that great).

Photographs, music and Sonar files are my largest space eaters. At the moment I have something like 28,000 photographs taking up around 200gB. My Sonar projects folder is another 112gB of stuff. So I don't like the idea of the various Cloud solutions.

I have Macrium Reflect (paid version) for backups.  There is also a free version that many techies seem to be using from reports on computer forums.   I do full drive backups (all partitions) regularly to two different USB connected external hard drives.  I alternate backups between drives, thus if one drive failed I still have a backup (be prepared for Murphy's Law).  My Sonar projects are on a different drive and I just manually backup (copy) the projects to one of the two USB drives.

There was a recent thread in the forum Computer section about cloud backup.  Some like it others, like myself, do not.

I've used Aoemi Partition Assistant for quite awhile.
It just recently failed me...or so I thought.  Apparently
the connector on my SSD had broken so, after doing a clone
couldn't get it to work.  I had to dig the plastic connector
out of my SATA cable with the a Safety pin...that was fun.

But it works well...so I'm sure the Backupper should be fine too...

Copied from a post I put on SoundOnSound previously:

I use OneDrive extensively for storage / backup / sync.
The sync tools occasionally 'lose the plot' and may need time (or tinkering) to get them to sync again, but mostly it's very reliable.
I don't use OneDrive sync on the primary Sonar folders (they change a lot during music sessions, and the sync tool is constantly trying to keep up).
My 'sonar' login doesn't have OneDrive running (I try to stop all non-essential services), but at the end of each session I copy the relevant folders from my Sonar project folder over to one of the folders that are sync'd by OneDrive (under my primary user account). I then log in as my primary account and leave the PC running for a while to sync to OneDrive (getting my work offsite as quickly as practically possible after the session finishes).

I take local backups (approx. monthly) of all data to USB drive (and store at work) to provide 'point in time' historic, offsite backups (and also mitigate against any issues with OneDrive.

The only risk left is Malware (in particular Ransomware) - if this hits then it is likely to sync the infected / encrypted files to OneDrive before I know it's happened. The offsite (monthly) backups help against this, but that could be a lot of work (up to 1 month) to lose....

So lastly, I have a secondary drive in the PC that is only accessible by a specific 'backup' user (and it's encrypted with BitLocker). Weekly (or more often) I login as the backup user and XCOPY all my data onto the secondary drive.

So I have (almost) real-time backups to the cloud, weekly backups to an onsite backup, and monthly backups offsite.

Paranoid?? - Probably....
https://www.soundonsound.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=49440&hilit=onedrive&start=25

Added to that, I've since found another option. With Office365 Home you get 5 users - and I'm only using 2 (me and the Mrs) - so I've created 2 further accounts as 'backup' accounts (with different email addresses and passwords). You can then use a free online tool like MultCloud (https://www.multcloud.com/home) to copy my entire OneDrive to my 'backup' OneDrive (this is all done in the cloud and doesn't use your PC or internet connection at all).
Again this occasionally has issues - mainly with open files (such as OneNote which may be running on my phone) - but is another great way to keep backups (and make use of the 'free' storage from my subscription).

Ever since my computer was stolen along with my external backup drive, I've become a paranoid triple-backer-upper.

Acronis has been doing fine for me, although I haven't had to restore anything yet, and that's the crucial test of any backup software. Back in the day I used tape backups, and while it was painless to restore an entire disk image it was a PIA to retrieve a single file or directory. But for automatic backups at least, Acronis is easy and unobtrusive. Just be sure it's not doing it while you're recording.

Acronis is not my only backup strategy, though. I use batch files and xcopy /d to make copies of my most critical data onto the removable drive as well as to another computer. It was the copies to another computer that saved my life after the burglary. Sadly, I hadn't had enough disk space there for my music projects, so they are gone forever.

