ORIGINAL: attium88 I envy you. I never had the opportunity to play through the real amps though have always wanted to. I think abou the best amp I ever played through, expensive that is, was a Fender Twin. Loved that. Oh yeah, and a Peavey 5150 full stack. That was a monster! As for the real Marshalls, nothing:( Go down to your local Guitar Center. They will let ya do anything. Hey are you in redding or outside of town? Hey Doc, I am in the heart of Redding, CA. Too hot over here. Well not today. Its cloudy. . . Kinda odd if ya ask me. Well I asked as I know the area. I played the circuit during the '80's and had been in Redding a few times. Up until 4 years ago I lived in suburb of Sacramento. So I know what you mean about the Central Valley heat. It can be stifling. I asked if you were in or out of town as that can make a difference in being able to crank up an amp without the neighbors wanting to hang you from the nearest tree. About the Guitar Center thing. It is so true. Especially if you manage to become friends with the store manager or guitar department manager.

Bryan, I would seriously look into the Toneport UX2 as Strummy mentioned. You can add the other packages as you go along to get what you want rather than what you may not need or desire. The additional mic inputs will allow you to track vocals and other instruments including acoustics where the TonePort DI will not. The Gold bundle does not however come with Ampfarm which is a propellerhead product resold through Line 6. It will come with GearBox, which is the software engine that supports the Amplifier models and FX models along with preamp models for vocals. Additionally you will have VST plug-in support which will allow you to change the tone of the guitars on the fly. The UX 2 will come with the base package but at least you won't be looking for a different interface on down the line as you try to add in acoustics or vocals.

Nicely explained Doc - those are some pretty sweet offers on those bundles though.

Let's just say I have to keep my volume down as low as possible, otherwise you can hear it echo throughout the whole place. Then you'll start hearing the dogs barking. lol!

Thanks a bunch guys. Yeah, it does make sense to get the hardware portion of it now (with the UX2) so as to use it for other purposes that come. I will be needing to record vocals so it will pay off then for sure. Thanks again everyone!!

Thinking back to your 'Next Step Up' thread Bryan, if you do get a MIDI compatible piece of Cakewalk software, you may want to consider the TonePort KB37. Doc has one of these so he'll probably give you a quick insight into what MIDI capabilities the KB37 has - it may be another bit of future-proofing you might want to consider.

Ok, you guys got me thinking again and I'm going to play the devil's advocate here - aside of the possible need of midi and just comparing the GX and the UX2; why not just use an XLR to 1/4 in. mic cable with the GX for vocal work? I think I have like three of them packed away somewhere . . .

Good question Bryan - Doc will know the technical stuff here so I'll back away. I do use both the XLR input [for my dynamic mic] and the ¼" instrument input [for my condenser mic] on the UX2 depending on whicj I'm using. The +48V phantom power on the UX2 might be an issue if you need it for your mics Bryan. The UX2 also allows you to input two separate signals into GT3 at the same time - should you wish to record a mic and a guitar together, for example.

I personally like to play and sing at the same time. That's why I went for the UX2. There is only one plug-in for the GX Look at it this way: A Honda Civic is a good efficient friendly car. And you can buy packages in what they call EX, LX ETC. But If you step it up a bit, you can buy the Honda Accord. More powerful, better engine. And still have those packages in the LX or Ex or DX. . . But then again. . . I like Civics better. . . I drive one LOL! Im just playing man, i dont know a thing about the difference between the GX and the UX2

Yeah, I only record one instrument at a time and I use dynamic mics for vocals so I may be fine with the GX and save a few $$. MF has them on sale now for $49. Heck, even the UX1 is only $79.

Hey there ya go. I am just to dang lazy to record over a track again. Plus I notice there is still a tiny bit of latency when I record a song even with my UX2. Instead of having to deal with that issue. I just record at the same time and if I don't get it the way I want it the first time, I just redo it. Everyone has their own way of doing things. That must be a great job to work at by the way. I'm a big fan of Honda just for how insanely cheap it is to fill a tank.

Hey guys, I hope you don't mind my putting my two cents in. I use a presonus and like the way I can mix the input signal with the main mix of the DAW for a zero latency monitoring mix. Does the toneport line have a feature like that? I have to admit that the price point for toneport is insane. I bought an alesis multimix first because it was way cheap when it came out but I had too many other issues with it so I bought the presonus. For value though it looks like your way has a lot of merit. But, you guys know there are other interfaces available, right? Just pokin' fun. These days it seems there are just too many options and having a large group of people all saying the same thing helps to clear the water a bit.

Hi Cyrus The Toneport's ToneDirect monitoring allows for virtually latency free monitoring of the playback mix and the signal being recorded. The monitoring lets you hear all the effects you've got running in Gearbox as well, which is a great boon. BTW, your two cents are most welcome here - thanks for the input. Steve

Bryan, The Gx is great if you are only using condensers. But let me turn you onto a very good low cost mic. The MCA SP-1. With a $150 mod from Jim Williams you get similar performance to a AKG 414C. The Mic is a condenser. Have I tickled you into considering XLR connections with phantom power? The TonePort KB37 supports MIDI via the USB port. It does not have a MIDI out or through. I actually use a different interface for all of my keyboard work. The nice thing though is that it has an input for two momentary switches for transport control or switching (I am currently looking for a low cost candidate for this feature) and an input for an expression pedal (which I will have in my hands on Friday) for control of the Wah & Volume in the FX Junkie package. These are not available in the other Toneports except for the UX8. You'll spend more but you'll be farther ahead. CJlinus, The largest difference you have is that the Presonus gear utilizes firewire for communication and there fore relieves the CPU from additional processing. The Toneport utilizes the USB port requiring the CPU to handle the protocol conversion. This usually happens in the same memory range as the video card on Laptops and where video is supported from the motherboard. This usually causes the user to forgo dual video monitors. You actually have a superior set up in that sense. At this time I am considering the usage of firewire for my mobile system and Presonus along with Focusrite are at the top of my list. The problem of course is the cost. $500+

Gearbox which is the software from Line 6 that came with my UX2 has built in features including condensing the mic. I am using an SM58 for the time being which as we know is generally an all around live performance mic. Anyways, I got it down pretty good to the sound I wanted to hear, the volume, and got rid of that fuzz that would keep happening until I used the program to condense it. Its not perfect but it gets me by and sounds good until I can purchase a condensor mic.
