I enjoyed the song - only crits - I would have added more low end - more emphasis on the bass and kick in the mix.  Great job on vox.

I agree. In fact, I played with Robby's mix and boosted the lows, but he chose to leave it as he had mixed it.

Well, I typically like to get a smattering of opinions from several listeners. My early mixes had too much bottom... I did boost it on the MBand about 1/2 db, raised the drums a weence, upped the harmony parts a smidge, and boosted the fiddle solo a scosh and reposted :-) Oh I hit it a little harder with a limiter boost too. This mix is "in your face." more so than most of mine which are usually more subtle.

I might kick it in the butt just a little harder... and back that limitter out some. It distorted a little on the 2nd Ooooo where it was working pretty hard.

May the circle be unbroken. Robby as hillbilly (and I mean that in the most flattering sense), and a very credible one at that. The grass is bluer...........? A ton of fun

Yeaup, I have that album on vinyl, as I'm sure many of us do! Thanks for listening, and for commenting Mark, I'm a hillbilly from way back... Northern Va. I used to go watch a grass band called the Seldome Scene quite a bit, and I've seen Doc Watson, Allison Kraus before they turned her in to a pop star, lots of big grass bands, I wish I was a true grass caliber musician (like Scotty). I mean, in my opinion, you have to have a really special talent to play that stuff (live) we can do anything in our studios :-) Thanks!

2nd country tune in a row this afternoon..not my favourite genre, but you do it well Robby. Good vibes are pouring out o' this one Nice job on the walking bass line - perfect! I'm guessing that banjo is done on the keys, 'cos you've mentioned it before. Neat work, it takes a lot to get that feel right.

Thanks James, yeaup, I busted my rear on that stoopid banjo track... It took longer than anything else! Fortunately, I have OCD about music, so I can work on a track "for weeks... Which is how long that banjo took. I tell people (at work) my two big challenges were, 1) I'm not a banjo player, and 2) I don't have a banjo. And they're all like, "well how'd you do it?" and I'm all like, go to youtube and punch in "banjo lesson" you'll get some big redneck named Jethrow showing you "technique..." Then you take the song  you're trying to do, and you slow it down... And play along with it, practice, get things in, speed it up, edit it, and repeat... It can be maddening. At some point you have to just say, it's going to be in the mix, this is good enough, and move on :-) The keys took a few days, and the drums, everything else was a few hours, and lots of mixing... And waiting patiently for "the precious..." which I mixed in when I got it.  Scotty wanted to change a couple of things, he's a perfectionist. But I liked it the way it is, so I put it up.

I sympathize..the fiddle parts I did on 'When the Devil Gives Up' and 'Buried With Time' took days, and even though the lines repeated, I didn't copy/paste because it took away from the feel. It's worth all the work if you want that sound bad enough

Wow! Fiery playing all around!!  That bass really stood out for me in a good way..great sound on it, along with the chops.

Kudos Robby & Scotty! I've really grown in appreciation for the country bluegrass music over the years, so this was a treat to hear.

You nailed this one Robby!

Well done Robby. I imagine that is Scotty on the fiddle.

Good call :-) Thanks, I just pulled the bass back .5 on Ozone4's MB Compressor on the bottom band, from 4.7 to 4.2, a small change, but I feel like it sits a little better in the mix.

Well this was completely unexpected! Great performances. Excellent actually.

The drums seem like they're in the back of the room - I'd bring them up closer.

Oh, & loved the bass solo!

Thanks Dave, yeah on the Eagles version, the drums aren't too prominent, and I used it as a guide.  I did bring them up slightly from the 1st mix though. Thanks very much for your input!!

Great arrangement Robby... killer fiddle... Scotty?
Harmony is so fine... I'd like to hear more snare... I think it might make the midi banjo more believable... very well done...

:-) Thanks Frank, yeaup that's the Scottster. I did those harmonies like I like my women... "High and tight (and lonesome...) preferably with poor eye sight"

The performances on this are awesome.

I think a pass through a LA2A or 1176 would do these vocals proud. You can download a 10-day trial version from IK Multimedia and slap it on them.

Great stuff.... For a brief moment I was back in the states! Guess it would have to be Scotty on fiddle. Great Banjo work, though. I seem to recall you having a banjo on something else you posted. Killer slide part :)

:-) Tippity Tap, thanks man, I think we put the tree in country? I'm actually going to add some parts, going to add a dobro at the end, and maybe some more Philz... But tomorrow's Father's day, so we'll be canoeing :-) (my son and I). Happy Father's day to all dads on the Forum!!

no idea, but it sounds pretty damn professional to me, some great picking and a-fiddling, could be a little 'bigger' soundwise, but very very well balanced.

