And if you can "hear" the problems building up you've already pushed you system too far and are likely corrupting your project. That's why monitoring the system performance so you don't get to that point is preferable.... at least that's my understanding of it. I could be wrong and you have much smarter fellows than I here giving you suggestions so you may want to defer to their opinions.

Re: Downgrading from X2a to X1d 2013/10/08 14:16:35 (permalink)
I have to admit my system is not a "state of the art ", and surely need more memory.
CPU vice is good, never had any peaking on the cpu, also my graphic card is great.
The sound interface could be better ( Yamaha Ci1 )
next i will probably go for some focusrite interface.

Even if i had a " supercomputer ", there would be no insurance that it would run smoothly
if a software is bugged !

Someone saying in a former post that a laptop is better than my stationary is
is just not true and it is offensive.

A laptop is way........ slooooower than a Stationary PC.
slow HD / poor graphic card and mainly budget CPU.
even to be able to compare the laptop, it need higher spec's
to compare to a Stationary in many way's.

A laptop for music production would cost huge amount of $$$$
to even be able, as a production computer.

Would be way better off spending that $$$$ on a stationary computer
and you would get far more gear with it too for the same price.

I can agree that i need more memory
but it seems like there is a too big focus on the hardware
who has the most powerful computer, Geeeee !
C'mon guy's. . .

If it can run Sonar and do what i intend to do with it, then i am happy.
And as i said we all have things we learn all the time
and i thanks a lot for the tips and suggestions on what to do, and any help
We are not here to show off in any way, but to be helpful to each other
well some times there's a little war going on, but i think most of us
can manage that.

And for the final, yes i will get more memory, maybe someone get happy then

I downgraded to X1d and it works, and that was my intention.

Peace.

jan

It was probably a language barrier but what I recommended was to actually buy a cheap modern desktop for $300-400. Not a laptop like I have (I was only talking about something I want to do with my laptop).

Still though even a cheapo laptop could be better if you swapped out the harddrive which isn't such a big deal and even some of the cheaper model laptops have USB3 ports which you could hook up an external drive to for streaming libraries.

BUT... I do not recommend a laptop to solve your problems. An HP tower or similar with a more modern CPU, a little more RAM with some extra open slots and some USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports could be very workable in your situation and easily upgradable.

As far as Focusrite interfaces... yes, they are great. I own one that I bought to replace my old PCI based Echo interface and although you can't get ultra low latency like some devices such as MOTU or Roland interfaces (the lowest I can get is about 7ms roundtrip reliably which is more than acceptable to me).

They also keep up with their drivers and their customer service is impeccable. Very good choice there and extremely cost effective.

Okay... you've edited your post to imply we were all bragging. That is not the case. We were trying to help you solve your issues. You ragged on X2 in your OP but the problem in your case is not X2. Then you went on to say that you thought X3 would somehow be better.

You have hardware issues plain and simple. Your complaint about the software was silly. If you are happy with X1 by all means use it but if you are going to bash X2 at least bash it for legitimate reasons.

Best of luck to you. I think we are done here.

Sounds good, then ill settle with Focusrite as audio interface, also good to know
there's good service on the product's that is important.

thank's

You may also want to look at PreSonus interfaces too as from I've read they are of decent quality and comparable to the Focusrite stuff for the price range. However I still think Focusrite is better but I may be biased because I own one.

Basically PreSonus and Focusrite are similar as far as price and performance as far as I can tell. I have seen many users who are happy using both with Sonar. Cheers.

If he only has 2 gig of ram, he might as well install 32 bit anyway.

Yepp X2 was a case and it's too bugged, but that problem is now gone forever..

X3 i think will be better, due to the post's about it, and Cake is really working with it
they have probably learned of X2.

Last, yepp i think we are done here as well, no use to continiue this anymore.

To others, do not hesitate to downgrade to X1d
if X2 gives you a thorn in the flesh

Happy music making and mixing.

Not trying to be a smartass, but how can you honestly assess X2A on an admittedly inadequate setup?

There is no point in running 64bit SONAR in 2GB of RAM...

I'll go further than that and say that there is no point in running Windows 64-bit in 2GB RAM either.

Does that mean you think it is a good idea to run a preview release of an OS?

I had to abandon X2 and go back to X1 within a few days of getting X2. Never was stable - crashed all the time. X1 was fine. X3 seems to be fine. I have a powerhouse machine set up properly - definitely not the computer's fault.

Yepp X1d is quite good. I see you have a great computer , so i agree it's not always
hardware based, when thing's happen
Hoping that X3 will be as " stable " as Sonar 8.5 and  " X1"
I think that Cakewalk will do they'r best to get a great product this time.

I read this post... and am honestly not sure how to reply... I think scook's comment above is VERY valid even with X1d... especially as you make bigger projects, RAM will be the thing you "see/feel" most. Your hard disk will "function as RAM" but is ~300 times SLOWER.

I admit freely that my personal experience with X2 was not good (and I did fall back on  X1d during the chaos). HOWEVER... I have been thoroughly impressed with X3...

As far as "plugins," research what is in each release (I honestly CANNOT speak to these all, and freely admit it)... as far as your computer... if you enjoy home recording, there are fairly inexpensive options to upgrade your PC (and I feel you need to do this FIRST). As I review X3 based on "what is included" (at least for producer), I see a LOT of things included in X3 producer that I paid money for (in pervious versions).... meaning "comparable plug-ins."

For what it is worth... upgrading the computer will surprise you... and interface (I feel) is #2... from there, I think you will find your "horizons" opened, and you can understand "what is possible." I DO realize that budget is very much a deciding factor to all of this!!

As I finish typing this, I worry I may not have made "sense" to you... but I *did* focus on the "2G RAM" myself, and realize that will limit you in many ways.

Quick "diversion" for you all... I know some great musicians... and NONE of them use any DAW at all... I finally convince one to buy SONAR, and her computer cannot support (laptop) :(

For me, this was a realization in the difference from system to system performance!

Now... my "system" was tailored and built by me 2+ years ago now and still benchmarked @ #10 recently... in fact, this can be built for ~$700 now...

I do a lot of business... and "profit margin" often comes from "time to market"... HOWEVER.... as the end user, you are NOT concerned for profit, but what you can do.

Just a thought really...

Thanks for your post, yes i do understand and will get more Memory.
At the present time i hardly do more than 6 - track's, and that don't require that mutch power.
So as an happy amateur, learning mixing music with X1d with the spec's i have work's for me.

Concerning plugins i working hard to find a few plugins, one or two EQ's,  and one compressor ( 1176 type )
that suits me and of course it has to be 64 bit plugs, then i do not have to worry about extra CPU
load from bitbridge.

I do understand a bigger amount of Ram will benefit a lot, when running sample library's etc
and like 20+ audio tracks  , and loads of plugins.

Same situation here.  I've been using X1 until a few days ago when I decided to give X3b a try.  It seems stable, a tiny bit more sluggish than X1, and I still don't like Take Lanes, even if they work as intended.  But the new EQ, Melodyne, track colors, etc., make it worth a try.  Also, so far so good.
