For fun, you can download this SONAR project called fadertest.cwp

I did not write it.  It was developed many years ago, I assume for testing the Tascam FW-1884.  All it does is exercise the faders continuously.  My memory is that the Tascam's fader movements were smoother than the Behringer X-Touch's are.

If you open this project in SONAR, it will ask to create the missing audio file.  Go ahead and let it.  It will then look for the missing audio file, and you can say Skip.  Once the project loads, just press Run.  The automation curves are all that is needed.

It's on my website, here:   http://mattfinley.com/fadertest.cwp

Software: Cakewalk by Bandlab; Adobe Audition; Band-in-A-Box audiophile; Izotope Ozone; Encore; Melodyne; Win 10 Pro, 64-bit.

Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd; Roland Integra-7; TCE Finalizer; Presonus Central Station, Behringer X-Touch.  Home built i7 with 16 GB RAM, SSDs.

I got my X touch on Thursday. Got it working on Thursday and Friday. Now today, Saturday, I can't get the play button on the X touch to work. When I hit the play button on the X touch all it does is send the Now Time marker back to the beginning of the song. The stop, rewind and fast forward buttons all seem to work fine. I am sure it is not the unit because all the transport buttons, including the play button work fine with Ableton Live. Just having the problem in Sonar Platinum. All button seem to work except play and record.

I tried deleting and adding the unit again but still having the same issue. I am using Mackie Control. I am updated to the latest Sonar Platinum release. Any ideas to solve this problem?

Regards,

Chech the preferences and make sure the X-touch is listed for input and output and that the any other controllers listed (if any) are correct. I had a problem after a reinstall where the controllers needed to be reset. After that, everything worked fine.

Thanks. I had the V-Studio 100 still listed under control surfaces. I don't use it anymore. I deleted it and everything is working properly now!

Great!

For anyone else hitting this thread in the middle, I put up a few basic instructions on how to get the X-Touch running in SONAR.  I do not claim it is a definitive tutorial, but try it to set up your X-Touch.

I've been using mine for a week or two now, and find it comparable to the FW-1884, which I also like/liked. Knock on wood, but I have not had any issues so far. I am currently using Newburyport in Sonar Platinum with Windows 10. After being used to the FW-1884, going back to a mouse was very annoying to me. Feels great to be using faders again! :)

There is a 2 part video on youtube that I found helpful in setting it up. Here is part 1, which will bring you to part 2.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-8VO1vpc7U&nohtml5=False

Part 1 has most of the important stuff in it. While it sometimes takes the speaker a little while to get to the next point, it's well worth watching IMO.

So it's been about 9 months since this unit came out. Has there been a firmware update and how does it work now with sonar Platinum? My Roland V 700 is going to be too inconvenient to use because it won't work after the anniversary update Windows 10 so I bought another interface, and preamp and I would like to have a basic control surface.

Hi Steve.  Yes, there was one firmware update a few months ago, and one shortly after it was released.  I don't remember the firmware made any difference with SONAR.  The unit still is completely stable for me.

Hi Matt, good to see you. As long as it's working that's great. What type interface do you have? I just got an audient because of the low latency and the analog digital converters. Does the Behringer plug directly into the computer and into the interface from the out of the Behringer?

Re: Behringer X Touch 2016/10/12 16:08:53 (permalink)
The X-Touch is not a soundcard, unlike the FW-1884 that I replaced, so there is no output needed from the Behringer except the USB connection to the computer.  The I/O through USB gives you a MIDI control surface that emulates the Mackie Control Unit.

There is MIDI In/Out, footswitch control, Ethernet, and two USB hubs on the Behringer, but you still need a separate soundcard.  My equipment is listed in my signature.  The Focusrite 18i20 is the heart of it.

Software: Cakewalk by Bandlab; Adobe Audition; Band-in-A-Box audiophile; Izotope Ozone; Encore; Melodyne; Win 10 Pro, 64-bit.

Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd; Roland Integra-7; TCE Finalizer; Presonus Central Station, Behringer X-Touch.  Home built i7 with 16 GB RAM, SSDs.

I'm hip to the X not being a soundcard.
Hence the Audient.

The audient id14 is an audio interface. USB powered it only has balanced outputs for my powered speakers but the round-trip latency is very good and analog digital converters are supposedly great.
I bought a focusrite ISA one which handles the preamp duties. Probably go line out of that into the line-in of the audient.

I should order the X touch and get everything up and running to take advantage of the post summer creative spirit so I could get a new CD done by Spring.

Cheers

A couple more questions Matt. You had the audio interface hooked up before you added the X Touch or both at the same time?

And you are using Windows 10 with the anniversary update?

And your audio interface was installed before the update and remains operative after the update? I think I will now allow the computer to perform the anniversary thing. Wish me luck.

I have a Behringer X-Touch.  The Anniversary Update did not affect it or my MOTU 896mk3 Hybrid.   It did wipe out my Roland/Edirol PCR 500 but that was not really a big deal, as I rarely used it.

That's exactly why I just purchased the audient id14 and the X touch. None of my roland stuff works anymore so... And it does piss me off that I only got 7 years out of it.

Not exactly what you asked, but since Roland has been mentioned: I also use a Roland Integra-7 as my MIDI hardware synth.  The latest Windows update does not appear to have affected that, either.

If I still had the Roland Fantom XR I used to use, I would have been more worried.

X-touch with fixed overlay is pretty cool in Sonar.  Thanks to Azslow3 for the photoshopped map.

Is there a way to fix those issues:
  1. The timer only works with MBT not HMSF (SMPTE), why?
  2. Fader gain unity not at odb but more or less +2db, why?
  3. The "Clip" led not blinking in the meters when a channel is overloaded

Cheers,

All
I made an overlay from a picture I found somewhere (don't remember exactly where) for my X-touch to (kinda of) match the color of the device. I am attaching it here in case you are interested.

THE FORUM DOES NOT LET ME ATTACH DROPBOX Links, PM me if interested.

This is how it looks (printed it on a self adhesive laser paper and cut it to fit) - It could still be improved though :).

Also, given it is quite a ride to learn all the Mackie controls (at least for me!), I summarized them in a PDF file (sort of a manual) so it is easy to follow. link below

I couldn't resist the $449 price tag, either.  Got mine last night.  Set it up in 15 minutes using Matt Finley's guide here.

So the question is, where can I find a .pdf of this template file (the base one, not azlow's)?

Just a small update, if you have an X-touch and don't have a footswitch, you should seriously consider getting one (or two).  They are great for recording and transport control.  However, be aware that you need a "non-latching" footswitch.

I purchased the wrong kind of footswitch, but when I get the right one, I can see the workflow improvements when I am recording.

I bought the X-touch primarily for mixing, but I will get a lot of improvements in recording workflow as well.

I agree 100%, it improves workflow substantially. I use mine with a Boss FS-6 Dual Footswitch, and works great with the X-Touch. Right one for playback start/stop and left one to record start/stop and "on the fly" activation. It is also latch/no-latch selectable for both pedals.