Thanks Mark, I'm working on my size ;-) I'll post a new and hopefully final mix later in the week.

Whoa... where do I start with comments here... it was that kinda' great!  I've been meaning to catch this one for days, and finally got there this morning.  Well worth the wait to hear two of my favorite players at their best.

Robby, that banjo had me going for a good part of the tune.  Great job on everything guys.  I'll be back for seconds and maybe even thirds on this one.

I'm sure I've heard this song before but it still took me 1 minute and 25 seconds to figure out that "MFer" stands for "Midnight Flyer" and not...well, you know

Anyway, the mix sounds great. Love it when you hit those harmonies...awesome.

Great fiddle by Scotty and great playing on all the other instruments by you. That Chandler sounds great...oh yea, nice piano lick in there, too!

Thanks man, coming from a musician of your caliber, I really appreciate it... I'm a fan... I'm actually going to add some things and re-post this week, some things at the end, and maybe some fills... And play with the compression and the mix. It's never ending... A sickness as anyone who really does it like you understands. Thanks again, very much.

Hey, Robby,

Very cool spin on this classic bluegrass cover, buddy.

Those vocal harmonies are really sweet!  Excellent job on all of the instrumental performances, I love the banjo and slide, and Scotty's fiddle sounds dynamite.

The mix sounds really good, especially for how much is going on throughout the song.  My only very minor suggestion would be to maybe bring your killer good vocals up just a notch, to float them over the dense mix a little bit more.  That's just my own personal preference.  When you've got the perfect voice for this song like you do, why not feature it just a little bit more?

Really nice work, Robby!
Bob
Big bad Bob! Thank you sir, it's about as far as one can get from one of your rock monsters :-) But it really was a bunch of fun, there are big ugly envelopes on those vox tracks and I did try to bring them up a bit based on your comment. I think they're sitting in there just right now.

Hi Robbie,

The new mix sounds great. The dobro is a nice subtle touch.

Really like those low notes on the Chandler.

**6/22, I just want to say that the people who are really good at this mixing and mastering stuff? My hat it off to you... "Really" And you know who you are. It is the single hardest thing for me. Many things come easily to me? Some I have to work at, but the damn mixing... I mean I do it for days/weeks... I have what will be the final mix up now. I wanted to bring the ass end up a bit more, I kept mixing it in and then out again? It's sitting where I want it now :-) And the vox :-) And that sweet fiddle :-) So much goes in to this...

People who don't do this? Have "no clue..." I have so many compressors and limiters, EQs, panners, wideners, narrowers, exciters all working together... I work in a technical field on the Internet? And I tell the Engineers I work with, what I do on the DAW is "every bit as involved and every bit as deep as what we do in the network, if not more so..."  The secrets behind getting your mix, 1. Loud, 2. Punchy, 3. Clear, 4. Separated, featuring different aspects, like the vocals, a lead instrument like Scotty's fiddle, keeping the punch in the ass end, not over driving anything? Not distorting, it is an art that requires every bit as much talent as anything we do musically IMO...  So many deep rabbit holes. The musician rabbit hole... The production rabbit hole, the engineering rabbit hole. Each deep and wide? Each presenting its own challenges...

Well I like to think I'm getting better at it :-) I am surrounded by so many talented people who inspire me. I am very very impressed by so many here, if I can impress you, I've accomplished what I've set out to do :-) And believe me when I say, "I work HARD at it..." Really hard, at my craft(s) it's not just a hobby, it is my passion, and my obsession...
-----------
I'm moving off of this project, it was aggressive. I'm working on an original tune I wrote a while back that's never been posted, and a colab with one of my favorite people :-) Look forward to it... It's going to be EPIC!

Peace.

Hey, Robby,

This new second mix REALLY sounds great!!!

Those outstanding vox and harmonies are way easier to hear, and the entire mix seems to have better instrument separation and is much cleaner sounding.  Everything can breathe nicely now in it's own space.

Well worth the extra effort, nice work, buddy!

Taylor, I fought with the ass of this song, I pushed it in? I pulled it out... I pushed it in? I pulled it out. It reminded me of that 1st long night in prison? I agree with you that it's very important. but it was a trick between too low, and too dominant? I think I solved it with the last mix :-) Thanks for your input!
