I just bought it but cant seem to find a way of going to a specific chapter as it seems to be in one long video, does that mean i have to spend time trawling through the whole thing to find what im looking for or am i missing something?

Do you have the capability to bookmark the video?  I intend to watch it from beginning to end, marking along the way - that way I don't miss anything and can reference back to stuff.

Hi Damon ,
I use  QuickTime Player  and can go to the  different chapters on the fly :-) On the right side of the timeline in the player there is a box , click and all the chapters will be shown .

I think the first 5 minutes of the video might be a bit too novice for many long term users but overall I liked the video. There were many ideas I had not encountered before and I thought he did a good job covering those. The automated EQ section was very good. The dual delay piece was exceptional. I am not a loops guy so some of the material was irrelevant to me but I think for the vast majority of people you will find 3 or 4 gems in there.

QuickTime or iTunes is the best way to watch it to get the chapter menu. Unfortunately some other players don't support that. We'll work on getting up a free preview.

Like Middleman says - the first 5 minutes is pretty basic, and to me looks more than an X1 Advertisement, but once that is over you get 95 minutes of solid instruction.

If a user is having a problem figuring out how to record a track in X1, then this is not the video for you. For the most part it covers intermediate to advanced techniques and assumes you already know the basics. This is put together really well, and moves along at a nice pace.

As with any instructional videos, everyone is bound to find certain sections redundant because they already know that area - but that doesn't mean we will all find the same sections redundant regardless of our level of experience.  For instance - I thought I knew my way around the smart tool until I watched this video. I just picked up at least 2-3 new tricks I wasn't aware off. His "unconventional use" of "conventional tools" is what I enjoyed most, and I especially liked the virtual miking segment. Since I have a less than perfect room to record in, that will come in handy.

I'm sure everyone can find something useful here - providing you already know how to record a project.

Grrrrr.... Help....

So, I purchased this and tried to view it on my xp3 32-bit machine using Media Player 11... M4V files are a no go via Media player 11 (I do not use QuickTime nor do I use iTunes).

Took it downstairs to my i7-970 Windows 7 Home Pro 64-bit  machine (which is main music dev machine and is unplugged from the internet).... now I can hear the file but receive no picture, and to make matters worse, the audio continues to play but the Windows Media player locks up and I have to use the Ctl-Alt-Del method to kill the process.

Anyone (encountered this?) got a fix to this (no, I will not put Quicktime or iTunes on that machine).  It's system if pristine and a I don't need Apple's crap insisting on running in the background.

Help!

I do not use QuickTime

Jim, you'll benefit from installing QuickTime on your computer.  It provides codecs for video that you otherwise wouldn't have, for instance.  Best to cover your bases with media players, so you can do anything you want.

Elaborate please...

I've had no problem that I know of but I have learned that sometimes I think everything is as good as it is supossed to be... until I find out it isn't. I once was using some new equipment (not recording equipment but sensitive detection equipment). I was determined to learn to use it. The reputation was that it was noisy by nature so I was prepared for some noise... I decided to deal with it, work through the noise, and make it work for me. Finally after three weeks of mind numbing aggrivation but some decent results I called the manufacturer and asked if what I was going through was normal, they told me to touch and wiggle a certain connection. When I did it went nuts. This connection had been loose all along. Though it had worked for those first weeks... it worked MUCH better with that connection tight.

So... is i-tunes or QT doing anything in the background that might be degrading to my DAW experience without me realizing that things could be better? Why is it so important to you? Should it be important to me? Or do you just not like Apple.

Thanks,
Julien

Hi Chappel,

Yes, VLC works nicely here.

I just tested the Craig Anderton video using the VLC media player on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.  Actually, it works better than the quicktime player on my under powered laptop. ( I was also experiencing some issues with this video and QT, but figured it was due to a very under powered laptop)

You can also see or select the chapters by clicking on the 'playback' menu pad, moving your cursor down to 'chapter', and the list appears.

Kind regards,
Rick

You don't have to install quicktime or itunes to get the quicktime codec... Do a search for "Quicktime alternative". It just installs the codecs for quicktime, but not all the "Apple is the ruler of your machine" crap. iTunes is the most bloated piece of software that you cannot get to work fast even when you poke it in the rear bits with a hot poker. It is so slow on windows (but, strangely enough, a lot faster on a mac - I suspect a conspiracy here) you much rather want to pull all your hears out with your bare hands than import a 9000+ MP3 song library in it.
And quicktime installs this thing in the taskbar. Remove it, and it comes back. Which is why I don't install it...
edit: You can also use a converter such as Xilisoft video converter to convert it to another format of course.

Windows Media Player I would suggest is a standard player.  Why would CW market something that doesn't play in it???  Odd. So I'll pass on this video.

Yes, when I got my new DAW I certainly didn't reinstall iTunes; it's both bloated and intrusive.

h.264/MP4 is a standard codec and easy to find on the internet. It is in wide use all over the internet. Real Player provides this Codec, but I find that far more intrusive than iTunes and QT. I have never tried the free VLC player, but I have heard it works well. Often, once you install a player like VLC - Windows Media may (not always) pick up on that codec as well. (Windows Media may still tell you it cannot play the file - but if you ask it to try (which is an option) it quite often can)

Cake should likely release a Windows Media version as well - since Sonar is a Windows only DAW, but I am quite happy to have this high def video in the current format.

Just my 2 cents.
