☄ Helpful
Just wanted to add - the comment "I'm sure everyone can find something useful here - providing you already know how to record a project" is on target. With the exception of the introduction, the video is not about basics as I think there's already quite a bit of material intended for people to get up and running with X1. What I wanted to provide was techniques for those who are comfortable with X1, but would like to take it further. That's also why there's a wide variety of material covered. I assumed that not all techniques would be relevant to everyone (although they were to me, which is why I came up with them!), but wanted to make sure that everyone would find techniques that would be helpful for their particular way of working with X1. That said...if for example you're not into loops, you might still want to check out the chapters on the Matrix View and loops, because once you know some of these tips you might want to get into loops. I did a seminar on loops at GearFest and some people didn't use loops because they don't stretch well - but that can often be fixed with editing so that they can stretch. Also, there's a misconception that the Matrix view is a DJ thing, but in the video, I emphasized its usefulness to songwriters, and how to integrate it with the linear tracks. I'll check back here periodically in case people have questions about any of the material - sort of "ad hoc tech support." I did see someone mention something about the dual delay technique being outstanding - but I'm not sure I put a dual delay tip in there, unless the looper counts for that. If he's referring to the virtual miking technique, I should emphasize that it does not involve delay, it's all about EQ, which is why you can take mono, turn it into convincing stereo, but collapse it back into mono again with zero phase issues. I should also emphasize (which I didn't in the video) that while the example uses acoustic guitar, and that's probably the "killer app" for that technique, I've used it with several other instruments as well, including synthesizer - it's great with pads. Glad y'all are digging the video (now that you can play it, LOL)!

rtucker55 Hi Chappel, Yes, VLC works nicely here. I just tested the Craig Anderton video using the VLC media player on Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Actually, it works better than the quicktime player on my under powered laptop. ( I was also experiencing some issues with this video and QT, but figured it was due to a very under powered laptop) You can also see or select the chapters by clicking on the 'playback' menu pad, moving your cursor down to 'chapter', and the list appears. Kind regards, Rick I have yet to find a Windows video format that it can't play. It is highly configurable and stable and I use also use it to watch DVD movies. Just remember to check the Update Now feature in the Help menu because it doesn't automatically update itself and they do come out with periodic updates.

Thanks Craig, yur work shines on us all. I was VERY impressed by the Matrix View chapter and will be looking into using it much more and look forward to an in depth video on it... going slowly and covering much more The chapter on looping with the Sonitus delay left me dazed and confused... I will watch it several more times until it sinks in but the first time, it went right over my head. Not your fault, I just need to study it until I get it. That is as far as I have gotten and so far am very pleased. I had much more important things last night and today, both my grand daughters spent the night and day and the 8yo is staying over again and going to work with me tomorrow. These things cannot be put off and trump everything else in life. I am buying her a set of electronic drums soon and we are going to record something together, maybe a short Christmas CD. Again, thanks for a GREAT resource. I am a relative newbie, tough I have fiddled around with Sonar for years I have never had the time or proper hardware to really use it... now I do. I will certainly let you know if anything from my semi informed POV seems to be brilliant or lacking but remember that if I ask for more of something that I as not complaining... I REALLY appreciate everything!!! OK, time to go read Jack and the Beanstalk! Julien

I bought my first book by Craig Anderton at the Cal Arts bookstore in 1983. It was on how to build little electronic effects devices. The man has been around for a long time, and I have always considered him a musician's best friend. I got this video and would get anything he does in the future. Garrigus is another well respected hard worker whose videos I will buy. I have the advance Groove 3 video as well. The more advanced now the better for me. Craig Anderton - in the Cal Arts Bookstore in 1983. THAT's a memory folks. Thank you Craig for years of service. Richie Miller Cal Arts 1983-4

Middleman Anderton If he's referring to the virtual miking technique, I should emphasize that it does not involve delay, it's all about EQ, which is why you can take mono, turn it into convincing stereo, but collapse it back into mono again with zero phase issues. Actually I was refering to the part about creating delays beyond 4 seconds. The looper section, even though I don't use loop recording. Hope that is clear. Aha, gotcha. Thought maybe I hadn't made it clear the Virtual Miking technique didn't involve delays. But as you're into the looper...you'll discover as you go through the video that a lot of these techniques are intended to be complementary. My favorite use for the looper is to create long, complex, organic guitar pads. Then I use the Perfect Pad Looping technique to turn them into loops, then impart rhythms to them with the techniques described in the chapter on Analyst Frequency-Selective Envelopes and/or the chapter on Sidechaining for rhythmic effects. The combination can create some really interesting rhythmic beds. I'm hoping that people regard the chapters in the video not just as complete unto themselves, even though they are, but as components that can be combined with other components to create something new and different. Frankly, I haven't tried all the combinations myself...but I want to try convolving a Timbre-Shifted Loop with the same loop, but unshifted, using the Perfect Space Sound Design technique. That's one reason I'm glad this thread exists - if I find out new tricks using these techniques, I have a place to let people know about them. I'm sure I'll learn some things from y'all as well! .

