Does anybody use Virtual Bassist in Sonar 7?
I installed the Steinberg Virtual Bassist program and it seems to work fine when running as standalone, but when I load the VST plugin for it into Sonar 7.0.1 as a soft synth, it crashes Sonar unless I uncheck the box for loading the First softsynth audio output track. But even if I add an audio track later and select Virtual Bassist as the input, it crashes Sonar then. Has anyone ever used this program in Sonar? I am unsure whether it worked in Sonar 6 (I can't remember if I tried using it as a VST when I had 6 running), but I don't want to go through the hassle of installing Sonar 6 just to see if it works with that. Since it's a Steiny program, I wouldn't be surprised if it only works with Cubase. I haven't had much luck with Steiny lately. GRRRRRRRR!

Virtual Bassist is a buggy VST and I would strongly recommend not using it. you'll get corruption galore

Just loaded it up here and no crash. All of the defaults were selected (Midi track, audio, etc.) When you load it up are you getting any specific crash error messages that you can save? These would be critical in helping determine to root cause of the crash.

Personally, I don't care for VB. I, too, have noticed some stability issues when using this plug. The bass patches in the Groove Synth are much better. If you upgrade to Dimension Pro, the bass patches there are superb.

The error message wasn't very specific in nature, Simeon, but I'll try it again tonight to see what it says. I tried it several times, after rebooting, after reinstalling VB, and still the same crash and error message every time. I'll let you know tomorrow what the exact error message is--thanks for your help. I am REALLY starting to hate Steinberg! Groove Agent 3 is also problematic for me, but it doesn't immediately crash every time like VB. All my other plugins work fine.

Agreed, trouble with Virtual Bassist here, too. Just can't trust Steinberg's products anymore (and really haven't since I left Cubase SX at version 2 -- Yamaha ownership hasn't helped one bit, actually worse in my opinion). And, unfortunately, I'm developing the same attitude towards Native Instruments... used to be so stable and reliable... what's going on? On the other hand, I can't say enough what a pleasure it has been to work with Cakewalk products, and more importantly the people who create and support them. Thanks, Cake, for great products and great support.

Thanks, crash, there's strength in numbers--maybe Cakewalk will come to the table and admit there's a problem. I am considering going back to Sonar 6 until 7 is more bug-free. Why some people don't have any problems and some do with basically the same hardware is a mystery. Simeon, here's the error message I get: A fatal error has occurred. Module c:\windows\system32\ntdll.dll Address: 7C911C48: 0582E3E8:0582#420 As a result of this error SONAR is about to exit abnormally. Should SONAR attempt to save a recovery copy of your work? (I hit "no" to that and then...) SONARPDR.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Several people have been getting a similar crash and message with other VST's. Judging from what I've read on Crash's post, it sounds like these crashes didn't occur in Sonar 6.

ORIGINAL: brufus@earthlink.net Simeon, are you using Sonar 7 or 6?--just double checking. Using 7.01 here. I also have 6.02 installed as well. One thing to check is make sure you have the latest Syncrosoft driver installed. A lot of bugs and crashes seem to trace back to errors in the protection driver as not only the plug in is protected but the actual samples used are encrypted . You can find the latest driver here:

The cool thing about all you copies of Actual Bassist is that if you crash, it's an easy guess why...too much beer! But what's Virtual Bassist and Sonar's excuse? I haven't been pouring beer on my hard drive!

Well, Simeon, it looks like you have something there...I installed the latest SyncroSoft driver as you suggested, and I've showing improvements. After installing the driver, I called up Virtual Bassist, and it stayed up! Then I tried it again, and BAM...same old crash. So then I rebooted, and since then it has stayed up consistently. It even seems to work in 96 khz mode (before that I was thinking that maybe it only works in 44.1 khz mode). I ran into some glitches with the bass sound cutting out, but that's another matter...I don't know the program much at all at this point. Thanks for the tip...I'll see how it goes!