Sample libraries are another challenge. I lost a lot of those in the robbery, but fortunately most (but not all) vendors let me re-download them. So when I get a new Kontakt lib nowadays, I copy it to DVD as soon as possible and stash all those disks in shoeboxes far away from the studio.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Acronis True Image... via the bootable rescue disc
Have backed up hundreds of machines over the past 12+ years using this method.
Has never failed...

Super clean/lean as nothing is installed... and backup/restore is done completely outside of Windows.

As per my other thread I'm moving from CrashPlan to Carbonite - both cloud based, fully encryptable with a key you can create and control. All good there but you need to pay for it. I've used Acronic (sic) for years. Generally reliable but every so often they really drop the ball with a howler of a release but the next patch usually fixes it. Despite this I would recommend it. I will never do the cloud thing...that requires internet access if you
want to restore.  That's just not a good idea...I'd prefer it at my disposal
regardless of Internet....YMMV

Cloud based backup is (IMO) a little impractical for a DAW.
  • Constant connection and "sync" can/does affect performance
  • Our files tend to be large/contiguous (audio/video)... whereas most "office" type files are much smaller (thus more practical for cloud based backup/restore).

If you've got hundreds of GB of data to backup, that's a *massive* amount of time to upload.
Download would be significantly faster... but still super tedious compared to local backup/restore.

Like Jim said, it's a bit impractical if you're thinking of backing up all of your stuff regularly to the Cloud.

I suggest getting a large external drive and something like GoodSync Pro (file sync/backup software).  You set it up once to schedule backups of your folders unattended (assuming you leave your HW powered on).

Alternatively (or supplementally), you can use something like Macrium or Acronis to do regular backup images of your system partition/drive, as well as your data folders.  I highly recommend this approach, as it will save you from having to reinstall the O.S. ever again.

For multiple drives or a network, NAS is the way to go.  Of course, the more advanced setup, the more $$ you'll have to shell out.  At minimum, you should be backing up your system partition and important data, which should fit on an inexpensive external drive.

I don't find it affects my system at all and you can always pause it if you're using a lot of processing during an editing session. Ultimately it's a matter of choice, I like the set and forget nature of it but as long as you have the discipline to do offline backups or leave a device attached so you can schedule it then local backups are fine. One big advantage of offline backups is that they protect you from ransomware in a way that cloud services don't; as long as you do them regularly that is.

Acronis has been doing fine for me, although I haven't had to restore anything yet, and that's the crucial test of any backup software.

I recently got a warning from S.M.A.R.T. during boot up of my music computer that one of my drives was failing and that I should back up and replace the drive. After doing some research, I realized that my two internal Seagate 3TB drives were famous for early failure rate. I remember that Apple informed me that they would pay for me to have that Seagate drive replaced on my wife's iMac. Seagate is undergoing a Class Action suit over that drive. https://www.hbsslaw.com/cases/seagate

I use Acronis True Image for back up. I replaced the two drives with WD 4TB drives and easily restored all the data using Acronis restore. Worked perfectly!

Ironically the drive in my office computer failed a week later and the data on the drive was corrupted.I replaced that drive with a 500GB SSD for OS and applications, and another WD 4TB for Data.  Acronis saved the day again! I just updated to Acronis True Image 2018.

I used to use Acronis True Image (the last version I had was either 2012 or 2013).  It failed me twice on restores and it didn't get a third chance and the reason I switched to a different backup application (Macrium Reflect).  I had problems with the Acronis Linux rescue disc (booting up on one PC and running Acronis after boot).  I didn't have a problem with the Acronis WinPE disc but the Acronis procedure (at least when I had it) was a clunky manual procedure to create the WinPE disc, where Macrium had a "painless" mostly automated procedure to create the WinPE disc.

I haven't had any problems with disc restores using Macrium Reflect.

Here's what I do! I have a 1TB USB drive where I installed my OneDrive directory. I use a free program call FreeFileSync that allows me to mirror my project files to my USB drive which in turn mirrors to OneDrive. Initial backup takes a while since it's mirroring the whole drive but afterwards, it only updates files that have changed. I backup every day and it takes about minute.

