Behringer X Touch

Does anyone have any feed back on the new Behringer controller which came available this past week?  How does it get along with Sonar Platinum?  Any issues with the unit itself?  thanks for any feed back

The reviews on Sweetwater don't look too favorable so far:

I was one of the first to place and order and was really looking forward to getting the x-touch. What I got was something that didn't work. Yes the faders moved but almost everything else didn't work. It doesn't work under HUI only a limited amount under Mackie Control. All those nice buttons on the right side of the unit for automation etc., none of them work. Literally, the faders work and the basic transport buttons (play, stop, rewind, fast forward, record) that's it.

Behringer has promised a firmware update but has no release date. There is no way to program the buttons, no manual other than a terrible quick start guide.... I'm really surprised Sweetwater still lists this product on their site it's that bad. Unless Behringer performs a miracle quickly, I'm sending this back"

From other posts I've seen, here and on other forums,  that user either get a defective unit or doesn't know how to set up his DAW.

May be the price (1/2), size, weight, Ethernet?

"Mackie emulation" is a misleading description. Real meaning is "support Mackie protocol". It is just a definition which MIDI message each button/fader/knob sends when you touch it. For example, Sonar support VST protocol. But it is not a "Cubase emulation"

That's MR. NoName to you!  I agree that you have to take some of these reviews with a grain of salt, but usually you can average them out if there is enough of them. Might be too early to draw any conclusions. My contact at Sweetwater is taking one home to try out. Looking forward to his review. He's always been straightforward with me.

I propose we split the question into two:
1) how good it works in Sonar. If some buttons do not do what they should, we (well... I ) can fix that within a day, so that is not a show stopper.

2) the quality and reliability of the unit itself. Does it disconnects periodically? Does it change fader position on it's own and how precise these faders are? Also buttons, encoders, display and jogger quality, material and feel. That is something only Behringer can fix in case there are some problems.

So, for 1 (compatibility with Sonar).

With big help from mbowitz on my forum, which has provided MIDI messages layout for X-Touch, I could compare it with other layouts with the following conclusion:

X-Touch has exactly the same buttons with exactly the same labels as MCU Pro.

Azslow,

What are the Track, Bus, Main buttons used for?

I'm hoping that the Bus button would control the 8 buses in MB3 or the (unlimited, via bank switch) SONAR buses.

Yes? No?

Yes, these buttons switch which strip type control 8 strips on device. More information you can find in the plug-in help file.

In fact the picture is the same as Sonar overlay for MCU units, called "The Lexan Overlay". Mackie Control Buttons section in the help file. Just with better resolution and for X-Touch

Thx for that. I do not own the unit. I planned to get one next year (maybe March) but I wanted to confirm that was what it was about since I also plan to use this CS in MB3, Reaper and Studio One 2 (and/or 3).

Azslow, you are light years ahead of me on working wth X- Touch (mainly because I don't have one yet.)

Questions: I don't understand "With big help from mbowitz on my forum, which has provided MIDI messages layout for X-Touch, I could compare it with other layouts...." Would you please elaborate?

Is the Sonar overlay part of the X-Touch package or something you made I.e. With Photoshop?

Appreciate your reports!

I also do not have it

Questions: I don't understand "With big help from mbowitz on my forum, which has provided MIDI messages layout for X-Touch, I could compare it with other layouts...." Would you please elaborate?

Each control on device:
1) has some position
2) has some label
3) send some MIDI message
Since I have no X-Touch, I have asked someone who has it to check what are relations between (1)(2) and (3).
From other sources, I already had that relations for MCU (old one), MCU Pro (current one) and Sonar Layout for MCU (old one). Comparing all that layouts, I could conclude that (2)->(3) is exactly the same as on MCU Pro.

And I also could...

