Rik, I kept the midi track of that staccato cello too. :-)  I figured I could always have two versions.  :-)  Thanks for the tips.  I don't mind you being picky at all. :-)

Well, thank you, Steve.  I'm tickled that you like it. :-) I LOVE EW's percussion.  One midi note gets you the coolest timp or cymbal roll.  No messing around with tiny midi notes, etc.

Thanks Radio.  Glad you like it.  I'd probably be tickled to have a piece of mine in a movie even if they didn't pay me.  lol (don't tell them that though!)  :-)

Thank you, equality.  Billion dollar movie?  Well, now THEY'D have to pay me!  lol  I'm still wondering if I took that hook from somewhere, but I can't remember where either.  I'll keep watching over my shoulder just in case...

Wow, and to think you have that secret weapon, your piano, in your arsenal.   This is a beautiful composition.  I've been off for awhile and have missed a lot of great tunes.  I really like this one!  You do knockout work, my friend!

Wow, truly awesome.  You're getting pretty good at this stuff.  Nice tones and instrument choices.  The fade-out at the end felt kind of short.  Would like to of been let down from the ride just a bit easier with a longer fade.

Thanks Warren.  Glad you liked it. :-)

Thanks Mark.  Yeah, I wondered about that ending.  I'll revisit that.

This is now getting a major overhaul by a pro magician/musician.  If he has time to finish it, this will pale in comparison to his mix.  :-)  And hopefully I'll learn a few things along the way.

Missed this one up til now for some reason - kept waiting for the piano - not that it needs it, just unusual to hear a non piano Janet tune. Can't say much about mix as only on lappy speakers, but it seems to translate well. Your musicianship certainly shows through in the composition.

Thanks Tom. Glad you liked it. :-)

Thanks Paulo.  Gotta get out of the box now and then. :-)  (and I couldn't figure out how to make this work with a piano.)  :-)

Thanks Dena.  Do you mean the bass should be raised in volume?

Way to go Janet!  This is really impressive.  It's pretty darn good.

1st of all it's a really nice piece and the tempo and instrumentation really pull off the emotion of the piece.

That cello is still a problem to my ears... Maybe keep experimenting w/ samples?  Maybe play with the length of the short notes... IE select a bunch of them in the piano roll view and lengthen AND shorten them with the draw tool and see if it makes a difference in the sound.  I'd try giving the cello it's own reverb too... see if that smoothes it out.

The other thing is that the whole mix sounds a bit lo-fi?  RLD says he make a 192kbps mp3 and uses that for his upload version to soundclick... he says that soundclick makes the best hi-fi version that way... never tried it myself.  I just upload 128kbps.  But it's a suggesion.

Here's something else to try w/ the cello:
http://www.camelaudio.com/camelcrusher.php
Use a little bit of mechanical distortion and compression.  It gives any instrument a bit of punch.  If you don't use too much, your instrument will still sound like a real orchestral instrument, just different.  It's a great little tool.

This sounds just SUPER.  It's a great piece and you just keep getting better.

Peace,

Ian

First love the new avatar.  I'm a huge Calvin and Hobbes fans (have all their books for reading, AND the collectors edition as well, lol).

As for the song, really digging it.   You did a really nice job of making it sound like it was played by real people which is not something that is easy (and something I still can't do).   Very nicely done !

Trying to write music which has no lyrics is I believe the most difficult fight. Trying to keep the attention of the listener for 3 1/2 minutes can be a real struggle.

Agree 100%.    Some days I think I would give an arm (well maybe a toe) to be able to sing a damm.

Thanks for stopping by, Ian!  Glad you liked it.  Yeah, that cello has already been changed.  I'm still doing a major overhaul on it.  I suppose I should put up each stage so you don't have to listen to the stuff I've already changed.  Lo-fi?  I thought I was making a 192kbps mp3, but I'll check to see if a setting got changed.

Thank you, Tony!

Thanks, Larry.  You could get the samples too. Wait till they go on sale, though. :-)

Thanks, Mathew.  Yeah, I have all the books too.  I was so sad when he quit writing.  It really sounds like it was played by real people?  Wow--that's big. Thanks!  :-)  And yeah, I wish I could sing better too.  It's way too hard coming up with names for instrumentals.  lol

Thanks Bapu Ed.  :-)

I love the tune and the arrangement. I was listening on laptop speakers so can't comment on the mix although it did sound a little bit lower-fi than I was expecting.

Cheers,
Terry.

Janet this is just lovely, and it's so good to see you branching out with the instrumentation and embracing new challenges.  Sounds to me like it's all coming to fruition with this beautifully orchestrated piece.

Janet this might be my favorite piece of yours. The composition show some terrific complexity, some good counterpoint going on. Very impressive. My only complaint would be about EQ. The cello has plenty of bottom but seems lacking in mids and highs. Actually the entire piece is lacking some warmth, fullness, that I simply am not smart enough to suggest how to correct. Understand, I mean only the EQ, the music is beautiful and I took the liberty of downloading it. I love it.

Thanks for stopping by, Terry.  Someone else mentioned lo-fi too.  I'll have to look into that.  Although I hardly know what I'm looking for.  lol

Thank you, Phil!  After spending that much on EWQL, I figured I'd better use it!  lol.  Glad you liked it.  I appreciate it.

Really glad you like it, Mark. :-)

You too, Mark (C.) :-)  I'll have to look into that eq bit.  I really want to get back to this and fix a lot of things but it may be awhile...

And last, but not least, Mark #999.  Thanks so much!  At this point, I think it would be so cool to have a song in a movie I'd almost let them use it for free.  :-)

OK. This is Southern Montana. I love Montana.
The strings are superb. They paint a lovely impression of big sky country.
The timpani and brass fill it out nicely, and add to the expansive grandeur of the scene. The crash cymbal seems to be the weak link.
My initial thought is to eliminate it entirely, but it might work if you dip it in some massive reverb.
This is quite cinematic.  You have captured the vastness of the West, and this begs for the wide screen.

Hey Janet - I have not read all of the comments, so sorry if I repeat.

this is really nice!   the melody seems familiar, but I can't place it right now.

the crash cymbals are flat and lifeless, they have no ring or resonance and maybe too loud as well.

everything else is really good, IMO.  the rest of the drums, even! ;-)  nice work!

This is beautiful Janet! Well done! I really like the arrangement and the melodies. It has a great mood, a little melancholic but brave. Would fit an Oscar winning movie any day!

Just one thing, have you tried playing around with key switches and using different articulations for the different instrument sections? It could "naturalize" things a little, especially when the piece gets a little busier and the attack normally would get shorter in the different sections of the orchestra. Having the same attack through out kind of make it sound a little.... er, sampled?

-having said that, the piece is wonderful and I salute you for a great composition!

Wow Janet. This is real purty. Great arrangement and production and NO piano. wholly mackerel Andy. that must have taken a lot of fortitude to stay away from the ivories. The orchestra must have been expensive though. And, where did they all sit?

Great piece Janet!
It reminds me of "Colors of the Wind" which I believe was featured on a Disney movie.
Like others have mentioned, maybe a B section and you might have a real hit!
