I managed a very short session on the weekend and had a couple of crashes with X1E.

I haven't narrowed it down, but it seems as though my system was rock solid until I installed the new gate/expander.

Interesting, Jonesey.   FWIW, I didn't go with the Expander/Gate version;  I just went with the normal "Expanded" version.   SO it will be interesting to see if a different version manifests a different affect on systems.

My plan is to uninstall the gate/expander and give the rest of it a thorough workout, but time is a precious commodity these days.

If I get anywhere with it Billy I'll let you know.

Yeah, thanks Jonesey, I'd be curious to see how you're being affected by Expanding ;)

FWIW, after I install anything of substance I always do a full reboot.  I do think it helps in most cases.   And usually I do a reboot BEFORE installing something of substance as well.

[quote]  (ba-midi) BSOD usually means there's a hardware error or driver related to hardware; I wouldn't be so sure to blame Sonar in that case. Sometimes a host program like Sonar can expose a hardware problem, however. I always recommend people make sure windows is NOT set to reboot on errors so that we can actually see what the error is. So if you got a BSOD and could see what it was, let us know what it was - maybe someone around here would have a suggestion or knows how to resolve it.

Looking at the minidumps of my BSOD varies with the crash, but one file in the dumps seems to always be present (my Motu 424 PCIX drivers) I guess I will be looking to update them. It's frustrating that 8.5.3 never crashes but x1(all) will. However is spite of that, the stability and crashes are fewer with expanded. Now if I can just get the last of it gone. I haven't had any crashing in years since the Logic 4x fiasco, if any former users are here and remember that. I still believe that expanded has some non  placebo improvements, but as Billy stated reveals underlying problems on my system. Ironically I found that if I load the "normal" template first, then close it and load the project I have been experimenting on, I can work sometimes for hours without crashing. How bizarre is that.

Device drivers -- especially audio devices - are a good suspect for BSOD's.   Sometimes drivers just get corrupted in Windows and simply need reinstalling.   BUT if there are solid updates, you probably would benefit from getting them.

I forgot to mention that what you state above in the quote is something I saw regularly when trying to work with X1 A/B/C prior to "E"xpanded.   Expanded seems to have solved almost every issue I was having, fortunately.

However, I would suggest redoing your normal.cwt (template) from scratch (save your old one of course) and see what happens.

You might also want to back up your aud.ini and then delete it to let Sonar reinitialize it (then go in and check all your options are set as you like).

Agreed. Motu pci devices are such a pain to redo. You have to uninstall, power down, then rip the card out of the machine then reinstall, power down, reinstall the card, reboot and find the install. Why did I build that machine into the desk so well?

Heh, well - in that case, save your moola for an updated MOTU device.

I have/use/love my Ultralite MKiii (Firewire).  It never gives me headaches.

Only problem with that is I need to arm up to 24 tracks on ADAT light pipe in the studio when the full bands are in. The motu 2408 has always served me well with that.

At least update your drivers then ;)

Looking forward to doing that. I have final mixing and mastering sessions this week. If the client signs off that's the plan this weekend after an image backup.
