Does anyone else here NEVER use console view?
Console view is an excellent view and I am sure many music creators use it religiously. (I never use staff view either) I have found that everything I do I can do in track view and thus I do not need to orient my entire song to another redundant (at least to me) view. Also I cannot edit track envelopes and such in console view which I am constantly doing. I have experimented in console view only to drop it and return back to track view. Just wondering if i was the only odd potato here... :)

I always use console view. Usually I have 1 track viewable in track view and the rest of the screen is the console, inspector and browser. My brain works better with a console and I use a small amount of space for a detailed view of the selected track.

I rarely use Console View, preferring Track View like yourself. Additionally, although I've tried to warm up to the Pro Channel, I've never been able to. I dislike the small GUIs and the inability to move the modules around the screen independently. Call me old fashioned, but I still much prefer VSTs in the FX bin... er, rack.

Doktor Avalanche What do you use for EQ?
I use the eq in prochannel exclusively (except for mastering), the built in analyzer is a must and the bands and filter cuts are quite nice. The strain on my processor is kept so low I swear by the prochannel plugs.

i don't use it either. i use the track view, inspector, and everything else in the 2nd monitor using the multidock (plugins, PR view, staff, audio editor, melodyne, etc) When i take glamour shots of my studio, I do bring up the console view. ;)

I have never ever used the console view. Although it is true that I have a hardware console (VS-700), I didn't use the console view back before I bought the hardware console. Not sure why since I grew up in studios with traditional mixing desks. I just seem to be OK working in track view.

Use the Console View especially for audio mixing. Use with a second monitor. Somewhat mandatory when a lot of Busses are involved. Using multiple monitors is great for a DAW like Sonar; at least two. PRV on one screen, Staff View on the other--you can see chords etc. the much better for the situations of folks who need to use notation in collaboration with a musical imps like me, who lives in the PRV. I started recording digital music on Korg Triton. When I got over to computers I spent 2 years being frustrated in the Event List View. I think all 'Views' 'Sub-Views' and 'Applets' along with their menus need improvement, constantly.

I never used Console View. Then I discovered the magic "D" shortcut so I could go instantly between track view and console view. For me recording is tracking - editing - mixing. I use track view for the first two, and mostly console view for mixing (with the D option so I can scurry back to track view for a quick edit if needed).

Sometime back around Sonar 7 I had an intransigent problem with automation. If I so much as touched a fader in the console view the track would get automated and I could never turn it off or modify the automation. I struggled with it for weeks and then I took a pledge to use only the track view to adjust levels, no matter how minute the adjustment. I never turned off the console, I just stopped using it. But now I've learned about busses and sends and stuff, I do use the console. And I've noticed that the old automation bug no longer exists. Plus I like to watch the lights. But I'd say I use the track view about 85% for mixing and tracking.

There are a number of things that can be done with fewer clicks from console view. For example, reviewing and tweaking multiple Pro Channel Strips at once.

Same here. Use them both continuously. As I get into mixing, it starts to get more console oriented, though. Sometimes I span the console view across both monitors during mix. I like being able to get an at-a-glance overview of so many mix parameters.

I'd heard that some weren't using console view at all, so I gave it a go. I only have an Alphatrack so no multi fader console type Control Surface. I just couldn't bend my brain around it so am back to using the console/track view about 50/50. Track/main Sonar view on left (1st) monitor and Multidock/console view on the right (2nd) monitor.

For the first few tracks, say 3 or 4, I don't bother. Once I get to a certain point I make all of my adjustments in console view. It boils down to what happens to be handiest at the moment. Now that I can float the multidock on the second display, the console view is REALLY handy

Track view for tracking and editing, then console view for final mix tweaking. I find it particularly useful on larger projects with high track counts.

Sonar was designed from the very beginning to be perfectly useful without the Console View. Thats one reason Sonar has a Buss pane. I use the CV for what it does offer on a second monitor. It gives me an overall view of the levels along with other things.

Multi monitors is optimum if you can do it. My workstation has two on the desk, and a third output runs to a receiver and 42" wall-mounted tv. So I can switch to it on the fly and see markers and changes better from anywhere, like behind the drums.... then when I'm here alone, I can use a wireless keyboard and start and stop recording without running, and rushing to get headphones on and sticks ready before the mid8 ... lol.

Agree with all of that. I think one of the key reasons these new-fangled doohickeys are a great is that they allow lots of different ways of working. There's no "correct" way, and everyone should take a lot of joy in that, I reckon.

That was so confusing with 3 posters having the same Avatars. I didn't realise the OP wasn't Mudgel and thought he had completely contradicted himself. I can see not using Console View for putting a song together, though I jump between them all the time. I couldn't mix that way though, having say 8 drum outputs to balance for instance makes sense to have the faders side by side.

I track and edit almost exclusively in Track view. Track view on monitor one, VSTs and effects open on monitor two. I agree with Craig: the 'D' key is quite handy for quickly bouncing over to a docked console view when you need to take stock of everything. In the mixing phase, I adios track view and use console view on monitor one and the second monitor gets used for VST effects. Though, I find that apart from a FabFilter delay and an instance or two of Kore, I am mixing everything through ProChannel plugs these days. All that considered, my second screen crapped out on me last week so I am going the one monitor route for a bit. I feel like I've lost a limb. I was planning for a three screen setup at the end of 2015, but I'm not sure I can hold out.

Anderton Then I discovered the magic "D" shortcut so I could go instantly between track view and console view.
When I was getting back into creating "music" again, after a few years away, I was still using S6P. I was desktop based and I had dual monitors so it was a no brainer to have the Console permanently open on my second monitor. It was the same time that X1 was released. Also, I went laptop based and I needed a sound card (Q-C) and X1 LE came with it. Quite quickly I cottoned on to the "D" shortcut and I set up my system so that when toggle to the Console it fills my window. I also use envelopes a lot, so while I am composing I will use Track view pretty much all the time, toggling to Console just to mess with levels, add sends and effects and any PC tweeking. But once it comes to mixing I want a "traditional" vertical arrangement of sliders. The sliders in Track view are simply too small, in my opinion. I know it's possible to use Inspector for that, too, but I still prefer to use Console...