Is the Sonar overlay part of the X-Touch package or something you made I.e. With Photoshop?

draw the Sonar overlay for X-Touch. It is "Photoshoped" (really done with Gimp) part of picture from Behringer site. I guess by printing it with correct size (you can find BW layout version on my forum to try it first without wasting color ink and good paper) and cutting halls for buttons it is possible to produce real overlay.

Azslow,

Thanks for your help! I just quickly looked at your WEB SITE. I don't understand how to obtain/use the "plugin from sdupayage" you discussed in a previous post.

Can you help me with this? Do I really need it or just Photoshop me a new overlay?

You do not any other plug-in till you want something special from your X-Touch. Take the picture (this on BW one from my forum) and print it. From that point, you can follow Mackie Control help file looking at printed layout instead of labels on device. Everything should work as described (except EQ/Dyn buttons).

To clarify the situation with "other plug-ins":
1) there is a mod of original plug-in to work with "MCU semi-compatible" QCon Pro. Not much advantages to use it with X-Touch, since it looks like really compatible.
2) there is my mod of original plug-in which returns EQ/Dyn buttons functionality for ProChannel
3) there is a preset in my own plug-in, it mimics Mackie original plug-in, does not has parameters remapping but supports ACT.

All the buttons are the same,  that overlay replaces the printing on the X Touch with the functions they perform in Sonar...

Talking of X Touch...  As I already have a Faderport that provides transport and looping controls, would a X-Touch Compact be more suitable?  no jog wheel (I have one anyway) but eight more encoders....  (and its cheaper)

I have a Frontier Tranzport which has those functions but went with the full X-Touch.  I had considered the Compact model but the Tranzport is old and as they are no longer made it can't be replaced.  Also, I only use the Tranzport when I play pedal steel guitar on a recording as I can start stop remotely.

2) the quality and reliability of the unit itself. Does it disconnects periodically? Does it change fader position on its own and how precise these faders are? Also buttons, encoders, display and jogger quality, material and feel. That is something only Behringer can fix in case there are some problems.

Just a little comment on this question:

After three months using mine, the quality and reliability seems fine. It has never disconnected.  The faders have not moved on their own, except of course when initializing a project.  I rather like having that visual and audible snap-to.  I use the sliders and the transport buttons and the jog wheel primarily, so I have no comment on all the rest of the buttons except I hope someone comes out with a nice vinyl colored template.  The rotary encoders I haven't needed to use, except for panning which worked fine.

I am coming from a Tascam FW-1884, a solid unit I would still be using were it not for their drivers.  The quality of this Behringer seems comparable.  The faders are also 100 mm and seem to be as accurate as the Tascam's.  I too had a very poor experience with an early mixer from Behringer (background hiss, scratchy faders), so I am pleased the quality control has improved for the X-Touch.

Hello,

Can anyone comment on the X touch in comparison to the MCU, especially in regards to compatibility with Sonar Platinum and overall performance? I've been using a FW-1884 like RioJazz, but it's time to find a replacement due to drivers. The MCU looked like the most similar in regards to a control surface/layout, but the X Touch looks like a nice option. Thanks!

Recked (great user ID), I think most of us would only buy one or the other.  It will take someone who has access to lots of hardware to be able to offer a comparison.  The MCU is still twice the cost.

Just wanted to bump your question, though.

..and has a much larger footprint. The MCU would not fit on my recording desk.

I'm really tempted to get the X-Touch -  so keep on posting your observations, guys. April's coming up and I might just spring for one.

Had the X-Touch for about 3 weeks now and am very happy with it. Printed out the color template (Thank you for that!) on a gloss cardstock, I did have 2 issues where pressing any key on it crashed sonar until I realized that the Presonus Faderport I have ( connected through the USB bus on the X-Touch ) had been changed to the X-Touch in the controller section so there were essentially 2 X-Touches listed as controllers. Once I corrected that it has been smooth sailing. Will probably pick up the Compact version when the funds allow since they can be linked allowing for extra control and less switching between banks and channels.
