I'm only at a laptop but it sounds well balance trough the $1 speakers.
Good job, I'm glad I'm not the only other stuborn  fool around here who would also play my own drums a little out of time than use a loop.

I always thought this song was written by BW Stevenson but I just check on Wikipedia and he had only pre released it a bit before the Dawgs. I had that album of his just for that song.

Thanks Cacti, yes it was done by a couple of folks, so I think the dogs "covered it?" So technically, I did a cover of a cover. :-)

You're right....that bass line is COOL!  I wanna play that way some day.  I should practice more...

At 1:33 and 2:19 I'm hearing the vocal harmony a bit more than the melody.  Or maybe I always thought the high part was the lead.  Oh well... you're the master at this.
All in all, really sweet.  Nice pickin' for sure.

Man, that bass is cool!  :)
Janet, you are a natural musician, as am I... I'm confident with could either choose a new instrument and master it :-)

Thanks!

Hey Robby this is nice, the guitars sound really nice.  The master is sounding a little thin, it needs punch.  The drums also need some work they sound like cardbord.

On saying that the playing is excellent.

Peace Ben

Ben thanks! Your comments are well received. The current mix may be the last? Or I may do some things to the Cymbals as James stated.

Robbie,

She's off to a good start! A few more mix tweaks here and there and you'll have a winner!

Thanks Scotty, we all know the mixing is my soft white underbelly... I'm working on firming and tanning that thing?

GREAT Doggie vibe. The 12 string and the congas sound awesome on my end. Your vox and harmonies are tight . One of my favorite bass lines really holds the song together.
I guess if I had to nit I would say your drums still need some EQing. Also the instruments are a bit dry compared to your vocals.  KILLER cover!

Robby, I've been trying for days to load this song, but submissions from reverbnation have not been loading for me, lately.  Not just your song, but others as well.  I've had no trouble from any other site.  BTW, I'm using Chrome for my browser.  I'll keep trying because I always look forward to hearing your material.

All the best,

Sounds great I first posted thinking it sounded muffled, I was wrong as I had bumped some stupid button on my receiver.

Cacti, thanks for your support, I NEED IT! I'll probably do one more crack at it next week based on some additional feedback, but it sucks less than most of my mixes? So that makes me happy :-)

Your playing and singing is great (as always) but there is some punch missing to both the mix and the chorus. Mebee you wanted a more laid back version? I'm confused by the drums then. They seem like they want to move the song during the chorus but the guitars are kinda laid back.

Other than that observation you did a great job.

Ed, thanks very much for listening and commenting. I wish I could look at it from that perspective. The drums driving up to this point and then BLAMIE! And then back down? Unfortunately, it just comes pouring out of me, like a Conquistador in Mexico... I can't control it, or stop it? I wish I could (again, l ike a Conquistador.)

Hey, Robby,

Super job on this cool, revamped cover!  Great work keeping true to the original focal points while adding your own unique stamp of quality on it.

On my system, the mix sounds really nicely textured, warm, modern sounding and professional.

Excellent!

Oh, I know it's sort of a silly song...I just read about it and that first line was just a placeholder until Hoyt Axton, the lyricist, figured out what to write.  Before he could, they had recorded it and it soared to #1. (I'm sure you knew all that already...thanks to Google, now I do too) :)  Anyway, you know how I rarely know any songs you guys cover around here?  Well, I remember that one.  lol  And whether you like it or not, it would be cool to hear you sing it.

But if you want to continue in the versatility competition, you're gonna have to do opera before long, you know. ;)

Nicely done, Robby!  Not one of my favorite songs but I like the way you do it.  The whole production sounds good to me.

Hi, Robby, I got your PMs, but I also am able to access Reverbnation again, so I had a listen this morning.  As usual, your vocals take centerstage, and they are well suited for this song.  I was expecting a little more dynamic tension on the bridge near the end of the song which I recall from the Three Dog Night version.  However, this doesn't detract from the song, it's just a slightly different arrangement.  Again, very well mixed and performed.  BTW, I enjoy visiting your site from time to time.  You're a good promoter for CW.

All the best,
Lynn

Well I wouldn't claim to be one of the mixmasters whom I respect so much? :-) But at least people have not said my mix ****s *ss?  And for that? I am exceedingly happy!

My goal is to attempt to get better at the mixing aspect. I can do many other things well, and some things really well. But my soft white underbelly has always been "the mix..." So if I'm starting to figure that out? Then my nipples are like party hats! :-D

I always liked the Doobie Brothers. This song is one of my old favorites. I think you did a great job on it. I can hear that bass even in my earbuds. You could make the mix slightly hotter if you want to make it similar to some others but it came through well here with my volume up halfway.

I was  afraid to click your title after reading it lol.

Nice job.  I don't know the original but this was great.  I did pick out a bit of strange phasing on the lead vocals, particularly when they are more exposed in the first minute.  Not sure if this is an effect, or the result of the tracking/doubling.  Good, cosy sounding mix.  I know you played the drums manually, but there's a few places where the syncopation could be tightened up a bit ot make it a little more punchy.

I'll definitely have a few more listens - thanks.

Well, Kev gave me the advice to EQ the drums? So I started there... But then I increased the pressure on the limiter, did things to the snare, and the drums overall re-EQed them, changed their compression and limitting, EQ'ed the background vox, changed some panning, changed like a ****load of things. I think it sounds better/done?

Either way, I'm probably not going to do more on, unless someone I really respect cries foul.

One of these days? One of those guys is going to say, "That'll do pig, that'll do..."

My final .wav *I think it's sexy :-)"  It has volume, but retains dynamics?  I could make it a condom? But I like to use those for other things...

Yeah, I just listened to it several times. I think I'm "starting" to get this mix stuff down? :-)

"Starting too..." It's funny, when I revisited this, and started tweaking things? I was like wait, what about this? And this? And that?

The whole "mixing thing..." I would really love to hire someone who's really good at it? But they'd have to work for, Hummmm.... Well, let's just say they wouldn't be willing to do the job for what I am willing to offer?"

But I would rather envision, I would rather create? I would rather play, I would rather record... The mixing part is the most critical to the overall success? But to me, it is the least enjoyable, because it is the part that is the hardest (to me?)

I just want to be a musical God... And have Goddesses mix my music, and feed me grapes and fan me? Is that asking too much?

P.S. no disrespect for people who make musical condoms?
