Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk]
thepianist53 IMO, selected clips don't show the MIDI data as well, contrast is off, to me. I'm going to see if I can tweak this. it's the only criticism I have so far of the new theme, which mostly I like.
I don't see any difference with how selected MIDI clips are displayed with the Tungsten theme. Can you elaborate? Perhaps you have some custom colors that are affecting this?
Noel, Attached are screenshots of selected MIDI clips on the Mercury and Tungsten themes using the Normal color scheme in Preferences. On my system, the MIDI notes in the tracks 1, 4, and 5 are nearly invisible in the Tungsten theme. My monitor is calibrated and color managed, so my contrast and brightness are not turned up all the way as most monitors are set by default. I assume the theme designs were completed on a color managed monitor. Mercury Tungsten Hope this helps, Ron

Go to the colour section in preferences. There's a drop down with several options like dark, bright, mono, etc. If you change this setting it will change the contrast for several things in the track view. I think that will help you.

Noel, for me the contrast between the selected clip background and midi data in that clip is somehow off a bit, hard to explain, but there wasn't enough contrast for me. It's as if the Midi data I was used to seeing was harder to see or somehow didn't look sharp enough, which caused some eye fatigue. And I had no customization of colors going on, just using the new theme as it was displayed upon my update. However, I was able to use a custom slider to increase the contrast a bit and this helps me out, so it's not a problem, really. Keep in mind my eyesight isn't all that great, to be honest, but I never really noticed this as an issue before. Thanks.

Btw, I love the default theme (except that it's named after a toxic chemical element). I'm re-realizing how full of life it is (with full-colored strips). I prefer the blue/black contrast over orange/black. Love the beautiful Control Bar especially. But I'm happy that many are happy with the new dark theme. At least I no longer have to see some people complaining about the GUI being gray.

I love the new theme too. The only thing that I would have personally enjoyed better was to have the transport buttons (and other buttons too) given a 3D beveled look. Some people say that's been overdone already, but I think the 3D buttons look so much better than just plain flat. But I'm just nitpicking. The new theme is great and when I first opened up Sonar and saw it, I just sat there and looked at it for awhile with a big smile on my face. Does anyone know if there will be a customization utility for making your own UI. (Not just changing colors) but to create entirely new buttons and levers (like 3D)?

Andrzej Salm I hate to spoil the party, but I am not entirely sold on the new look. I mean, I like it a lot and those orange buttons are great. But, adding a colour to a track results in a mere narrow strip at the bottom in console view which renders the feature rather useless to be honest. It would be great if at least the volume slider (and possibly the gain and pan dials) would change the colour too. It's not of much help as it is.
I was trying to find the documentation that I read when I installed, but can't seem to remember. It's been a long weekend. It stated that in the future, all of the themes will have the full color strips, including Tungsten. My personal request for the future is for the fx menus to match the interface instead of being white. Looking forward to the full reveal for editing and creating themes.

I think it's fantastic overall, but count me in as one who'd like to see a *bit* more color in the console - fader cap would be fine, or an option to color the track-name-frame as suggested above, or possibly even the icon frame, something like that. Just to make it a bit quicker to quickly identify tracks or groups of tracks based on color. I'm also hoping we can get access to some way of building or altering themes at some point...

On cakewalk's rollout page , under the "Coming in Spring 2016" in the "UI Themes" section, it states there:
"Plus, we’ll provide tools so you can easily design and use your very own custom-made UI skins."
So if I read that right, we will indeed be able to make custom made skins - and I am hoping that includes the ability to return the track colours as they appear in the "Mercury" theme.

Yep, unfortunately that is what happens when you remove all depth cues. In the middle of a long and tiring session, wondering why you have a headache, try to switch to the Mercury theme to get instant relief. Your mind will thank you because it no longer needs to work overtime trying to separate UI elements based on colors. Instead you will "get it for free" as you mind does the element separation subconsciously. Tweaking the colors isn't going to solve the problem, maybe just mask it a little bit more and keep the headache away for a little bit longer. The reason I'll be sticking to the Mercury theme is because I get this concept. I really wish today's UI designers also understood this.

SilkTone This trend started when Microsoft brought their Metro theme from Windows Phone over to the desktop in Windows 8. Flat themes might work on a phone where the UIs are much more simple and there are no overlapping windows. So all of this is based on a phone that lost the platform wars and rumors are MS is giving up on it (I say as someone that still has a Windows Phone - so please... I'm not a hater)
It's definitely not dead. Although it might seem so. They are just not focusing on phones so much this year but look out for a Surface Phone next year that can also run Droid apps.

Personally, I got over the track strip colors rather quickly this weekend. Since I only record for as a living, I have pretty rigid ways when it comes to grouping tracks together. After only one weekend, Mercury with the color track strips looks almost clown-ish to me now. And I was a "track color" power user. So for me, it's goodbye Mercury. And here's a couple of reasons.
I definitely understand those who currently use only one video monitor, it (the colors) could be a big deal. But because I've been using dual monitors (many years), I am able see the full screens of both the Track and Console View simultaneously. It would've been harder (for me) to accept Losing track colors on a single monitor. I say this because I can see the track color in the waveform on one monitor and the colors on the other. A border around the bottom as was suggested is a good idea IMHO. But nothing more than that.
A far greater reason for my digging the Tungsten theme, At 63 years old, diabetic and on dialysis, my vision is somewhat compromised in one eye. The change from the light Mercury to the dark Tungsten has been a Godsend.Literally, my experience working in Sonar has increased probably 50% both functionally and asethically. So there's that.
Lastly, because I do record others, my software is on display constantly. Tungsten has a stronger professional look/feel to it. And that's a factor when other people pay you to make records for them. Additional control over the UI would.will be much welcomed at my tiny little bungalow
So, rock on SONAR, rock on.
Anyway just my 2¢...
Earl PS - Good on ya' for the lifetime deal!

here's what I would like to see in future themes: - console themes: for example a replica of the Rupert Neve 5088 - different colored strips. who says the strip has to be one color. - adjustable resolution of and more customizable strips. to me the replicating of past consoles could be a great direction for sonar. not only changing the color but the way the strips are designed. / inline EQ more defined square MSR buttons. it would be the future of DAW's. it is now more evident that users, being musicians like to be creative in more ways then one. so why not let them be. bring on an editor.
