Do you say D.A.W. or daw?
Sheesh have I been saying it wrong all these years? I've always spelled it out D.A.W. But lately I've been seeing product videos where they say 'daw' (rhymes with paw). Even weirder, I'm hearing some people refer to S/PDIF as 'spiddif'. Is that right?? Man I'm out of touch.

"spiddiff" seems to be the accepted pronunciation. At least, I've heard it that way far more often than spelling out S-P-D-I-F, which is a mouthful. Personally, I cannot bring myself to use "spiddiff", preferring the tongue-twister version. But then, I also say "hashish" rather than any of its monosyllabic alternatives. As for the other thing, I say "computilator". A contraction of computer and mutilator.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I say "DAW", or sometimes inadvertently, "DUH". I don't think I've ever heard anybody spell it out (D-A-W). S/PDIF - I've always said "S-P-DIF", but I hear people call it "spiddif" quite regularly - that always sounds weird to me. Here's another one for you - when naming off a website, do you say "W-W-W", or "World Wide Web"? Have you ever noticed that it takes three times as many syllables to "shorten it" to the abbreviation?

Wow, well thanks for setting me straight, guys. My duh doesn't have spiddiff jacks. It only has firewire and usbah. Guess I should get on the dubyadubyadubya and buy a new one. Eh... I like computilator.

I say D-A-W because it's not an acronym. An acronym is a word that is spelled by using the first or first few letters of each word such as RADAR or NORML. Daw is not a word. It's actually Initialism. It's a fine line but I'm sticking to it. :-) As far as S/PDIF goes, I have no say on that because I have never said it. But I guess I would still go with S-P-D-I-F for the same reason as listed above. Mike

Do you mean you actually know people in real life that would even know what you're talking about if you said DAW? Cause I don't think I do. :-) I've always said 'DAW' in my mind when I think it or read it cause that made sense. I'm afraid I did smile when I heard someone call it his DOW (on the phone).

To any of my professional associates, it's simply HAL. "Civilians" wouldn't know a daw from a maw, so around them I just call it my workstation. They seem to get it....

I'm with mamabear on that one. When I talk to people, I say "digital audio workstation". Then sometimes I'll add "or DAW for short".

It's actually Initialism. Not if you say 'DAW', then it becomes an acronym. Only if you insist on D.A.W.

Scott in his unboxing video is the first I've heard say it as separate letters - D A W. I use the term computer recording system as it's a bit more descriptive to the general public. To tell the truth, I don't think I've ever heard a human in a face to face meeting actually use the term DAW or the letters D A W. It's usually: what software do you use for recording? or what computer do you use - pc or Mac?

Yes, I've never heard DAW used face to face either...only in phone conversations with other forumites. I just tell my friends (in real life) that I compose music on a computer. And I sometimes mention my studio (***laugh..cough..cough***--a corner of the utility room...but I've gotta call it something!) To those 2-3 I've met that might know what I'm talking about we compare computer programs. One had Sonar but never used it.

I used SAW(Software Audio Workshop) in the early days. We called it "saw". These day, I usually say DAW to the few people I know that are into recording. I guess I'd say Digital Audio Workstation for the uninitiated, but it hasn't come up lately. D.A.W. sounds like the name of a union.

Yall make a good point. Is there really any need to say the word at all? 'Civilians' won't know what it means either way. 'Veterans' already assume you're talking about a DAW unless you specify you're on a Fostex 4-track. When talking to people in person, I've always called it my 'rig', 'setup', or 'machine'. I know a crazy old dude who insists on calling it 'the TV'

To me, it's a "daw", like Richard Dawson or Dawson's Creek. The consumer digital interface is "S-P-diff". While we're at it, remember the guitar pedals that are all Digitech now, how some of them used to be called DOD? Was that "dod" or "D-O-D"?
