Here's one I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned: SCSI
How'd that ever get to be pronounced 'scuzzy'?
For those that don't remember: SCSI (small computer system interface) is a computer interface spec.

I did a little digging, and apparently Harman International still makes DOD.  (I thought the brand had been absorbed into Digitech.)  Anyway, I always thought it was called D-O-D, because it was either "Department of Distortion", or "Department of Defense", because the pedals were American-made and housed in all-metal casings.

I usually pronounce it C-S-I, after the David Caruso vehicle.

Or N-C-I-S, after the Mark Harmon vehicle.

Hi Mike-

I say D-A-W because it's not an acronym. An acronym is a word that is spelled by using the first or first few letters of each word

How is it clearly not an acronym: "Digital Audio Workstation" = DAW? Seems very similar to RADAR to me. The diff. b/w an initialism and an acronym seems pretty subjective and based on convention. For example, I don't think many people pronounce "USA" "oosa" (except when talking about the American TV channel, oddly enough!), but I've heard "DAW" both ways. I pronounce it as a single word when I pronounce it at all.

Re S/PDIF, I might be alone in this, but I pronounce it "SPEE-DIF". I must've heard it that way somewhere along the line, and it stuck.

The TV channel?  I watch USAHD more than any other network, and it's always "U-S-A" or "U-S-A-H-D" to me, never "oosa", "yoosa", or "(y)oosa-hud".  Remember that we're talking about the home channel of Burn Notice, here, so have some respect.

In our neck of the woods (I don't know exactly what that means in context), it's "MID-EE", but I've also heard "ME-DEE". I believe that was on a DVD tutorial, so maybe that doesn't count. I'm also still waiting to hear "MY-DIE"!

Burn Notice, In Plain Sight, and Royal Pains all get a lot of time on my TVs, along with plenty of reruns of House and NCIS.  If it's on "yoosa-hud", I watch it... except for WWE Smackdown, I guess.

Makes you wonder, is it "W-W-E", or is it "wee"?

Sheesh have I been saying it wrong all these years? I've always spelled it out D.A.W. But lately I've been seeing product videos where they say 'daw' (rhymes with paw).

Even weirder, I'm hearing some people refer to S/PDIF as 'spiddif'. Is that right?? Man I'm out of touch.

I say DAW = "daw" ....in one word!
I say S/PDIF ) = S, pidi-F     ... in one flow and word

Regards
Freddie

I've never watched it -- the teasers didn't appeal to me. I can DVR the reruns, though, I guess. You recommend it?

Thanks-

Royal Pains is a good recommendation if you've ever fantasized about recasting Gregory House as a friendly, young Jewish doctor in the Hamptons.  It's an hour-long fish-out-of-water dramedy where Mark Feuerstein discovers all manner of normal people and quirky characters among the locals.  His brother Evan, love interest doctor Jill, and physician's assistant Divya round out the regulars.  I won't claim that it's a great show, but it amuses me, and it's better than the teasers.

Thanks!

Yes, and I was privileged to know Dick Hyman, who worked with him closely, and it's definitely "Moo-g".

That's funny, I had a 5th grade music teacher who beat it into our heads that it's "Mow-g". So I'm stuck with it.

How about Neutrik

But Bob Moog pronounces it Mow-g.

At 7 seconds he says "MiniMow-g"

Hi Eric-

Then Mr. Hyman mispronouced it or (more likely) I misremembered it. I could've sworn it was "Moog", which I guess could be pronounced a few different ways, but sure enough, if he himself pronounces it "Mowg", that settles it.

Thanks-

-Susan

P.S. I think it was in fact "Mowg", thinking way back to when I was a kid. Sorry, it stuck in my head as "Moog", but I bet you're right.

I say tomato, you say tomato, lets call the whole thing off.

Hang on, that doesn't quite work...

Which highlights something I just realised. I have no idea how Beagle pronounces A-so.

Being English, I would pronounce a short A, like 'are'.
Beagle, being US based, most likely has a longer A sound than I would, like 'aye'.

Just a thought.
