Well, either way? I would present this as my mix, in a mix competition? I'm still not the best at it, by far? But I am no longer the worst :-) And I think this "does not suck..."

-) I'm finally starting to learn to mix!!! (makes inappropriate "i'm arriving" noise) I did work "hard" on the mix... And on the performances? :-) It's cool if you listen? The bass moves the song... The organ is there in the background shimmering? Where it's supposed to be. The background vocals come in, where they are supposed to? There's a lot going on here... The drums and percussion alone took several weeks :-) I am so glad when people listen and notice. Because, "it takes weeks..." On little things? That you don't think anyone will hear?

Robby, you are an amazing singer performer. Most often however, you suck as a recording engineer. This is not one of those times. While I would tweak it a bit on the bottom end, it is, overall, very good. Well done.

love the old 3 dog night stuff... this one was a great one to cover, excellent job! nice flow, good job on the harmonies, drum mix is a toss-up, because if you compare the original with your version, the drums are not 'phat' or in your face.... could go either way that part of the mix...

Excellent work as always. You certainly have the talent. I'm curious though what the motivation is for putting 6 weeks in on a cover tune? I don't mean to be facitious, but that's a lot of time on a cover tune, unless your putting it on CD for sale. No doubt a great exercise. Did I see in one your pictures a UA mic preamp? If so, how do like that and what all do you use it for? Daryl

Daryl; I use this rig to record my acoustic instruments, dobro, 6 string, 12 string Percussion. It's 'a mid-side technique, and depending on how I position the item being recorded, it will naturally sit center left, or center right. The small diaphram condenser at the bottom is a Mojave Audio MA-100, it has it's own tube (that little black box at the bottom w/the light), That is my mid channel, and it runs through the LA-610 at the top of the rack. Then the U87ai is turned sideways and configured in a figure 8 pattern. It runs through the Avalon 737VT in the rack. And when I record a track, I get two, a mid, and a side. I then clone the side and flip the phase, and pan one side hard left (100%) and the other hard right (100%) I highly recommend both this technique, and the equipment. I play the fretless through the 610 as well. As for the 6 weeks? :-) One week was class out of town? But my songs are like my children, I love them all, even and in some ways "especially!" The adopted ones.

Best production I've heard from you Robby, this is rich and clear to my ears, everything perfectly placed. That 'swooping' bass in the final choruses is superb. Wonderful harmonies, and the the whole vocal feels really comfortable and natural. Excellent.

:-) Thanks James! That fretless and I are old friends now. It took a long time though... It's like wrestling a gorilla? You don't quit when you're tired, you quit when the gorilla is tired. It fought hard for a long time (that bass), like a hotel hostess against Kobe Bryant? But like Kobe, I just said "you can kick and scream all you want, but one way or another, this is gonna happen." (Or I could have gone the Ben Roethlisberger route?) Either way, "this is gonna happen..." If anyone is trying to learn an instrument? Stick with it, don't give up. Time + dedication = success ;-) Of course throwing money at your passion doesn't hurt either? (Ax's? Mics, pre-amps, plugs, etc...) But much more importantly, "persistence..." Winston Churchill, "never give up, never give in, never."

Very nice choir and everything is well played and sunged (wrong word apparently hope you get it anyway) but I do miss the ground here its to plain if you get my meaning. Some EQ-work will do it.

Hi Robbie, I was never really a TDN fan but I always liked this tune. The mix sounds great on my cheap speakers and the vocal/harmonies are outstanding. And you're actually playing real drums on this? A bold, bold move in this day and age, my friend but you do an excellent job on all the instruments!

I may not have represented that clearly? I am playing the drums, but I did it with these two fingers (no not those two) I did play the percussion? :-) But when I say I played the drums, I mean I didn't use any loops or anything like that. It was the longest component of the initiative, taking about 2 weeks! I don't have the coordination to play the drums for real. That requires a special kind of physical gift.

Thanks man :-) And to all who listened and commented! I really appreciate it. I used to be anal about trying to respond to each and every person, and look for people to respond to me when I comment, but I realize that's just my OCD... I do sincerely appreciate everyone who took the time to listen and comment however. It's a passion for me, as I know it is for you as well, so we all understand when someone talks about their obsession with it :-) Speaking of which? Look for the next release from Mr. Markno999? It's gonna rock your socks off! Even if you're wearing loafers w/no socks? The loafers will be blown from your feet? And whatever hair you have will be standing "erect..." ;-) (he said standing...)

Or maybe if you're not actually wearing socks? You may go to the store and buy some? With the expressed purpose of having them knocked off... In fact, this is my recommendation.

Robbie I listened last night. Enjoyed it. I'm hesitant but FWIW.... I really like your vocals but this one for some reason made me feel like you had something else on your mind. If you were in the studio and I was on the board I'd be wondering if I should ask you, "why are you holding back when you can sing like that?" You mix some attitude with that skill and look out...IMO

Spaceman, thanks! Each one is like its own thing with me? It starts out like this, but it ends up like that? I consider myself the vessel. I would like to be filled with a well hopped beer on it's way to India :-) Ohhhh, listen up for this one that Markno999 and I are working on? It will rock every article of clothing you have on your body "off?" So I recommend listening in the buff... It saves the trouble, and the mess of cleaning up? Good to have a partner (willing) of the opposite sex handy too? Since you'll both be... In the buff? And excited by the performance? (it will be that good...) They'll be like, well, I do need to get to work early, and I have a bit of a headache? But what the heck!!?? Let's do it!! "Guaranteed..."