I will certainly let you know if anything from my semi informed POV seems to be brilliant or lacking. Julien Regarding the looper, the key is that you have to use your audio interface to go "outside" Sonar to create the feedback loop. Try duplicating the steps in the chapter and if you get stuck, let me know where you got stuck, and I'll walk you through it. It is kinda deep, no question about it. Very cool about the grand daughters!! My daughter plays guitar, I didn't push her in that direction at all but one day I was playing this ambient thing with a Variax and Vetta, she walked in, her jaw dropped, and she said "I want to be able to make that sound." She was hooked. Would of course be very interested on any opinions. I already found someone's comment about liking unconventional applications of conventional tools very helpful...I'd never really thought of it in those terms, but it verbalizes/defines a topic that I agree is worth pursuing.

In my original post I didn't want to give anything away that was in the video Your use of Pro Channel as a Phase Shifter and/or a Wah was great! You went deep enough to explain how those older effects actually worked then applied it to the Pro Channel! That comment might also apply to your use of the Percussion Strip on the Bass. As for the virtual miking, it was very clear that is was all EQ/Pan driven. I've already got it in a new project and it sounds great! That in itself was worth the cost of the video - in my opinion!

As for the virtual miking, it was very clear that is was all EQ/Pan driven. I've already got it in a new project and it sounds great! That in itself was worth the cost of the video - in my opinion! Cool! Here's another trick with the virtual miking. If you're miking a piano, it's hard to do in mono because of the sheer size. But what you can do is use the virtual miking technique with a mono room mic for the piano, then use the stereo imaging trick to re-inforce the imaging. You'll also want to add a slight delay to one of the mics to make the reverb effect more "stereo." BTW - with the "EQ phase shifter," make sure you also try combining sharp peaks with sharp notches. I didn't want to mention any effects by name in the video, but I've been able to get a dead ringer emulation of the Electro-Harmonix Polyphase using that technique. Basically, think of the peaks as adding the equivalent of positive feedback in a phase shifter. As to the wah...it's also possible to do the same thing with the VC-64, and not have to copy a track because the VC-64 allows for parallel paths. But, the VC-64 doesn't have the Pure/Modern/Vintage options, or the Saturation, which can have a major effect on the wah sound. I probably should have mentioned that the Saturation combined with wah can do some cool vintage sounds. If I do another video, I would definitely include some VC-64 tricks. It has a lot of hidden features.

Just to reiterate, and this is in the requirements, QuickTime is the recommended way to watch the video. We tested this out on a bunch of players and devices including Windows Media Player and VLC which work. Some of those players don't support chapters but we thought this was the best way to present the video. On a related note, this video project was really a great experience. It was an honor to work with Craig Anderton, who has a wealth of knowledge. I hope everyone enjoys the video and if the demand is there we would love to do a second version because I know Craig has a ton more information to share with the world. Thanks Craig and thanks to everyone who downloaded this video. Thanks, Andrew Rossa Director of Marcom Cakewalk, Inc.

John T I'm quite tempted to buy this. Is there a full list of the contents anywhere? If you have any questions about what's in the video ("What do you mean, 'vintage phase shifter effects' with the ProChannel? Is that a typo or something?"), feel free to ask. Also if you need additional info about the applications, or if anything isn't clear, I'd be happy to help. I really want this video to help Sonar users, and hopefully, inspire them as well. Also thanks to everyone for the props . When you spend so much time on a project, it's gratifying to know that people enjoy it! I do have a favor to ask, though: If you have any favorite chapters from the video, it would be great to know what they are. If I see a trend, then if there's a second video, I can try to include techniques along the same lines that people find helpful. In fact, if you'd like to see an emphasis on particular topics (e.g., mastering, tracking, mixing, whatever), that would be very useful information too.