I've always followed the rule, if your data doesn't exist in three places, it doesn't exist. This method meets that intent.

As usual, YMMV..

Peace!

A quick note on Macrium Reflect I just found out replacing an SSD. The FREE version does NOT allow restoring an image to a drive other than its original source. The retail version does. Although I have always restored to the original disk without issues on the free version, that loophole makes the image worthless in the event of catastrophic failure of the SSD using the free version.

Luckily I did a preemptive strike on the SSD failure and Samsung's Data Migration worked like a charm, BUT that requires the source disk in tact. All authorizations and junctions took (Win7), even though only the two SSDs were connected to the computer.

Are you saying you that could not restore to a replacement drive with Macrium Free after a drive hardware failure?

I took a few days to get all my projects backed up to Carbonite (750Mbps/750Mbps fiber optic here). After that I set it to backup once daily (while I sleep). Ya, worst case I could lose a days worth of work. That is a whole lot better than losing it all. On heavy DAW days I could "resume" the backup while I take a lunch or dinner break.

I do full C: drive backups with Acronis on all 5 of my machines to my NAS with one week of incrementals. I keep two full weeks of that at all times. For my DAW that means all new programs and VST/VSTi installs are backed up daily.

I just need to get those on Carbonite too.

Correct, and it seems to be baked into the image as well. I pulled the old SSD, put in a new, and there is an option to apply the image but only in the paid version. I am not sure if there is an out to that if the SSD is already gone (both the image itself and recovery disk seem to have "free" baked into them). After cloning the original, Reflect says the last two images done with the old SSD do not match the installed hardware.

I am not sure if it is possible to upgrade Reflect after the imaged SSD fails.

Well, crap, that's bad news if it's true!  Think I'll try wiping my D: data partition on my 1TB WD SATA HDD today (already have images of that for backup) and see if I can restore my C: system SSD image to that with Reflect Free.

Will report back with my results.  Yikes!

Just remember what they say about free. You get what you pay for.

Well I have already paid for a LOT of great freeware so far, that meets my needs.  Just saying ...

Re: Any Backup Software recommendations or advice? 2017/09/07 14:40:51 (permalink)
I ended up trying something called GoodSync. Bit of a corny name, but after trying it for a few backup "jobs" I quite liked how it worked.

It was recommended by a photographer who I have been taking advice from (via YouTube event videos) regarding software called Lightroom, which is for organising and adjusting photographs. I liked his general attitude and he is quite a good teacher, in my opinion, so when I found out he uses GoodSync to back up his hundreds and thousands of photographs and general data I thought, "yeah, I'll check that out."

I paid £32 for two licenses (I'm going to use it on my wife's computer too). So, not free, but not all that expensive either.

It has a few bells and whistles but I only use it to create a one way backup. I also don't bother with doing checksum checks and rely on the software spotting differences in date/time stamps. For some reason a lot of my existing backup files had different time stamps... Some out by just a minute or two, some out by a whole hour and some out by random amounts. This meant it took me quite a while to get everything back into sync, but now that is done I can backup any changed files quite quickly.

I have also got it writing a particular set of data to my Google Drive and that works well too.

Should have done this a LONG time ago...

Regarding imaging my system drive... I'm still sitting on the fence about this one. When I imaged my 240gb SSD system drive a couple of years ago Acronis worked fine so I may still use that. First, though I have to go get some more USB3 hard drives.

If my system drive does give up the ghost I may well take the opportunity to install stuff from scratch. Sometimes a fresh install works wonders for blowing the cobwebs out and getting rid of stuff you just don't use anymore.

+1 for FreeFileSync.  I use this to make copies of document and project files/folders to an external USB drive, in between images.  That way I have a copy of the most recent file versions, even if my image is a day or two old...

The image is still good for full system recovery, but this way I don't risk losing a day's work either!
