[[ I’m an existing or old SONAR user and have questions about my old account or subscription or want a refund.

BandLab Technologies did not acquire the operating company of Cakewalk Inc., only the complete set of intellectual property, patents, trademarks and certain assets necessary or related to the entire Cakewalk product suite.

Does this mean that anyone who bought into lifetime updates before 21st Feb 2018 will now have to pay again to get the "BandLab" version when it appears?

So reading the last question and answer in the FAQ, they don't have any obligation nor intend to provide support to any previous owners of Sonar. Ouch. I guess they're starting from a clean slate.

OK .. So here is what I reckon. Bandlab are as aware of old Cakewalk userbase drift as everyone else here?

They will possibly run VERY QUICKLY with what would have been the next big monthly update to Sonar before the November event. I wonder was there such an update in the cooker already that did not get released at the time?

Email all Sonar users saying its available at the Command center FREE.

Then from there once they have the initial goodwill gesture sorted .. they start offering upgrades and other pathways going forward?

Interesting. Maybe that's why GC and Musician's friend had advertisements a week ago(although it's been since taken down) I've never heard of Bandlab but it looks like their into portable recording and have their own interfaces.

I think there's a near zero chance that they will honour the lifetime updates. However, on the other hand, I cannot imagine them starting from a clean slate as in : everyone will have to buy a new full license. I would think that their existing customer base is too important for the success of this acquisition to pull off something like that. Question then of course is how they will support that existing customer base given that it might be that they don't even have the records from Gibson to know who the existing base is.
Anyway, time will tell, but if all of a sudden I would have to buy the full new-user price for a new version of Sonar, I'm not so sure I will do that given the unstable past of the company/product.

This news is fantastic!
With the lifetime we have saved a lot to have Sonar the important thing is that they resume the development of this wonderful daw.
I understood even better how Sonar is professional when I tried others.

I'm really pleased that they've bought Sonar, it means the product has a future.

I have a lot of older projects in Sonar so knowing that it will still be supported is great.

Fingers, toes and (all other appendages crossed) that this means Sonar customers will have some easy transition into Bandlab - I'm a Lifetimer, and I can only hope that aidanodr is right. I'd hate to have to 'buy' the product again just to guarantee functionality.
At least the waiting game is over!

This is great news I guess and a bit concerning though. Have started to move on to Studio One and really like. Projects were pretty easy to transfer over using the method that Sweetwater provided.  Certain things I will miss in Sonar like the staff view and a way to put chord changes on a Midi file. Will have to see what happens in the months to come. Hopefully it will be more good news and I hope that a lot of the Team from Cakewalk will be pulled in to work on the newer versions.

I do have a Mono guitar case which is under BandLab. They are great. Cloud based music creation doesn’t excite me at all as cloud apps don’t work for me. I would not be excited to pay full cost for the next possible update of Sonar. Seems that would be another slap in the face to lifetimers, and not at all an enducement to reexplore a future Sonar line. So I will be interested to see how this all develops.

Frankly, I am most concerned that Sonar Platinum will continue to be the innovative product it has always been.  I have and continue to use it as my main daw of choice.  Hopefully, they will be astute enough to also look into some of the fine programmers who were a part of Sonar and the Sonar progress.  Truth is that when a company buys a product like this they have only two options.  One is to continue development for the good of everyone or two is to relegate it to the backburner.  I do not see this company as the latter.  They appear progressive and certainly proactive.  I think it will ultimately be good for us all.  What can be better than that in the long run?

Good news!  Sonar lives!

At least now we will have somebody to keep the product activation servers running, so we can continue to install and use the products we have paid for.

I am fairly sure that any future support and upgrades from Bandlab will require payment, as nobody works for free.

I am encouraged by this news. I do hope that BandLab can release that one final update and some fixes as an acknowledgement of the existing paid customers - offer us a bone, so to speak. I like that BandLab is enthusiastic about bringing the world of music together, enabling content creation, sharing, and discussion.

They already have a free online DAW, so Cakewalk SONAR technology could be partially or entirely folded into that, though I hope the main SONAR product continues to exist as a product. The challenge I saw was that something like a DAW the scope of SONAR really needs a full ecostructure to exist within. Does BandLab have a place to provide that.

I hope we see some involvement by BandLab here in the forums.

Just an additional thought.... should BandLab try to buy something like TASCAM, too? The interfaces and recording technology of someone like TASCAM could be tied into SONAR (or vise versa) to fill out the ecosystem (which is the word I was looking for and couldn't find in that previous post).

That is a valid question. Advertising? I haven't joined their community yet, so I haven't seen their community.

BandLab Technologies is a collective of global music brands with a vision to connect the world of music.
Together, our brands share a passion.

I have insufficient English to understand what that means
From what I can understand, they have someone who can write applets and web apps.

Most probably they have payed for asserts. In this case at least they have some money and that is positive.

Are they sufficiently fit to return Sonar into the game? Till there is an evidence that can be true, I am pessimistic.

I don't expect them to honor the lifetime updates, but I'll be darned if I have to buy another full version of this product again. I really hope they give their pre-existing customers a deep discount.

I've been trying 4 or 5 different DAW's and I'm about this close to pulling the trigger on Studio One. I might still do it while the cross-grade is available just because it's actually really good. I just miss all the plugins that are restricted to my Sonar purchase.
